Fairly sure Grimsby is named after a character from a medieval epic poem about a dude getting revenge for his murdered family

"by" is also Nordic for town, right?
Apparently "Grim" was a nickname Odin used when undercover, and "-by" comes from the Norse "village". So "Grimsby" is basically "Odin snuck through this village once"

Welcome, new football/soccer/potential AFC Wimbledon fans! And John, it truly does make me smile that, and I mean this lovingly, you've found a new audience for your greatest hits. Nerdfighters have heard this one already a few times 😉
As a life long football fan. I can say that was the most exciting final I have ever seen. Also as a French person and supporter, I went into the game knowing that if Argentina won it was a well deserved win for Messi. I honestly got teary eyed when they won.
Yeah it’s cool, I mean I’m never going to watch it again until the next World Cup but I will definitely be watching the next World Cup

@@marcusmosimann well no, he's fairly spot on. 87% of France's 2018 WC winning team were immigrants or children of immigrants. There's nothing wrong with that, although it would be nice to see teams like Algeria, Morocco & DR Congo retain some of their best talent for the sake of competition, especially with there being 10 African teams in the next world cup.

I'm your inverse! You're an American in love with association football, I'm a European in love with gridiron football. Whenever I watched a game of soccer, I need to watch a game of football afterwards in order to remind me that a gentle tap to the shoulder does not induce mind-bending pain and/or forces somebody to fall and roll around on the floor for 30 seconds.

John: Grim was a viking, its his village. His bay. Literally Grim's Bay
So true! Some of the best experiences I’ve had a football matches were at Huish Park watching the Yeovil Glovers with a few thousand people.
Got into football because of the podcast. I follow Wimbledon casually, but Chelsea really called my name. Haven’t looked back.
I come from football country and yet I can't really engage with the sport - partly because Greek football fans can be really violent and I'm not about that - but it warms my heart how much you love it, John. I await all the AFC Wimbledon updates each week with trepidation and excitement on your behalf.
i know this one! the suffix -by is an Old Norse in origin, as the Vikings had a hold on much of the north of England pre-1066. -by meant farm, therefore Grimsby is Grim's farm, whoever he may be. i study linguistics at university and live too close to Grimsby for my liking
The best part about Grimsby Town FC is that they’re not based in Grimsby and haven’t been since 1899, they’re based in neighbouring Cleethorpes yet they’ve chosen to stick with being named after the town which is nation wide denounced as being one of the worst places, now that’s commitment
My coworker was watching the World Cup during work and we all decided to put it on and watch together (I work on a sort of assembly line so it’s chill to watch tv and do our jobs at the same time). Anyway I fell in love during Argentina vs Australia surprising everyone including myself bc I’ve never been interested in sports until now. Watch the premier league and champions league for the rest of the year, you'll love them. You should definitely choose a team if you haven't already. I suggest liverpool or Newcastle
I understand very little little of football and honestly never been a much of a fan of this game. but the final was hell of a thing to watch. my country is not a participant in the FIFA but if you could see the ambiance here due to the excitement of the game. people roaming the streets chanting for the teams they support, every time Argentina or France made a goal you could hear fireworks cracking somewhere closer. and at every home on that day people are gathered with their extended family members, neighbours or friends just to have the enjoyment together. it's all about that community getting altogether for the mutual love of a game happening kilometres away from here. this is some next level experience.
If you try to get into football, Tottenham Hotspur has been my lifelong team, and is a pretty fun one to get behind.
my dad is a fervent AFC Wimbledon supporter, to the point that he travels cross-country to see them play most weeks, so it's lovely to see someone as well-known as John support them so enthusiastically. I know that it isn't exactly a new thing, but still wanted to appreciate it haha
Some people think football [soccer] is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that. Bill Shankly
So, about Grimsby; it's actually an old, *old* town. Dating back to the vikings. There's 2 theories; one is that it's named after the person that found it, a fisherman named Grim & then followed by the Norse word for villages, byr (meaning the name was Grim's But, Grim's village, which became "anglicised" over the years to Grimsby) The 2nd is that it's named after one of the many names of Odin; "Grim" meaning mask, and "Grimnir" meaning masked one. Add Byr on, then it's anglicised down to Grimsby today
Last year I, at age 38, discovered sport for the first time. Not any form of football in my case, but World Chase Tag. I went across the sea to London to see the finals in May. It feels like a strange new facet of my being. And it's a small enough sport that many of the athletes hang out with the fans in a Discord server, which is nice.
I really, *really* don't care about football. But gosh darn if seeing a grown ass man giggle about his favourite pastime doesn't warm the cockles of your heart.
I agree, and have since I fell in love with football (soccer) as a kid. Football is definitely the most important of the unimportant things.

Nothing beats the 1934 and 1938 World Cups when Mussolini’s Italian National Tram conquered the world twice, brushing aside all opposition while wearing their famous black shirt jerseys.
I became a football fan when my local team went from 2nd division to winning the 1st division in 3 years. And god damn they got to the quarter finals of the uefa conference league. If that wasn’t enough, they handed Mourinho his greatest loss in his manager career 6-1!!! I really felt something in my heart and from then i have not missed one match. FK Bodø/Glimt 💛💛💛
I consider myself a pretty casual enjoyer of Football, but I do quietly root for the Nigerian team. I mostly follow their scores when google updates me about them. Otherwise, I tend to catch a few glimpses when I eat at Mexican Restaurants. But perhaps I'll find clips from this game and see. I also really like it when I get to see the women's football teams, they play HARD.

I was working a night shift during the final game and all of us were huddled in three or four to watch it on phone while totally ignoring our work and customers. The best part is when customers enter the store and see us like this actually get excited and ask us about the score 😆 I've never cared much for football and I doubt I will after that game, but it sure was one of the highlights of my life so far.

As a York City FC fan, I can't wait to experience the glory of the 4th tier someday when we get promoted again! At least we finally clawed our way out of regional football last season!
The joke about Grimsby reminds me of Jay Forman's joke that the town was named after "a Viking named Grim famous for his infectious positive energy"
Grimsby is a Danish name and got the name from the Viking who founded the town. His name is Grim and By means city in Danish. However in modern Danish, grim now means ugly, so if you wanna be annoying you can call it uglytown
I love how you say both soccer and football every time just to make sure everyone’s either included or confused 😂
Glad to see people getting into something new. I do wish we’d stop even mentioning the World Cup though. Their turning of a blind eye to slave labor and more is a concern, and shouldn’t be ignored for some people to kick a ball around.
i did become a soccer fan this year (not because of the world cup, but because my husband is really into it and i finally watched a match with him and now im hooked) and it truly is like this very often!!! here in Spain football is like everyones obsession for some reason lol

As a fan of both Wimbledon (because of John & AFC's past history) and Man City (Because of the Aguero goal & FIFA), what he's saying is especially true in English club football. It's unlike anything else before and since.
Love that John has come independently to the same conclusion that everyone in Britain has about Grimsby
Low-tier soccer can be pretty great. My local club is a 3rd-tier US team but the atmosphere is really fun. I'd honestly rather go to one of their matches than the closest MLS team.

John I live in Grimsby and I'd just like to say it's even worse than it sounds. A fun urban legend about the football stadium here is that allegedly there was once a journalist who climbed onto the roof to get a better view of the game and a strong wind blew him off, causing him to fall off and get crushed between the stadium wall and a fast food stand. Love your channel, doubly so now that I got a Grimsby mention
Well as someone from Grimsby, I can say that it definitely lives up to its name. No wonder the football team’s stadium actually isn’t in Grimsby
My favourite definition for Grimsby comes from Douglas Adams' book The Meaning of Liff: "GRIMSBY (n.) A lump of something gristly and foul-tasting concealed in a mouthful of stew or pie. Grimsbies are sometimes merely the result of careless cookery, but more often they are placed there deliberately by Freemasons. Grimsbies can be purchased in bulk from any respectable Masonic butcher on giving him the secret Masonic handbag. One is then placed in a guest's food to see if he knows the correct Masonic method of dealing with it. If the guest is not a Mason, the host may find it entertaining to watch how he handles the obnoxious object. It may be (a) manfully swallowed, invariably bringing tears to the eyes, (b) chewed with resolution for up to twenty minutes before eventually resorting to method (a), (c) choked on fatally. The Masonic handshake is easily recognised by another Mason, incidentally, for by it a used grimsby is passed from hand to hand. The secret Masonic method for dealing with a grimsby is as follows: remove it carefully with the silver tongs provided, using the left hand. Cross the room to your host, hopping on on leg, and ram the grimsby firmly up his nose, shouting 'Take that, you smug Masonic bastard.'" 😄 I'm a lifelong yellowbelly - born and bred in Lincoln - just down the road from Grimsby 😁
Love it!
I usually can only carve out time to watch during the world cup. I will say, may husband found some of the matches very entertaining and even got excited a few times (he doesn't watch or care about any sports so it was exciting)
I might be hispanic but the only time I watch futbol is when the worldcup is on or when my country plays someone else 😭😭😭
Not that big a fan, but i caught the last bit of the game and it was amazing, made me want to watch more soccer.
The origin of the name Grimsby is surprisingly cool, since the -by suffix is Norse for "village" or a similar settlement, and Grim is probably a personal name
I always undermined this quote until I was the Mondial, it's truly the most unimportant important thing.
It's because there's actual jeopardy. In franchise football, it's exclusive, in league football you have to be good or someone else will take your place. That's why Ryan Reynolds fell in love with it and bought Wrexham.
Grimsby definitely lives upto its name
Living here in Canada I'm a relatively new Wimbledon fan. What's the best way to watch or listen to the matches?
I used to go out with a girl at university who was from Cleethorpes, which is close to Grimsby. Let me tell you, Grimsby absolutely lives up to its name. It’s got to be the most depressing place in the north of England. And I’m including Todmorden in that list. Todmorden is another place that’s as bad as it sounds.
I live next to the AFC Wimbledon stadium, never seen one of the games but they sound pretty good
I realize the Grimsby confusion is probably for comedic effect, but here's why British place names are the way they are: m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/p42C3NOghZrUkZc.html Maybe you could duet/ blind react the beginning? (Or the whole thing)

Isn't Grimsby old English? Where I like in Norway there is a Grimstad which basically means the same thing. "By" meaning town or city and "stad" meaning place. "Grim" still I think means ugly in Norwegian but funnily enough I grew up in Essex UK near a village called "Ugley", so yeah...
Proud Grimsbonian here. It was between Grimsby and "Grim City"
the suffix by means village. its named for a Viking called Grim, its bascally Grims Village.
Grimsby has a Norse ending so probably Viking
I think Grimsby is from the time of the Danelaw and is Norse for Grim's Town. So Grimsby Town may be redundant.
I was so frustrated after France lost but I couldnt be actually mad because gosh it was a great game
Where do I watch the fourth tier English football?? Is it on cable?
Now I'm curious how the naming meeting for Pity Me ended up being so on-the-nose.
Grimsby literally means “Grim’s Village” in Old Norse.
Grimsby's only accolade is that it's not Scunthorpe.
I'm sure there was a lot of buzz, but mostly it was just depressing to consider.
I personally love the name Grimsby (I named my fictional town that, there are vampires that live under the ground there)
