Life can be so unpredictable-joys and sorrows, beautiful blessings and distressing difficulties, can come unexpectedly. Our life’s dreams and plans can change in an instant. We all know this to be true. So how can we find peace amid such turbulence?
Horatio Spafford knew something about life’s unexpected challenges. He was a successful attorney and real estate investor who lost a fortune in the great Chicago fire of 1871. Around the same time, his beloved four-year-old son died of scarlet fever.
Thinking a vacation would do his family some good, he sent his wife and four daughters on a ship to England, planning to join them after he finished some pressing business at home. However, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was involved in a terrible collision and sunk. More than 200 people lost their lives, including all four of Horatio Spafford’s precious daughters. His wife, Anna, survived the tragedy. Upon arriving in England, she sent a telegram to her husband that began: “Saved alone. What shall I do?”
Horatio immediately set sail for England. At one point during his voyage, the captain of the ship, aware of the tragedy that had struck the Spafford family, summoned Horatio to tell him that they were now passing over the spot where the shipwreck had occurred.
As Horatio thought about his daughters, words of comfort and hope filled his heart and mind. He wrote them down, and they have since become a well-beloved hymn:
When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll-
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to know
It is well, it is well with my soul.
Perhaps we cannot always say that everything is well in all aspects of our lives. There will always be storms to face, and sometimes there will be tragedies. But with faith in a loving God and with trust in His divine help, we can confidently say, “It is well, it is well with my soul.”

    When you see actual tears in the eyes of the performers then you know that God’s spirit had dwelt there celebrating the moment. Amen. ❤️

    We get a close-up of the woman at 4:20 but I know that many members of the choir are also crying at this point in the song, myself included. No matter how many times we did this piece it remained a very emotional number to perform and stay detached enough to be able to sing through the feelings it generates. There were always sniffles when it ended.

    SingerGuy59 I’m sooo pleased Our Kind Heavenly Father allowed me to meet Dr. Wilberg and request this arrangement be commissioned in honor of my Beloved Pastor. The first time Dr. Wilberg sent me the rough draft I was balling my eyes out!! THANK YOU to all of your beautiful voices coming together to create such angelic singing in Praise unto our God!! Even tho we are going through this trying time in our World right now, it IS well!! Blessings to you all!!! 🙏🏽

    My dad specifically requested this song be sung for his funeral, which occurred a couple months ago. Now I can't hear it without thinking of him. I loved this music before. Now it's a memorial to my Heavenly Father and my earthly father.

    I've listened to this song and the story, it stuck with me, I didn't know why, after having two of my children murdered a year and three months apart having one son left, no justice here on earth, it's been eight years for my youngest son and seven years for my oldest and only daughter, God with much Grace and Mercy has brought me to this point I can say it is well with my soul despite the pain I'll always have until he calls me home. He's a good and just God every man must go through him.

    My heart aches for your loss. Having just lost my son 34 days ago, makes me think of how much easier it has been, for me, as I was with hm for his final hugs.I is Well, with my soul. Then the other anthem, 'Be Strong In the Lord", is the other hymn that is giving me strength and courage, to get up and move through my daily activities.

    Family sang it to us when my husband was in ICU with covid and a brain tumor. Hearing the words of the song and feeling the music brought a sense of holiness and peace as we prepared for his passing. Then it was sung last week at my husband's funeral. I feel God's reassurance every time I hear this music. Yes, through Jesus Christ, it is well with my soul!

    I am sure that I was led to this song by Angels. I have listened to it before, but tonight listening I am moved the most. Having two family members pass on, so close in time, grieving feels so heavy, but listening to this beautiful hymn sung by one of my favorite choirs is a Godsend. And I am now told by God and Angels..."we are here, we are always here, you don't have to hold your grief alone, we are here, and when you cannot stand, we shall carry you, we are here for you and All."

    So Beautiful. Your testimony has inspire me to share mine. I could never understand how this man could say it was well with his soul, until tonight. I have lost my parents, close family members ,friends , my only sister and 11 months ago , I lost my dearly beloved husband after almost 53 1/2 years of marriage. But through his death, and his example of having a close relationship with God, I began a journey to get a clearer picture of the Face and Heart of of God, whose Love for me is incomprehensible! God has shown me in countless ways, that He cares so deeply, so individually, so personally, and so unconditionally for me and my disabled daughter, who lives with me. The icing on the cake is that God has promised He will come back to earth again, and take us all Home to live with Him and our loved ones forevermore. Yes, it is finally Well with My Soul, because I have experienced the Unfathomable Love of God and I Love Him back with all my Heart and Soul. He has shaken me into His Reality through countless life-saving miracles this year. My heart and soul are absolutely full of Gratitude and Love Overflowing for Him. And again, I say: Yes, It is Well with my Soul.

    I’m an atheist but having studied music, I have always loved sacred music. This is definitely one of my favourite hymns. Knowing the inspiration behind it, we can all relate to it regardless of faith.

    As a child I listened to the choir after going to bed. I listened to Richard Evans and the spoken word as part of the beautiful experience drawing my sad.heart up to God for my new dad was always drunk. I was frightened of the angry sounds. He finally received help, God bless 12 step programs, and he and my precious mother are long gone, I am 83 now, but still praise and thank God for the healing wonderful ministry of your heavenly music I can still lie in bed, in the dark and know God is near as I listen. God bless every soul that is part of your gift from God to the world.

    So, back in my senior year of high school, we played a band arrangement of this beautiful hymn. We would play it with so much passion even our director would cry onstage, and i was known not to be able to finish the piece because i was crying too hard. Now, I’ve never been particularly religious, on and off church goer my whole life, but i recently got the pleasure of staying in coast guard boot camp for an extra 3 months due to a stress fracture. I can say without a doubt that it was the hardest thing i’ve ever done, staying there for a total of 5 months, but what really got me through it was sunday mass. Of course, every service we would sing hymns from the hymnal and i would always find some comfort in them. One day though, i was just kind of messing around, flipping through the book, and for whatever reason decided to stop. I looked down, and there it was, It Is Well With My Soul. It was truly one of the most profound moments of my life. It made me realize that I was going to be OK. I thank God every day that He brought me to that page.

    When I was a child, this song was always sang by members of the Methodist Church when necrological services happen. Back then, I don't belong to any Church, but I admired the song. I asked for a copy from the Pastor. I was in tears when I realized the profound meaning of the song. It was then that I realized why they always sang it every necrological service. When I learned about the Atonement, it was then that I loved the song. Years after I experienced heartbreaking life challenges- death of loved ones, persecution, and many others blows in life. With faith in the Lord Jesus Christ I know everything will be alright. It is well with my soul!

    Often I fail to recognize that while the choir sings together, they sing as individuals. I think about each individual singer singing this hymn, and how they each feel and each identify with it in relation to each of their unique struggles. I don't believe they sing passively as a collective choir, but I feel that they actively and from the heart express their earnest ponderings.

    While that is true, it's much more like one large being, especially in the last bits of these kind of songs. Somewhere within the music, you all meld together and become one musical force, unstoppable. It's pretty incredible actually when you experience it first hand (I've sung this specific song and it really happens in this one). While you are separate individuals, you rely on each other to create the sound the audience hears.

    In addition to the one sister near the end whose tears are quite visible, I noticed that some of the other choir members’ eyes were welling up, and I think I saw some other tears as well. This is such a moving hymn - it’s amazing that they were able to keep it together and sing at all!

    My church sang this after communion service and some people had tears in their eyes. I felt like crying too. The presence of God must have been in His Holy Sanctuary!

    To this day, this arrangement is in my top 3 favorites that we have sung in the Choir. So full of hope and love from our Savior, that even in our darkest depths of despair, we can still find his love and assurance of peace.

    Beautiful song with a powerful message! I love the close-up of the choir member with tears on her cheeks. That is how I feel...the glorious message of a personal Savior, and the hope He brings touches our souls in a personal way. Despite all the chaos in the world today, through Him it can be eternally 'well with our souls.'

    The thing that makes this choir/orchestra so nice to listen to is they have the perfect balance between the choir/orchestra along with great balance of sound from all the ranges to where you can hear everything, the highs and lows, and no voice is lost. That is what any musical ensemble yearns to achieve is that balance.

    I have the privilege of knowing several of these singers personally. It is touching watching this video and knowing what is behind it for some of them personally - severe health challenges, debilitating anxiety and depression, and the struggles of work, life, and family. Thanks to each of you for your reminder to all of us that it can be well with our soul no matter what happens.

    I am so touched by this song and seeing all those people. In my other public reaction I already mentioned my own health problems, and when I see all those people singing and creating the most beautiful music; I see that divine touch, praying that the presence of God will be and stay in our lives forever; let all our soles be well in His presence.     "It is well with my soul". This doesn't mean that we will not feel sorrow because of our trust in God. But what it does mean when we say "it is well with my soul" is that we trust Him and know that this earthly life, while important, is but a blip on the radar of our eternal existence, and that there is so much more that He has to offer us. Pains, sorrows, and afflictions cannot undo what the Savior has done for us, because he took those upon himself and only asks that we call upon the Father in His name, as he called upon His Father for strength and courage to not only endure this life, but to thrive.
