@Icebergeification That sounds like a factor in his decision, definitely. But that's just one of many that combine to give the result. One of the most interesting concepts in science fiction is to have an alien life form that is not human interacting with humans. It lets us step outside of who we are, to better understand ourselves.

Isaac is like the outsider, observing the interactions within a group yet not understanding them directly. His methods of joining in may be different, but as we see here, they are not incompatible. There's a saying about "doing the right thing for the wrong reason"; Isaac simply did the right thing for a different reason, benefiting himself _and_ Topa.

Personally I don't think Isaac really knows why he did the procedure. Yes, the crew liking home more was most definitely part of it, but I think there was more to it. He doesn't offer to do the procedure until it is said Clair would have to leave the ship if she did it. I believe Isaac did it so he could remain close to Clair. I don't think he realizes that was his true motivation though. This is my humble opinion anyway.
@hyrinshratu

My thinking is, Isaac doesn't have emotions so much as he has preferences. He prefers the company of Claire, and prefers that she be happy. He knew she would be unhappy resigning her commission, so he took action to ensure she was happy. He prefers the efficient function of the ship, and the crew hating him impacted that efficiency, therefore he took action to better his standing with the crew.

@Lucas Elder I thought that was the case. There's a clip here on KZread involving time travel where Isaac is in human form and gets to do the "android vs. human" scene. I haven't seen the whole episode, but just this one part gives me fond memories of Data on TNG doing the same sort of things, with just a hint of _The Six Million Dollar Man_ scenes where Steve Austin would take a smug person down a notch. It's an in-joke, we as the audience know what will happen, it's all in how the characters perform the scene that make it enjoyable to watch.

I like to think issac experiences emotion, but in a more direct way. Emotions for humans follow their own logical processes in the brain, but we dont have direct knowledge of those processes. We experience them through feelings and physical sensations. They essentially run in the background. Isaac on the other hand would process emotions no differently than he would other information, and whereas human emotions work off of illogical systems that dont always fit reality, isaac would process his emotions in relation to reality 24/7. This would be why some human ideas of emotion confuse him. He doesnt experience them through the same medium and the illogical systems they work off of make no sense.

Personally, I find it annoying that they seem to constantly butt heads with him because of how he acts despite knowing that he is a mechanical being. IT just lacks common sense because they get offended by some of the things he says or does even though they should know he is not the same as a regular person. He does not understand emotion or independent thought in the same way and he is constantly trying to learn. They seem to forget that he is a machine and therefore going by more base programming than say an AI intelligence. The fact alone that he was able to defy the Kaylon primary at all is a feat in and of itself and his initial siding should not be taken so personally because his capacity to think independently of the collective had only just begun to evolve.
