IS200- Budget Drifter

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Benny’s budget drift car isn’t allowed back on the public roads after being rear ended and written off.
It is therefore the perfect candidate for some side ways spaghetti action!
First off, he will need to give it a tidy up in preparation for tapping walls & trading paint at the track.
Benny's Custom Works brings you everything automotive!
Weekly Episodes right here on KZread, as well as the shop with new & used performance parts for most Japanese makes and models.

Benny makes this stuff look like a walk in the park. Please consider the risk factors and talk to a qualified mechanic, as well as a psychologist, if you’re thinking of attempting anything you’ve seen on the show.
Take into consideration your safety, the safety of others, as well as your vehicle’s best interests- warranty, etc.
Unless you’re trained & qualified to do so, we don’t recommend modifying your vehicle in any way. Stickers don’t add HP unless installed correctly.

I want to say thank you Benny. These little "tricks" of the trade and shop knowledge tidbits are truly valuable pieces of knowledge. It's not stuff you learn in a book. You only learn this stuff working in the shop and running into problems you need a creative solution for. And it's priceless knowledge once you know it. The little things like showing us how to hold up the Transmission when you pull the engine, with a ratcheting jack supported on the front member. And pull off the old oil filter with the new filters box so you can keep your hands clean. It's such great knowledge to have and I want to thank you for sharing it.

A tip i learned from school is for thinner metal is if you beat and smash it to much and it gets like a tin can where you can pop it in and out is take a torch and heat the metal up until starts turning a little red then hit it with water or air and it will shrink itself and tighten up. Obviously be careful with an open flame and dont use it on structure areas as it makes the metal brittle and weak by heating it up. More for when you need to be picky about the repair. Hope it helps, try it out. Thanks for the content Benny! Hope to see you soon at drag week

i got mine for $2800 in nz. needed a car, wasnt quite what i wanted but as i said. i needed a car to get to and from work. the old levin was dying on me. got it with 226,000 kms. now has 270,000 a few years later, had to replace a few ignition coils. the tyres, rear pads, and some bulbs. thats it. nice reliable car. really wanted the rs200 4 cylinder version with the 3sge 2.0L 210hp 6 speed manual, limited slip diff etc.. but i got the as200 6 cylinder with the 1gfe 2.0L 160hp 4 speed auto, OPEN diff... oh well, still fun and slippery in the wet. and a really nice daily driver. and a damn beautiful car. that open diff is a pain though. i hate only spinning one wheel. you have to really throw the thing to get it properly sideways and spinning both wheels, especially given its a damn automatic. oh well. as i said, fun in the wet. and as a bonus if you can only get it sideways in the wet. your tyres last ALOT longer.. pretty sure if this guy is serious about making this just a fun drift car etc. he will weld the diff. it would be super fun and slippery then :-)

Mine was a lot worse than the is200 but came out pretty sweet. Ended up loving the ef for a few more years before it was torn down and stripped.

I think a lot of young people who want to get into drifting need to watch this series on the IS200 to show them that it's not about spending $100 000 on a car. At the learning stage it's about seat time and having some fun.

Exactly. Get a rear wheel drive car that is so cheap that you don't worry about thrashing the tits off it. Make all the beginner mistakes that everyone go through. Have it ceremoniously crushed while drinking beer once it is beyond salvage.... THEN it makes sense to start building something "proper".

Wise words there. A good driver in a crap car will almost always beat a crap driver in a good car. Slow, crappy cars make you a better driver in the beginning and less tears are shed when you inevitably lunch it and get intimate with the barrier.
