We've been using JIF for years and this was our first time ever running into a salmonella outbreak. It was an over $6000 loss of product, and substantially more if you include all of the wasted labor hours! But now we're using Skippy for now and we're slowly restocking our peanut butter products in store and on the website.

💑 About Hercules Candy
Hercules Candy has been on Steve’s side of the family since 1910(ish). When he took over in the 70’s, he anticipated after 10 years of hard work, he could move the business out of the basement and into a real storefront. Unfortunately, it took until 2018 for that to happen, but hey at least it happened! Steve and Terry own the shop, Craig (the social media manager) is their son, Cara (wrapper and shipper extraordinaire who is poised to take over the shop one day) is their daughter and Leah (who doesn’t love being on camera and is very elusive) is their oldest daughter. Karen has been working for Hercules Candy since the twins (Craig and Cara) were about 6 months old and everybody else is a new recruit. Don’t forget to subscribe and hit the 🔔 for more videos!

It's not only the loss of the product is the loss of the working hours too. Since staff was paid and heat/lights kept on etc. The costs are insane.. I would definitely be seeking damages from the company or at least a huge supply free of cost as an apology

Oh man, it's so heartbreaking when this happens! Feel Terry's pain so personally! Last year and earlier this year, we had a recall on all brown sugar, golden syrup and molasses. @@HerculesCandy It was quite crazy! From November last year up until around April or so! Sadly it was contaminated with lead, so that was a bit of risk! Made Christmas quite the struggle with fruit puddings, cakes and gingerbread cookies! (From New Zealand!) Really hope Hercules doesn't have to go through this loss ever again! Don't even want to imagine how heartbreaking it must be to see all the loss of stock :( Not just the price of ingredients, but all the hard work and hours put into producing :(

They made mention of the fact that it was easier for them to make claim with insurance due to the fact that they had product with the exact batch # that was recalled. They have to have insurance in order to be in business and this is exactly what it's for. I used to work in insurance so that's how I know, Each insurance company is different so it also depends on what their policy says, Hope this helps. :-)

JIF should be compensating you for all your lost product not insurance, because wouldn’t that make your rates go higher? That’s what I’ve always heard. You have a claim regardless of who’s fault your rates increase.

Was not sure if you used Jif or not, but knowing you used PB I am glad I shared the recall article with you. I suggest you keep compile a listing of the cost of all of the items, make sure you include the cost of postage (opening packed boxes), labor costs, printing new labels then I would send that bill to Smuckers (makers of Jiff). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jif_(peanut_butter)

You dont know what molasses is!! I'm a Canadian Maritimer and we love our molasses. My kids grew up with their grandfather pouring a little bit of fancy molasses in their hands as a treat. Its very sweet (not black strap or cooking molasses). Some people used to use molasses on bread, cookies, oatmeal molasses bread(brown bread), etc. Its a staple in the cupboard

Crap. What a pain in the butt. Terry did a great job controlling her internal rage talking about the peanut butter recall. Nice she can put it all in perspective, lol. It's hard to see all the "made with love" candy being thrown away. Actually, no, that would be awesome to watch. Get creative with the destruction!!

How exactly is it destroyed? I mean that is quite a bunch of little items if you have to break each one open.

Do you have insurance to cover things like recalls? My Bakery insurance covered things like that or if product was harmed because of equipment failures.. had a pin shear in a mixer filled with a 55pound batch of buns that had to be tossed because there was metal shavings that fell into the dough.
