Why does the 980 pro 4TB have better performance than the 980 pro 2 TB. Also will you do real world loading times in the future to see how the benchmarks correlate to real world performance?

@@ACE112ACE112 Larger capacities have larger SLC caches and sometimes more DRAM cache as well. But the impact on real world performance is minimal. And 3D Mark includes multiple loading time tests into the calculation already :)

Read my comments below why SSD that costs SGD1000 dollars cannot sell. In the pentium 4 era, I have bought a desktop only and it can costs up to SGD 1500 dollars, 1000 SGD dollars SSD is nothing if you do not believe key in SGD 1500 and use 1000 SGD Dollars for SSD, 119 SGD for Ram DDR 4 2 x 8gb klevv, 384 SGD for amd B550 motherboard + AMD 4600G+ SGD 40 for MATX casing and money is not a problem, PSU always can pull out from an old PC and if afraid maybe 6 cores need more power, no problem can get coolermaster 750PSU. I can tell you are an american woman and secretly whisper she look a bit like ellie goulding.

i'm pretty sure this drive released before the t500 & the 990 pro. was possibly the best gen4 drive on the market on release. the refresh of this drive is the solidigm p44 pro. after sk hynix acquired intel's nand division, they rebranded the new conglomerate as "solidigm." p44 pro was a marginal upgrade over the p41 plat on release, but since then solidigm have released a software package that *they say* optimizes performance in some workloads. i haven't personally gotten to test their claims yet, but it's another interesting gen4 drive at least. "sk hynix + intel nand division = solidigm" might be worth keeping an eye on, imo. thanks as always for the fantastic work!

It's still the best GEN 4 drive if performance per watt is considered which is quite impressive given when it released. This may not be as important for a desktop use case, but can make a big difference when used in a mobile device.

@@Ilost11 this is the exact reason i switched to the sk hynix p31 gold gen 3 drives in my laptop, instead of the hot & power hungry 970 evo+ i started with. going with two of those instead of the samsung drives quite literally added extra battery time on a single charge. wild how different the power draw is between the p31 & evo+ drives!

As usual greatly appreciate your thorough approach of actually talking about all aspects instead of just performance. Glad to see better availability... Now if we can get some Solidigm over there! I've been pretty disappointed in all of the reviews of their drives I've seen so far as nobody seems to have tested with and without their software. The former Intel SSD team was kept together and they've written custom software/driver which only works on the P44 Pro, P41 Plus and Intel 670. The P44 Pro is hardware identical to the Platinum P41, but with different firmware so the software doesn't work on the SK Hynix drive. I have 4 of the P44 Pro drives waiting for my next build, and gave a friend one for their PS5, so I'm not in the market but it sure seems like it would be good to get a look at the software to see if there are any meaningful differences. It's good to see that the SK Hynix Platinum P41 is definitely the best of the earlier PCIe 4.0 drives as the Crucial T500 just came out and Samsung 990 Pro was their second go. I've got one of the 2TB models sitting in the server box I put together earlier this year and have been really pleased with it.

Not even in the market for an NVME drive, but I always check out Nada's SSD reviews. Top tier. Always informative, with great recommendations for potential buyers!

I have this as my system drive and have a few months experience with it. It is phenomenally fast in all conditions and does indeed work well with basic MB cooling. Highly recommended 👍

It's less known brand in SSD market and yet this is the main reason why is this ssd so good and has stable speeds. I hope this company will continue to develop its solid-state drives and perhaps begin to produce its own branded RAM, and why not, after all, having more than 20 years of experience in the field of production semiconductor devices, they have all the necessary cards in their hands, and as practive has shown they know what they are doing.

What makes the SK Hynix P41 Platinum or Solidigm P44 Pro the best 2TB Gen 4 drive is that it has the best power efficiency of all GEN 4 drives on the market while being a top 3 performer in performance benchmarks across the whole segment without any of the reliability concerns Samsung or SN850X suffered. The difference in performance per watt in laptop use case makes this a consistent and clear winner. Furthermore, SK Hynix manufactures their own NAND flash and has their own controller. After all SK Hynix acquired Intel's SSD division several years ago and spun it off into Solidigm which is still one of the best players in the commercial SSD space and although they have less consumer models, they're great there too.

When I saw "SK Hynix P41 Platinum", I was wondering why Hynix was re-using naming they already used with Solidigm... But silly me, the Solidigm drive is the P41 Plus and is completely different. However, the Solidigm P44 Pro is apparently virtually identical SK Hynix P41 Platinum... I wish they would just simplify their branding haha. Go all-in on Solidigm for SSDs or just absorb it all into Hynix.

Yes, The P41 is great product among Gen 4 SSD so far. I use it for my Gaming desktop and runs very well and very satify its performance.

Thanks, I had been waiting for your review of the SK hynix P41 to see where it fell in your list of tests and tested SSD's. SK hynix seems to supply OEM storage for at least some Dell products. Their PC801 OEM series and Solidigm P44 pro have similar specifications to the P41 Platinum so I wonder if the performance is comparable as well? Thank you for posting this excellent review. Hynix products are reliable. I am interested to see how strong a performer this one is in the testing. I agree with your conclusions about this product. I also agree that price, together with perceived quality, is often what dictates the choice of SSD.

oh wow I just bought this SSD and this video appears out of nowhere XD, I'm glad the first impressions are positive.

I was deciding between this and the 990 Pro. I was worried about the "health" issues on the 990 Pro (though it's fixed) but ultimately went with the 990 Pro because it had a 4TB version.

990 pro health issue isn’t really about fast degrading nand life span, it was about falsely reporting to SMART. Actual life span does not change, problem is that its just annoying to see false number on the report(there is no way to update SMART data through firmware update). I ordred 990 pro, just because I need 4tb, and about order p41 2tb for my linux boot drive. Samsung and Hynix are two most reputable companies that uses in house controller and I trust them as well.

@@Tofunation Yes I've had too many issues with cheaper brands like Mushkin, and even issues with bigger brands like WD. But for whatever reason I've had zero issues with all my Samsung drives and Hynix.

@@JohnDoe-tv4zd not sure. i don't know what the life span was, but i had an 8TB mushkin that would not transfer files and shut off. I had it RMA'd and the one they sent me, had the same issue. Just something about the firmware did not play well on my system.

The Solidigm P44 Pro is basically the same drive but with different firmware. Same SK Hynix Aries controller, same SK Hynix LPDDR4 DRAM cache, same SK Hynix 176L TLC.

I purchased the Crucial T700 Gen5 NVme drive. And all I can say is Holy Moly! This thing is fast. 😲 If you blink while doing things, you will definitely miss it. 😋 This Gen5 drive is really really fast. Its paired up with the Gigabyte X670E Arorus Extreme and Ryzen 9 7950X and GSkill 128-TB of DDR5. All I can say to people is, if they can afford a Gen5 drive & can cool it down, definitely get one, because this thing is really fast. Only downside is, it runs super hot. I was forced to put it on the second NVMe slot down from the one next to the CPU. Because it ran so hot that it was overheating. And since my Gigabyte X670E Extreme has ALL PCIe's in Gen5 mode, I was able to slot it anywhere without losing performance. It does run hot. And the center motherboard metal plate helps it cool off, instead of the first slot with a small heatsink which is not enough for this thing.

Thanks! And I'm working on it, but last I heard is that they fired a large number of their staff and that we might never end up seeing them here.

Have ordered a new 7800x3d and Carbon 670e for a new system. Going through a few of you SSD videos to see what drives to use and thinking that spreading 3 of them throughout will workout better with OS on one, Pics/docs/music/downloads/etc on another then games on the 3rd . Maybe going with the best value WD SN 580 . Will have the top one spare ( has 2 on top to the cpu ) for later but the question is...... you see the performance in your graphs etc but what do they actually show us when sitting and waiting for something to load? Would you notice the difference between a Crucial T500, SK Htnix P 41 platnium or the WD SN580 ? Would it be a second ? I decided on the WD Blue from your video but for the OS would something better be noticeable?

So which SSD should I pick for a video editing+gaming+recording pc?

They do offer a heat sink version now it's on sale 😊

@Techtesters Can you (re-)test the SN570 2TB model? the 1TB has now fallen pretty much to the bottom of your charts, but the 2TB is fundamentally different. I bought one on Black Friday sales after I researched that it has the same NAND as the SN770 2TB model and the same controller as the SN770 1TB model. That means it also got rid of the static 12GB SLC cache in favor of the pseudoSLC covering the whole remaining free capacity. I expect it to be pretty much up there with the SN580 and SN770, except for sequential speeds that are limited by Gen 3. Unfortunately, after initial reviews for 1TB models, hardly anyone goes back to later introduced higher capacity models or hardware changes.

Have P31 1tb and 2tb. P41 still the same 1tb/2tb sizes. I might be okay for a 2tb. I do want to move to 4tb drives in the future.

I bought it for 100€ (2TB version) in april 2023. Honestly it's a monster, It was quite a deal !

It's basically: 1. T500 / 990 PRO 2. Hynix P41 3. SN850X 4. 980 PRO 5. P5 PLUS

A video on the history and future of SSD prices would be interesting. A quick internet search showed a heap of sites stating that prices are going down in 2024, and a heap of sites stating prices are going up in 2024. Here in Australia I have found prices to be fairly steady, but still higher than I would have expected by this stage. The SK Hynix P41 Platinum is basically unheard of here, if you find it, it is very overpriced. I just purchased a 2TB Kingston Fury Renegade nvme for $200AUD, by now I believe I should be able to get 4TB for approx $300, but they are over $600AUD. Ye olde 2.5" SSDs are somehow still pricey too.

Waarom is de Lexar nm790 niet getest? Afgezien dat deze in een externe behuizing niet goed is (want geen dram cache) doet hij zeker niet onder voor de andere ssd's wanneer geïnstalleerd in een desktop pc. Sterker nog: hij is op vele vlakken beter dan alle geteste Gen4 ssd's in deze grafieken. Verder een tip om de review te professionaliseren: in de thermal test ook de andere ssd's meenemen zodat je goed kunt vergelijken. Dat vergt wat werk (ik doe het zelf ook vaak), maar zo maak je de review wel compleet. Verder: complimenten voor dit kanaal, eigenlijk het enige review kanaal van Nederlandse bodem wat ik kijk naast alle Canadese/USA/Australie kanalen. Ga zo door!!!

English because it's easier: First, thanks! As for your questions: The answer to "why wasn't XX not tested" is usually that I don't have it yet. NM790 has gone through testing now though and will be included soon. As for thermal graphs like that, it'll look nice, but it will be absolutely worthless. There are way too many variables to do so in a fair and actually useful manner.

I miss the days of high end ssd's being MLC based. Especially when it comes to consistency/stress performance.

Any news on the crucial T500 throttling issues you mentioned in that video?

I got the 2 TB P41 Platinum for 82$ canadian (63 USD) for amazon prime day in July. Its installed in my PS5 with the Sabrent Heatsink made for the PS5. No complaints. All the games I have played which are all playstation exclusives that can hammer the SSD have never crashed so I am pretty happy.

There is something to be said about SSD's with every component on it made by the same company to go together. SK Hynix and Samsung are the only one's that every part of the NVME: DRAM Buffer, Controller and NAND chips (storage) are from them. Crucial which is owned by Micron is close though. Their drives have their NAND and DRAM from Micron, but with a Phison controller.

True but the ram put on the drives actually varies pretty heavily tbh. Look it up on tech power up. Hell my sn850x uses full ddr4 not lpddr4

Sk Hynix Platinum P41 is the absolute best gen 4 ssd drive on the market for Pc and PlayStation 5 !!!!!

The one most important stat that I find missing from all tech chanels bar 1 is cost per performance compared to others where we can see if were actualy getting hosed and another part would save us a small ransom. Its not like you dont have the variable to do this, but no one does, bar 1.

@@TechTesters I wonder, if someone would be able to create a formula or a calculator where based on certain criteria you could set out a price per performance score. Original could be based on MSRP with the possibility for the user to input a new price e.g. on sale. Could also add a comparison function to compare multiple SSDs with original MSRP prices and the ability to input a sale or updated price. Thoughts? I'm no mathematician or programmer just something that came to my head.

I think Solidigm P44 Pro has the same performance, maybe a bit better with Synergy driver, especially when it works with small files.

For the vast majority of gamers ….. and streamers uploading their content, a quality gen3 or gen4 NVME drive is more than fast enough! For those that are production heavy workloads and video editing etc is their livelihood, only then would you need to consider a higher end gen4 or gen5 NVME driver! If rumours are true, people need to get their storage drives asap with talk of price hikes in early 2024 of D-ram storage drives and pc ram.

are ssd enclosure good as external storage?

Any recommendations for an 500 gb ssd for just Operating System ? i think 1tb or 2 tb for just like 40-50 gb of os its pointless and stupid, and i dont want to partition an ssd ... so looking for the best 250 -500 gb ssd I currently have WD_BLACK 500GB SN750 SE NVMe + a radiator, but its been hot since day 1

Depends what you do with the system? SN750 SE was pretty weak overall, most modern SSDs are a lot better.

Literally the optane p1600x is perfect for you. 120gb, obliterates any nand drive in system performance and boots because of its random read throughput and latency(shaved 10-15 seconds off my boot time from a premium gen 4 ssd) and the last 40-80gb can be used as massively faster virtual memory. All for like $50-60 usd. It's alsi got capicators in it to act as batteries for power outages so its nigh immune from data corruption that way. You need a relatively good cpu to fully take advantage of it but it is significantly better regardless and for not all that much money either.

SK hynix doesnt seem to have a good distribution channel in India , resulting in it costing 30% more than 990 pro which makes it difficult to justify the choice. sadly Micro Crucial T500 hasn't yet launched in India .

I am a elite old gamer and because you are a woman and what I going to tell you will shocked 😮the gaming world. Why many gamers are still using hard disk is because there is no toilet break, coffee break and eat break and not because SSD last time cost 1000 dollars. When I wake up and on my PC and windows 7 is starting up slowly due to hard-disk, I quickly rushed to the toilet for 💦 watering break. Then when game loading slowly due to hard disk I quickly rushed to make 3 in 1 coffee break.

I would not recommend this to anyone. I had two replacements of it and none of them worked out for me. The speed dropped from 7000MB to 2000MB in less than 6 months. I had to return and request a full refund. Then I ended up getting a 990 Pro. I would not get anything beside samsung. Period….

I wouldn't recommend this drive. A lot of people (including myself) have noticed that the write speeds slow down to around 2200MB/s after a couple of months of usage. I was able to send mine back for a refund.
