How Much Faster? Weight Reduction & Track Alignment - 850 Project S2E02

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

►In the last episode, the 850 returned to the track and shaved two seconds off its quickest time! But the job’s not done. Now that all of the major modifications are out of the way, it’s time for Jacob to dial it in. Winning in the BTCC meant low weights and aggressive alignments; both are on the way for $850 850.
With the help of some friends, Jacob strips the Volvo down and tilts in some camber before heading back to the FCP Euro Proving Ground to knock a few more seconds off the 850’s fastest lap. Will the new improvements help Jacob channel his inner Rickard Rydell? Tune into the next episode of “The 850 Project” Season 2 and watch the 850 and Jacob’s driving “level up!”

    Nice job! I stripped in the same way my 850 2,5 liter 20 valve for some track day action and measured weight for every part! The most heavier is back seat back support part. Unfortunately I scrapped that car, because head gasquet was damaged and water went in cylinders. Now I have 850 estate with B5204S engine for the BTCC project and it sits while I am collecting parts. For brakes I got the set with four caliper magnesium BREMBO supports and 330mm rotors in front and 2 caliper alloy supports with 300mm rotors at the back from Mercedes Benz W220 S500, the funny thing is, that You can put the rotor on volvo without rebuilding anything - it just fits. :D

    I love this series! awesome to see p80 content. During the alignment you mentioned caster, BNE Dynamics sells spherical control arm bushings that allow you to add positive caster Also they sell spherical shifter cable end bushings and they made a HUGE difference in shifter feel (and throw), combining that with the delrin shifter base bushings and it feels incredible. Love the content!

  • @fcpeuro

    @fcpeuro

    Жыл бұрын

    Glad you love the series so far, Jeremy! We love BNE Dynamics and have upgraded shifter cable end bushings in the 850! We're using a C70 Convertible (solid mount) subframe in the car, which uses 4 bolt control arms. BNE's spherical control arm bushings are only for the original two bolt control arms, unfortunately.

  • @jeremyogburn5888

    @jeremyogburn5888

    Жыл бұрын

    @@fcpeuro ah gotcha, did not know they were exclusive to the two bolt. The shifter base bushings are also a huge tangible difference from Snabb, they keep the shifter solid where it bolts to the floor and they're only $45, makes it feel gated in combo with the cable end bushings. I was curious about the chassis brace you added, do you think that by itself made enough difference to justify buying one new? I know you guys got yours used which seems like the route to go I've just never seen one

    do you adjusterd the rear axle? it is adjustable quite alot and when that is not giving it. They you can bend a little in it to be able to give more where you need it. left side does change the right side when you do adjust. Also. Do some look on MPRE (DOT) SE and buy the rear buschings and the camberplate 3* (that gives around 5* camber. the 5* camberplate does give you around 7*) also buy the inside buschings and be able to change the angle on the inner part of the axle to be able to get more or less angles. I did buy the set and i did put more camber on the outside but then i did adjust the "inside" to get more closer to my goal. You can do alot whit 850 cars. Also do put dubbel swaybars in the rear (there is like 4 different mm thickness on them )just put a bit of metal in the "thin" part of it and weld it together. 2 longer bolts and it does a bit also.

    The best Volvo build video ever! What spring rates are you using? Did disconnecting the front sway bar offer more initial bite at turn in? Any oil starvation issue on the track? The stock oil pan does not provide much protection from oil sloshing around. Thanks for the great contents.

  • @fcpeuro

    @fcpeuro

    Thanks, Fortis! We're running 9kg front and 5kg rear for spring rates. We have not had any issues with oil starvation on the track. The RN engines have a better oil pan than the original N engine oil pan. An even better upgrade would be an R oil pan.

    Needs sway bars, real bad... typical Volvo wagon. Also you have to find a way to stop feeding the wheel.

  • @fcpeuro

    @fcpeuro

    Жыл бұрын

    In season 1, we installed a Euro-spec V70R rear sway bar but kept the stock front sway bar to help prevent understeer. It does still have a bit of body roll, but that's not necessarily a bad thing! Too stiff of a suspension can hinder performance, it's key to find a balance of compliance and control. Feeding the wheel is definitely an issue due to the large-diameter steering wheel and relatively slow steering rack. We solve this in the next episode, stay tuned!
