As it is so often the case, it is not the sport that matters, but the fate and values of the people that play and support the sport. So, essentially, what you are experiencing is empathy.
@Data3rror

It's subjectively exciting to John (and a lot of Nerdfighteria) since we're invested in the team for an array of reasons. It's objectively exciting since English football is usually dominated by older, wealthier clubs, and AFC Wimbledon is neither of those. (Preamble: There are many "leagues" of varying prestige and publicity in English football; the best three teams over the course of each season get promoted to a "better" league, whereas the worst three teams get demoted. Predictably, more funding/publicity/etc. is pooled in the upper leagues.) Wimbledon is a relatively underfunded club, with the smallest budget and resources of any team in their league, and was only formed 14 years ago to play in a lil' regional league; them consistently playing so well over 40+ games this year and being promoted to a more prestigious league was a real long shot, and makes for their sixth promotion in ten years. This evokes an even bigger response from supporters since their team is largely community-owned (most English football clubs are more privately-owned), so it feels even more like a community victory. There's another layer to this - the team that previously played out of Wimbledon was bought out by a billionaire-type and relocated elsewhere, which is why the current Wimbledon team is so new. That previous team (the MK Dons) plays in the same league that current-Wimbledon just got promoted to, so now Old Wimbledon will be playing matches against New Wimbledon. Bit of a rivalry there.

I'm crying and I'm laughing and I have never been so happy about the result of a football match before in my life, I don't know how you do this to me, John. I'm so emotional now ahh it's so lovely to see you so happy. I love that you filmed the father & son and the crowd's reaction rather than the pitch- after all Wimbledon is all about the fans. This is a lovely example of what happens when you have hope! Ah hope, that thing with feathers who never asked a crumb of us. Up the DONs and up hope and up being unironically enthusiastic about the things that make us happy. DFTBA, John and congrats to AFC Wimbledon on now being a THIRD tier English soccer team!
I started following this epic journey in the podcast and I can't imagine a better ending. I have no idea how any of it works, except the basics (kick ball in net), and yet I found myself grinning and I actually yelled when the penalty kick went in. So excited for all those involved in the team!

Ever since I found out AFC Wimbledon is being promoted I couldn't wait to see johns very happy video about it. That smile at the end alone was well worth it (:

Bought a last minute student ticket at the stadium and ended up in the sixth row right by the goal. Atmosphere was absolutely incredible! AFC Wimbledon fans are like no others and I'd really like to thank you for bringing their amazing community to my attention and allowing me to take part in such an amazing day!
I have never been known to care about Soccer/Football before, and never have sports distracted me from a day at Disney World. Thanks to you John, I have a new sport to follow and a new team to root for! Congrats to the Dons!

Hi John, As an AFC Wimbledon fan and season ticket holder I would like to say thank you for, not only the money you give to my club but, for the awesome enthusiasm and passion you share for the dons. It is reassuring and genuinely very fitting that a club such as Wimbledon has someone such as yourself in an influential position. You are exactly what Wimbledon is and you embody the ethos of hardwork and togetherness that we thrive upon. You have immensely helped my club and have taken part in one of the greatest stories in modern football. For that sir, I salute you. One of my very favorite things in this brief and endless consciousness is John Green's excitement and happiness.
In this magical week that was, I saw Hank (et al) perform two shows; took part in a livestream with Michael Aranda and the WIDRN community, after which we went to slay an Enderdragon, after which we hung out online while Michael Twitched an episode of Overwatch; announced the winner of the Smudge Memorial VidCon Fellowship to Abi Rein, who, with the help of an awesome online community and indiegogo, we will be flying in from Baltimore for VidCon; followed along with KZread producers SHIPWRECKED COMEDY's completion of their "Poe Party" web series (coming soon!); and then rode along (virtually) for Mr. Toad (aka John Green)'s wild ride from Indianapolis to Wimbledon. Three years ago I did not know any of these people. KZread has been very good to me. Thank you John, thank you, Vlogbrothers, thank you, KZread, thank you, all you beautiful online community members. See you at VidCon! (Well, some of you. The rest of you...see you here on the interwebz.)
