I use these videos as an antidote to the British Wildlife Documentaries hosted by Sir David Attenborough . It is here that we learn of the real dangers all around us. Squirrel gangs lurking in the trees, ready to trade a diet of nuts for human flesh. Birds that watch from the tops of Palm trees…biding their time for an opportunity to swoop down with their pointy little beaks to pluck out your eyeballs. Carnivorous cats, slinking along the hedges, all teeth and claws prepared to attack the instant you turn your back to them. Poisonous, black spiders with dripping fangs, webs ready for the next man to choose the wrong opening to relieve himself. The Florida urban jungles might look harmless enough, but danger lurks around every Palm tree, behind every bush and even in the manicured grounds under your feet. Lucky for us, we have Bill from Curious Cars to point the dangers out before we’re on the menu.

Army buddy and I circumnavigated Luxemburg in a Euro-spec Porsche 924 Turbo in exactly 24 hours. We left Dusseldorf, Germany at 240 kph with me white-knuckled in the passenger seat. We had a Michelin travel guide, stopped off in Verdun, France and Bastogne, Belgium along the way. Caught a little corner of the Netherlands near Maastricht and got back to his apartment for a well-earned rest. He also had a Euro-spec Porsche 944, plus a very patient wife.

@@princesssolace4337 I was very impressed with the Michelin Road Guide in those days of paper maps and a compass in your car. I remember joking that if we turned on the Porsche's headlights, you could see the glow on the map. John bought a bust of Marshall de Saxe at an antique shop in Verdun. We drove around the battlefield of Verdun for a bit, mostly cemeteries as I faintly recall now. We slipped into Belgium at an abandoned border crossing, even though this predated the EU, back when collecting stamps in your passport was a big deal. Spent a little time in Bastogne, seeing a memorial tank or two from the Battle of the Bulge. We flashed through that narrow neck of the Netherlands between Belgium and West Germany on our way home to Duesseldorf.

You were in top form on this video, Bill. Great work as always and highly entertaining, though I was ever so slightly disappointed that you didn't show us how miserable the Canadians would be in the back seat. I will find the other 944 reviews as I am sure you touched on it in one of those. I am not a big Porsche fan and never thought much of these until I saw one in the early 90s. A guy I was in the Navy with had a black 944 turbo with tinted windows that had some suspension and exhaust work done, lowering it just a little bit. It looked absolutely awesome and sounded great.

Thanks for this one, Bill.. I was never a huge fan of these, I always thought the 928 was much more interesting, but those were SO goddamn rare that just seeing one was really an event. Ever do a 928? Hope to see one of those if you get a chance, but this car, the 944 is certainly evocative of that early to mid '80s era.. Take care.

@@liberals_destroy_everythin2497 I'm not surprised, I've heard similar stories of 944 owners from 30 odd years ago (especially the ones who worked in advertising). I always thought it was because they didn't have enough money to get a 911 or even a 928, but just had enough money to get the introductory Porsche badge and be a wanker about it with a superiority complex when comparing themselves to anyone who didn't drive an exotically badged car.

This and the 968 are on my bucket list of Porsches that I could actually buy, drive and then fix (hence no 928) without going broke. Had a realtor friend who'd bought one just to take out Sundays - I was hooked. Not so expensive I'd never use it, and there's garage support in my area. BGen X here, and while back in the day I used to dream of an old 911 - but they got older, so did I and only one of us appreciated in value.

Great review Bill. I Will always remember Jake’s 944 in 16 candles. We had a 77’ 924 when I was small that I suffered in the back seat for many an hour. Later dad had 2 944’s. A neglected 86’ Turbo which he spend a lot of money to get “sorted” and will always be referred to in my family as “the evil red car”. As I was driving it from Wilmington to Charlotte to sell it for him the turbo failed. This led to an expensive and convoluted repair just to get rid of the damn thing. Followed up by an 85.5’ n/a 944 that was a gorgeous car and may or may not have had an errant golf club swing inadvertently shattering the distorted leaking rear window. One of the greatest long distance touring cars I have ever driven. I am happy to have driven but never owned one.

I’m an ex Porsche technician & can say in all honesty that the 911 couldn’t compete with the 944 turbo which was really fast, had fabulous handling & brakes, was built really well at an Audi factory and didn’t rust, unlike the 911 which was on a mission to kill you, had major oil leak issues, rusted away (not here in Greece admittedly), & the build quality was average at best Bill, the cars development code was EA425 not EX425, that keyhole is the factory alarm system, rare option in Europe. The European version had 163 horsepower

My mechanic told me once that for the upkeep I could have owned a 911 which was a much more expensive car to buy. I think the 951s handling is why I'm still alive as a 911 might have spit me off the road during one of those overly enthusiastic flogs.

I always joke that the 944 was Porsches first truck. I had a ‘87 944s that I could get track tires, tools, and clothes in the back for track day weekends. Yeah the maintenance was expensive but loved it for the 10 years I owned it. The downside for owning one now would be trying to find parts for it as with all older cars the supply starts drying up and the price for parts goes up.

I’ve wanted one of these for about ten years or so. I used to see one parked on the street in a neighborhood near where I lived and I always stopped and looked at it; Porsche guys love (or used to love) to crap on the 944, but it’s really just a very pretty car. Until I can find my unmolested Guards Red 944 S2 coupe, I’ll have to content myself with my new to me CLK 550 coupe, a car that I’m very rapidly also falling in love with.

Very nice car ... Great matching color which suits the body styling.... Very nice piece.... The edge of the hood near the windshield should have come upwards a little for dynamics, for styling and the wipers would have been hidden.... Just a little curve upwards ... The hood looks little too flat .... The back is not boring at all.... A lot of cars back then should put that curve on the hoods for styling with those long hoods and pop lights.... Its very minor detail which would changed the car for the a much cooler look.

In my opinion, the 87 944 was the best looking Porsche ever. The sleek flared fenders and sleek and muscular body shape made for a beautiful car. Always thought the 911 looked like a bug or frog due to the headlights.

The 944's fender flairs was the reason, as a kid I wanted one. 21 years old, my '83 Berlinetta Camaro had seen much better days by then. But the 944 was way out of my price range. Enter the car that I still own today; was excited to see it in person after my dad found it on Autotrader magazine. For $2995 in 1999. A 1986 Chrysler Conquest TSI aka Mitsubishi Starion ESIR. Oh those staggered wheels and fender flairs looked cool to me! I thought as a 21 year old, broke college student, I was riding around in a real sports car. Intercooled turbocharged "G54b" 2.6L 4 cyl, which is where the "balance shafts" come in to play. Basically a turbocharged fork lift motor.

I hope that Bill will find a 1989 Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R SHP. We looked at one of the last for sale in the US. It had a Momo wooden steering wheel and shift knob. We ended up with the 944. And honestly, a girl I knew had a Conquest, the 944 beat it in the look department but the Starquest seemed faster and more extreme.

I think it was way too expensive to produce. Even a new front engine platform doesnt make as much sense as one that can parts share with the 911 like the boxster was able to.
