It Sounds Faster, But Is It? Custom Exhaust & Headers - The 850 Project S2E04

►After all of the work we've done to our 850 Project, its exhaust left a lot to be desired. A 5-cylinder Volvo has a unique soundtrack even with the stock exhaust, but when upgraded, that always recognizable exhaust note wakes up and sounds more like a 90's track weapon than that of your grandmother's family hauler. And while the noise is what's most apparent about our new exhaust, the intention was to create a freer flowing design that supported our new engine modifications. In this episode of The 850 Project, Josh Briggs, Owner of 8eightFab, joins us in the shop to help fabricate our custom 5-to-1 exhaust system for the Volvo 850. In less than five days, our crusty exhaust system is removed, and a brand-new high-rise header is designed, fabricated, and installed. Besides that, one more piece of the puzzle is worked out, and that's removing our modified factory ECU and replacing it with a Megasquirt unit. After all of this is done, we take it to the dyno once again to see where what kind of power our quickly evolving 850 makes.

I have owned an 850 t5r and man that thing beat everything on the road back then. I got headers, upgrade turbo, intercooler, good tune. Near 400hp. And I could daily it. I regret selling it.

Ive got a spot in mexico that i check my speedometer between a couple of road signs from a standing start,to get an idea if a mod worked. Then ill bust out some other equipment to verify. Its surprising how much noise can fool people into thinking its faster now that its loud.

it's the same concept. I'm surprised that 5 cylinders can sound so close to a v12 with a similar exhaust setup. I'm addicted to these setups now

i just recently got an optrel hood for welding at work, and its like welding in 4k compared to the miller hoods ive been using. my last miller hood was a t94 and this optrel kicks its ass.

Ahaha I think I've done about an order every 10-15 days or so for the last 12-14mo on my current project, they're awesome and the lifetime warranty is super awesome! Definitely gonna check out some of their shows they sponsor as I'm only a 2.5hr drive from them and like 45mins from Lime Rock.

Which project ! I would love to do the same! The concept is terrible with a track session to see the evolution of the modifications! And in addition to talking about ITBs, can't wait for the next video, quickly, I can't hold on anymore! ps: maybe there is still a relief session planned, there are still some left! (soundproofing...)

What is the heat shrink tool with deflector tip at @18:56? Looks like the perfect size.
Build the engine with high compression lightweight pistons, ~13:1 lightweight flywheel etc. Then put in on E85! After that the engine will make all the power, easily over 200 maybe even creeping up on the 250 mark.

@@fcpeuro If you wanna squeeze some power out of it, Scimec Motor in Norway should be able to supply cams, pistons and such. The dude is amazing at tuning Volvo 5 cyls, Volvo 16v, Volvo 8v both N/A and turbo.

Longer runners, the BTCC car had really long runners and instead of running them further out back, we decided to go up.
These sound so good with a turbo. /swede
I had a 855 10V 2.0 NA , with a little ecu tune, and KN filter ....it made app. 135 hp . Which engine is this ?
Love the shithousery on first drive with it done. EXACTLY like me and the boys after leaving the exhaust shops or modifying at a mates place and then just passing ourselves laughing at the new exhaust volumes

The plan is to keep it N/A all the way, just like the original BTCC Estate - this project isnt/wont be about high HP, instead simple, raw, throw back vibes.

Yes, what VOLVO did to get BTCC winning power was rather involved - like cutting up the heads and moving the camshafts so they could get better valve and port angles...
