Is Zach Edey the next Yao Ming?

Спорт

The best player in college basketball isn't always necessarily the best prospect for the NBA. For Zach Edey though, this is the furthest from the truth. Edey has been unbelievable for Purdue this season and his dominance is almost going under the radar in terms of him being a draft prospect. Let me explain to you how good he actually is, and how he might turn out to be the next Yao Ming.

You were saying that Yao and Edey don't take shots outside the paint while showing Yao taking jumpers. Yao took about 30% of his shots for his career outside of 10 feet.

Super underrated because of worries about mobility. I think he has real role player potential where his lack of mobility can be replaced by hustling and being impactful as a scorer, rebounder and rim protector. I'd love for my Celtics to get him mid second round as they need another massive big to rebound, score and defend on that second unit. A 3-2 zone with Porzingis and Edey would be entertaining to watch as well.

Why do people keep comparing Edey to Yao Ming? Is it because they’re both tall, or is it something else? This is so lazy. I watched a one hour highlight reel of Yao to refresh my memory when I started seeing commentators make this comparison. There was not a single jump hook shot in the entire reel, which is Edey’s specialty. Yao did a lot of facing the basket short range jump shots over his opponents. I’ve never seen Edey take a jump shot. He stays with the jump hook almost exclusively when away from the basket. In truth, Edey’s game is much closer to late stage Kareem Abdul-Jabbar than Yao Ming. The tape speaks for itself: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gYiAmsaQZrPXgKg.html

While I think you have a bit of a point, I also think it has more to do with his overall height and relative athleticism for someone of his size. Yao was athletic as hell for 7'6 and the only other player remotely that big right now is Boban. And he is nowhere near as athletic as Edey.

  • @thebigbucktheory5488

It's hard to compare them but I can see some cases. I write a sports blog where I write up prospects and it's hard to find a comparable to Edey. I literally came to this conclusion in watching both of their films. Edey never facing up and shooting, and yao never really backing guys down and just posting up and shooting. I think it may be a coaching thing? Purdue doesn't play any bigs with him and if he posts up and shoots around 10 feet he is out of position to get a rebound and is not really fleet of foot to chase a rebound. He always goes to the hook or back guys down because he's just bigger than everyone, but he is a very good free throw shooter so I think he totally could be a center that doesn't have to rely on backing guys down, and shoot like Yao did. His body size and mass is also much different than yao. This dude is thicker than frozen peanut butter, and this year has shown so much more ability to have more stamina and faster feet. Maybe in the NBA with bigger guys he will be coached to back guys down less and just shoot, with more athletic 4s to slash and get rebounds. I'm with you though.

No way does Edey have the skillset and athleticism of Yao Ming. He's got the size but Yao was phenomenally quick and agile for a 7 foot plus guy, Edey just doesn't have the physical gifts Yao had. Doesn't mean he can't be an NBA players, he won't be fluid like Yao but will be a position scorer and defender and will need a solid team defensive scheme to minimize him getting ISO'd on the perimeter. Should be a solid rim defender and rebounder and if he can develop a mid range game no reason he can't find a role in the NBA.

He'll get a chance in the league, but from watching yesterday, he was way too slow at the end of the game. He was in terrible position when put in the pick and roll and couldn't recover against a team of guys who won't play in the NBA. The only real centers in the NBA are Jokic and Embid and he doesn't have the moves and agility that those guys possess on the offensive end.
