Refs were more on Argentina side in 2022 in comparison to the 1990. I guess, it would have been the same had Argentina lost the 1986 final and Maradona wasn't a world champion already by 1990.

I remember him when I saw this world cup. He was a great keeper. He was a perfect gentlemen. He helped reach Argentina to the final.

I decided to be a goalkeeper watching mr goycochea. Still gives me goosebumps watching those games. Maradona and cannigia were great but to me this man kept Argentina alive in 90 wc. I still imagine if he had saved that penalty at final. My hero.

An argentine fan back then because of Maradona, Goycochea came as a complete revelation and a pleasant surprise. One of the greatest goal keeping performances across all world cups played...ever.

I love Goychito ^_^ Came as an unkonwn, but during a couple of matches he achived immortality. Legend.

Sergio Goychchea, one of the best goalkeepers in world. No doubt about it. Sometimes, you have excellent talents glued to the bench because of famous names. I was so sad when Argentina lost back home in Mali 🇲🇱

Germany: Been in 8 finals. Brazil: 7 finals. Argentina and Italy: 6 finals. France: 4 finals. No doubt which countries are the greatest football nations.

It’s cool to see that Sergio Cochea has kept in shape after his playing days. Many athletes just BALLOON once they retire from competition.

Once Goycochea stepped on the field, he gave the Argentina the energy they were missing. He was the Maradona of 1986 for Argentina in 1990. What a classy and humble character.

Best Goalkeeper ever !

Sergio Goycochea was the absolute surprise, Maradona was the leader and Julio Grondona was the great unsung hero.

Maradona is indeed the God of football, he wasn't scoring 100 goals par game, but he owns the game. That what has changed in 2017, when the highest goal scorer in the champions league n league will definitely become the ballon d'or. We AR judged today by the number of goals we score, not by the amount of importance we add to the team.

History just had to rhyme Messi lost against Germany 1-0, in the Finals ( that too on Blue Jersey ) And in 2022, just like Maradona 1986, won 1 World Cup with his G+A being 10. And in Striped Jersey

Italia 1990 is widely remembered as the most badly played world cup. Few goals, much incidents and excessive defensive playing in general.

That's true, But don't forget that Germany was an exception in that point. Think about their brilliant 4-1 victory against Yugoslavia or the match against the Netherlands, which was the best in the whole tournament.

That's true, Germany did not play that easy later in tournament as they did in the group stage or against Netherlands. But still they deserved to win the world cup, because no other team that played directly against them was better than them. The only match that was really close was the semi final against England, so if Germany would have lost that, nobody could complain about that. But Argentina were by far not playing on the same level as Germany.

Very true they where better offensively than any other team in the first round..and Italy where the best defensive team in that World Cup but I still think Germany got lucky that Argentina beat Italy on.penalties..to play Italy in Rome in that type of magnitide especially a Final..it would be very hard for Germany to beat Italy infront of the huge home crowd with all the support..remember italy never lossed in Rome during the tournament and never allowed a goal..it was only when the semi final shifted to Naples is when Italy lossed on penalties..Rome was a completely different atmosphere for the italians..we very strong in Rome..compared to playing the only one game away in Naples

Caniggia was an amazing player. I remember his cool lob over a keeper when playing for Roma.

Maradona would have gone down in history as the greatest footballer ever if he had the same professionalism as Messi/Ronaldo. The most amazing fact about the two latter and perhaps best footballers ever is their determination and long time commitment to a game where many seem to rest on their laurels for too long. Maradona at his peak had it all and he played in a time where horrible tackles from behind weren´t punished as they are today, unfortunately he lacked the stamina and will to see his talent prevail throughout the ages.

Goycocheia (however you spell his name) was just as good as Maradona in this world cup!

Italia '90 was Maradona's worst World Cup. He really did not play well. He played well in Espana '82 but was violently fouled all the time. USA '94 should have been a great WC for him too.

alex kanyima Maradona was a bit less dominant in Mexico? Uh... yeah. Alright. Go and do some research before you respond. He wasn't dominant at all in Italia '90- aside from his assist to Caniggia and a few other things he did in that tournament, he was really very ineffective at that WC.

I beg to differ...penalties not just lottery...it involves quality, competence, emotional strenghth, training (yes, some coaches refuse to train penalties at all). The only ones I hear complaining about penalties labeling it as lottery are the ones at the losing end of the deal....

Each Argentinian game was fixed. Sadly Argentina was allowed to leave the group stage. All other teams had no chance until the fraud was finally detected before the final. How many shots on goal by Argentina again???? They actually had to score without using handballs, fouls and cheats.

I had a VHS video of the World Cup 1990 that I watched as a kid, I never knew about the injury to the 1st string Argentinian GK, pretty gnarly leg break

Goycochea had a lot of practice saving penalties in high-stakes games. In the 1986 "Champions League" final, as Barcelona's goalie he defended 3 consecutive penalties . However, the GK of Steaua (Duckadam) defended 4 consecutive ones, at which point Steaua won the shootout (2-0)

If it weren't for Goycochea, Argentina would've never reached the final. He made some very clinical saves against Brazil and Italy, especially when it comes to Penalties.

The only bright memory that all soccer fans like myself, will forever have of the horrific and totally infamous 1990 World Cup Finals, celebrated that year in Italy, was it's theme song, Un Estate Italiana. And Goycochea made a lot of important saves and was in the all star team with Caniggia and Maradona. No penalty should have been given to either Augenthaler, or even Breheme for that matter.

These kind of moments and players don't exist anymore look at the passion the determination of this goal keeper these days it's all about the money only a few passionate players left in this game
