Maradona was more elegant, he was an artist. Messi is pure vertigo and effectivity.

This was like a magical surreal moment, with Maradona in Napoli. i swear only World cups create unbelieve moments like this

"Goycochea will be an argentine hero for as long as he lives". Well, every goalkeeper who stops a penalty playing for Argentina is always compared with Goycochea. Always. In the last World Cup, the broadcaster was screaming his lungs out "Dibu Goyco Dibu Goyco Dibu Goyco!!" at every save by Dibu Martinez at the penalty shootout against Netherlands and France. And something similar happened against Netherlands in Brazil 2014 with Chiquito Romero. Goyco will always be a national hero.

It's weird how things worked out for Argentina during that WC. The 1st keeper broke his hand and Goycochea took over. What a keeper. Sadly enough, Argentina conceded on a penalty. Worst Finals ever...Maradona in tears. I am not Argentina but I was biased with Maradona.

Pumpido’s blunder against Cameroon in the opening game made Argentina fans more furious.

I watched this game when I was 10 years old. Now I am 43. Since then I became an Argentinian fan. I am so grateful that Argentina finally got the world champion last year. When Argentina got the champ in 1986 I was only 6 years old. Didn't know anything yet.

I think that's because of the foreign players like Maradona, Careca, van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard, Klinsman, Matthaus, etc who make Serie A the best league at that time.

Incredible moment for Diego Maradona. Back in April of the same yr, he led Napoli to their second Scudetto. But knocking out Italy in World Cup 1990, in Napoli’s home stadium, was the last straw for Maradona and he was soon had to leave Napoli the season after this.

My father was there in 1990, nearly all Neapolitans in the stadium supported Argentina, and only right they did.

Messi always taking the first penalty for Argentina isn't talked abt enough. Messi's character is what sets him apart from the other greats.

Ah yes, I remember it well. Distressing, but the 3 Tenors Concert went on without Italy in the final.

You can see between 90-94 how much Biaggio grew in presence and charisma. He’s like a kid here compared with footballing colossus he was by USA94. What a player he was

Baggio scored not only this penalty. But also the penalty in 1998 against France in the Quarter final. Unfortunately Italy lost that shootout as well. All of this, of course, makes his 1994 penalty miss even more unfortunate.

Fun thing: Argentina was scheduled to stay in Naples until the quarterfinals (as Cameroon, who won their group, did) and go to the North for the semifinals (as England, who beat Cameroon, did). But Argentina did not win their group, went to the North to play Brazil (what a match that was) and Yugoslavia in their swan song, and came back to Naples for the semifinal...against Italy. When Italy played in home soil but was not the home team.

I remember watching this as a 12 yr old kid with my father on our black & white tv set.

This was the only game that Argentina played well in that World Cup. The yellow card to Cannigia costed Argentina in the final.

Goycoechea was an experienced PK goalie. In the 1986 Champions League final he defended 2 PKs in a row for Barcelona.

This World Cup a lot of Germans and Argentines played for Italian clubs.

Italy in the 90s are so unlucky because they lost all 3 penalty shoot outs at the WC. Imagine if they had the luck to win all 3. They would have won the WC 1994, reached their home final vs. Germany and had a solid chance to even reach a third final in semis vs. Croatia.

But the 90s was the era when Germany could knock Italy from world cup and possibly euros, it may include the final of 1990 world cup, the semifinal of 1994 world cup etc.

Goycochea was not in original squad. Or he was probably in reserves. Pumpido was the first choice. He got injured. Goyco took his place. Rest was history

Baresi and Biggio both scored penalties in this match, sadly they both would miss after 4 years in the final. Very small margins

How was that first one "hard, low and unstoppable" or "the perfect spot kick" he hit it hard but that was it, it was barely towards the corner, looked closer to the middle. Keeper goes the right way he's always stopping that.

When Italy lost the penalty shootout to Argentina in the semi final (Maradona in Naples?) I was in Rome and the whole city went silent except for the sound of ambulance sirens.. I will never forget that feeling..

The whistle of the home crowd when Argentine players were taking their spot kicks. Felt like as if the earth's gonna burst. 😅😅

Porque Goycochea ganó la serie de penales contra Yugoslavia e Italia en 1990. Luego contra Colombia y Brasil en la Copa América 1993 y de yapa nos da contra Dinamarca la equivalente a la Finalissima de 1993. Mientras que el ''Dibu'' es notable contra Colombia en la Copa América 2021 y ni hablar con Países Bajos y Francia en 2022. Ahora, como arquero prefiero al ''Dibu'' Martínez sin dudas....es completo. Corta centros, achica bien, habla desde el fondo y realiza atajadas únicas.

Oh the joy and happenstance of penalties : Maradona missed against Yugoslavia yet still went through, a couple(or more, including Maradona) of less-than-perfect Argentine penalties that went in .... from 2022 that's the way it can go . Score more goals in open-play and the penalties won't be needed.
