I am painting a fan art painting of Queen Amidala from The Phantom Menace. I'm using the method of drawing on the canvas directly and then spraying the canvas with a sealant and then paint over the drawing. This is something I learned from Cesar Santos.

You’ve got me in tears dear man. You are a gift. Your gift is a gift. I appreciate that you recognize the “old masters” (whatever that truly means), but more moved by what you personally have within you to offer the world and in the way you view and experience it. Capturing that is really all that matters. Absolutely stunning!

You had me in tears. I used to live in NZ when I was in my early teens and, sadly, have never been back. I became a painter when I was older and must say I really felt every brush mark you laid down. I would consider you a ‘New’ Master. Your journey. Love your painting and have subscribed.

Such wonderful insights!! And I so needed to hear them! What else I learned from watching you and listening was that you kept going, sometimes back to something I'm sure you thought you were done with, and tweaked it, made it better, changed it completely. And the little grass details, the water sparkles, the cow's hair....it really doesn't matter how long it takes, right? It's the process, getting lost in it! THANK YOU!

Gosh! Your words are as beautiful as the painting! Your "ah ha" moment to paint "like you" was amazing! I am a very brand new artist (although I am not a brand new human 😂, not even close). I just completed my very first oil painting, and ugh the struggle with wet sand at night has me a bit frustrated. I just love your attention to detail. It is inspiring, educational, and encourages me as an artist to appreciate all the nuances in the things we see!

You are an AMAZING artist and teacher! Thank you for your thoughts on this topic. These new groups and classes on the internet are all about "THEIR" way, products which I understand they should push those. But they are not teaching what painting is all about like you just stated. When I first started painting I could get lost for hours in whatever I was painting. Still do! However I always want to learn New techniques, and LOVE watching you paint. I learn from watching you paint. Your style and techniques mesmerize me !! Thank you so much for doing what you do!!

This was a special video for me. I get down on myself for being a slow, meticulous painter. Try as I might, I can’t paint loose. I do give up when I feel I have overworked it. I also grew up with Herefords and spent many lazy summer days under the trees with them. They are gentle and beautiful, and worthy of painting. I loved watching these come to life.

I loved this post. As great as it is being you, it took trying to be someone else to recognize and appreciate who you are. Since we are born, imitation has been a part of the process of learning who we want to be. I still try to copy some of my favorite paintings just so that I can learn what I like about them and if creating them is as much fun as looking at them. I crash and burn on some and have a happy ending on others but I wouldn’t take back the time I spent on any of them because there were as much to learn from the failures as there was from successes. Keep inspiring artists with these great posts.

Hi Andrew. I am en Plein air artist for many years. I always enjoy watching your videos. I learned this same lesson many years ago. I just relay the lesson to my students in a different way. I tell them if you always try to paint a masterpiece, you will never paint one. I also tell them that I am a plein air artist, because of two reasons. One is I love to be in the great outdoors. The other reason is I love to paint. If I get a great painting it is a bonus! If you think this way you will always keep growing as an artist, and maybe paint your masterpiece.
