    Thank you for posting this excellent product review. I built one system earlier this year with three (3) Western Digital Black SN850X drives. It was intended to be an acceptable, but not a high end, system for video editing. So far, the owner of that system says everything works well. I did have to do firmware updates on all 3 of the devices before I handed the new system over. So I expect the budget drives will likely need firmware updates, too.

    Thanks Lana for the review of these SSDs and making a recommendation to us normal consumers , I have been looking for a second drive that I might use inside a usb-nvme enclosure perhaps, this sn580 seems great and better than the nv2 in dramless category, it also beats my 980 pro 1tb in most tests Will the HMB concept also work if we use inside a usb-nvme enclosure? Since it'll be limited to 1000MBps max anyway so does hmb even matter, dram SSD may also perform similarly in an enclosure, right ? Please also do some tests with USB nvme enclosures for added info maybe, also if small icons can be added in graph to show dram/dram-less/hmb etc

  • @Xfade81

    @Xfade81

    9 ай бұрын

    The ssd's controller still controls the hmb (i'd call it SLC cache) just fine in a enclosure. You will still notice a difference between a dram ssd and slc cached ssd's like this one, depending on the workload. But it's far less difference when used on a desktop. I use Lexar nm710 2TB nvme's in my 2 m.2 enclosures, they are 20 euro's cheaper than WD but better specs, and also 5 year warranty. Shame they are missing in the lists, as the nm710 and nm790 would walk circles on most of em.

    According to TechPowerUp, sn580 drops to SATA speed at ~350GB mark. That means if you copy/write a 400GB (or anything bigger than 350gb) file to the disk, you will only get its marketed speed till ~350GB, after which it will come down to ~600mbps.

But my guess is that it will do just fine since the WD SN750 SE looks to be ok, although moving games takes a little longer, the load times looks to be fine. And if one game in the future do not run well, that you always have the internal storage to fall back on. And the SN580 looks to be a lot better than the WD SN750 SE but the file transfer might be about the same (On the PS5).

It has become really complicated to compare SSDs in general these days without having to become an expert yourself on the topic. 52 euros on amazon prime days for 1TB is hard to beat. I guess I'll buy two of them. One for my dads hackintosh build and one for my AM5 build. It can physically work but I wouldn’t recommend it. Buy a dram based drive for ps5.

    Too bad they not making 4TB version. I would buy it for sure for double 2TB price. I am looking for cheap 4TB ssd with TLC and theres nothing at all.

    Agreed! It's mostly cheap QLCs or mid-range and above TLCs. Transcend 250-series is priced well in our region, but not in all.

    IMO there shouldn't even be a 500GB version. 1 thru 8 TB.

    250GB versions exist for people who dont need 500GB. No reason to spend any edditional money at all if you will never ever take advantage of the extra space of added speed. I only keep my OS on my 500GB 980 Pro. I wish it was a 250GB for which I could have spent less money.

    250 GB might have been okay 5 or 6 years ago. No one should be building a system with a 250 GB boot drive today.

    They literally cost the same as 500GB drives here, I don't get it. Give me 4 TB!

    As a boot disk, it's 100% fine. I have a KC3000, 500GB, and I'm only using 80GB (windows 11 + all my applications). I keep all my stuff on a 2nd disk (regular 4TB 2.5" SSD)

  • @MrDilldock

    @@BOZ_11 Yes it's fine, but if the cost of a terabyte drive is not that much more money, why not get one? The last build I made I got the Crucial P5 2tb. I've built systems with 128 GB boot drives and they've filled up fast!

    @@MrDilldock yeah 128GB is too small. Gotta be 240GB minimum for a boot disk, or 500GB for comfort
