FOR ALL INSTRUMENTS - Horace Scope . . . How hip is this album? And how timeless is the song Strollin'? This week Jeff digs into this perfect little gem of a song, and a performance that really couldn’t be any better. A great arrangement, a well-rehearsed band and some masterful soloing. Today is a good day!

One of my professors played and toured with Horace Silver in his later years, and apparently he would write out parts for each individual instrument, including bass and drums. Horace is just the master of small group composing/arranging to me, another thing my professor told me was that he made a point to try and compose something every morning; sometimes he’d get 4 bars, sometimes a whole tune, sometimes nothing. I think the work paid off, he wrote some of the best combo music of all time, second only to maybe Monk imo.

For sure, Horace was a wonderful players but he WORKED on composition as much as he worked on his playing. Both as muscles, and both get better and stronger the more you work them! I'm so happy that you are enjoying these videos. Please subscribe if you haven't yet. There is MUCH more good stuff coming. And hey, if you haven't already, please jump in to a Free 30 Day Limited access to JazzWire. I would love to work together with you in a more meaningful (and not too expensive) way. With the Free 30 Day Trial, you’ll see what we're doing behind the wall! You'll be inside in about 20 seconds, no credit card required. www.jazzwire.net/free-trial/. These videos are great, but they are a SHADOW compared to the real work and we can do together!

I wonder if the bass hits from Horace were a sonic “stomping” of the feet of the person who is strolling going along? Probably reading too much into it, but thought it was an interesting effect. And, boy, it’s hard not to hear the rehearsal in place by the band. Sounds great!!

Thanks for listening John Mark. There was definitely some stomping going on!! Lots of rehearsal as well.

Jeff: I wonder if those low left hand hits by Horace were influenced by Errol Garner's playing at that time. Or maybe it was the other way round?

You know, I'm not sure. I did a gig with a real Horace scholar last night, we PLAYED Strollin', but I didn't ask him about it. I will next week on the next gig. (the great DC pianist Wade Beach).

Have you ever considered scholarships for adults?

We absolutely have. The challenge is that it is just harder to get donors to sponsor adult scholarships. They see the direct line of their funds helping a young person get started, and that understandably captures their imagination. That said, we have discounts for military and for multiple family members (parents, kids, spouses, etc). Where do you live and what instrument do you play? I'd love to try to figure something out. We occasionally get corporate funding that can help. Visit the web site at www.JazzWireSummit.com and send us an email.

Gotcha... totally understandable. I live in Germantown, Md. and I play piano and bass. I signed up for the 30-day trial at JazzWire.
