In fairness, there are two Trumps. There's Trump the Politician, standing in front of the courthouse and trying to act like a tough guy to engorge his base. And there's Trump the Defendant, who is probably just smart enough to follow his lawyers' advice and not willingly stick his neck in that noose. As cover, Trump the Politician tells the lie that Trump the Defendant is not being permitted to testify And he counts on his base not being able or willing to see through that lie.

While no one is stopping him from testifying on the stand if he chooses to do so, I'd imagine pretty much everyone involved has told him it would be a bad move. He has a VERY hard time telling the full truth. Do you expect him to not perjure himself while on the stand?
