I personally like the manga explanation of it. Ultra Instinct is presented as a "skill up", not a power up. Jiren even gets angry because he realizes that Goku is not actually stronger than him. He's just faster and able to identify and exploit all openings with perfect timing. So, as Master Roshi says, obtaining Ultra Instinct is not about gaining more power (even if the extreme speed of course strenghtens your hits). It is about changing your definition of what power even IS.

My thoughts are that the transformation Goku achieves is a personal one he generated by focusing on the ultra instinct technique itself, it's like saying that the other transformations he knew couldn't cooperate with this technique, while the new one he reached does. Just like kaioken can be added up to his various saiyan and god forms, ultra instinct cannot, until he finds one form that does, and that form is what we see in the omen/imperfect one, and the complete one after he masters the technique. A "vessel form" for the technique, we could define it. So, ultra instinct IS a technique, and that explains why anyone can use it, but in the case of Goku, or maybe the Saiyan race, who knows, it forces the user to find a different transformation, a different state, to be able to use it at its best.

Here’s good evidence that the “art of self movement” is tied to the form of ultra instinct. When Goku had the side affects from SSB KK he wasn’t able to control his body. He was base. It seems power increase and the breaking of limits kind of break the wall of thought when moving.

What if the UI technique requires certain level of power? When Goku tries to reach it, he needs to transform. The spiritbomb increased his power potential allowing him to transform to such level so he can use the UI.

@@DrewskiGaming0 All a transformation means is a sudden change in appearance. Gokus hair changing from black to silver indicates for Saiyans at least it being a form. Plus for Saiyans it could be different then angels and God's. My guess is the hair changing to silver was because for Saiyans ultra instinct causes a mutation. Plus for people saying ultra instinct does not increase power in episode 128 I think when goku bust Jirens gut after going ui omen phase 3 krillian says he did more than just dodge he delivered a power blow to jiren. Plus beerus even calls it a form when he goes complete ultra instinct. Plus Dragon ball is not known for keeping things consistent.

I say its a form for mortals and a technique for gods because mortals have a limit with that limit their bodies can't handle so much at once but the gods have a limit too but it is much higher because they are a higher form of life

Going to watch later, will comment my answer now. It's a highly spiritual technic that in sayians manifest(when mastered) as a kind of Form. I'm guessing it's an on the spot addaption done by gokus body to keep up with the stress build-up and energy consumtion. It may or may not manifest as such in other species. It may even manifest differently.

If your hair color, eye color, aura color, power level, and state of mind change, you've transformed. People argue that Beerus and Whis don't use it as a form, but Whis is probably just permanently in the form, and as for Beerus his eyes turn white in the manga and his hair doesn't turn white because he doesn't have any.

Your 'theory' about ultra instinct being separate from the limit breaking form is pretty cool, and it would be a great way to add ultra instinct as a permenant tool for goku into the anime or manga without making him or the villains too op. Only problem with that is that he's gonna have to fight his enemies while in base because all his other forms, like merus said, are essentially the opposite of UI.

I think it’s kind of both. For the mind it’s the technique of being able to trust your purest instincts and let all other thoughts go and for the body it must take on a form strong enough to carry out movements without any thoughts/impulses. This could explain why with goku his hair changed color whilst beerus and whis don’t appear to have any physical changes. This is just my opinion though

The way I see it, Ultra Instinct is a technique for everyone else (Meerus & Beerus & Whis (Technically a similar version with Roshi)) except Goku because his body is already always relaying on his saiyan genetics, super saiyan forms and zenkai to do whatever he needs to do and although Goku needs to be calm in order to activates it Ultra Instinct is manifesting itself like a transformation because it is a hybrid of all the abilities Goku's body can already do to access that potential on its own. ... Maybe...

Its a technique to the Gods, its a from/transformation to Mortals. Its that simple.

So it is both. This is what I've been thinking myself. Goku's UI being different from the UI that Whis and the G.o.D.s are used to.

Before I watch this, I'm going to say: Whis refers to Super Saiyan as a technique in early episodes of Super. Despite this, we know it's a transformation. In early episodes of Z around the time Goku's returned from King Kai's planet, he explains that Kaioken is technique, yet it's always treated as a form. The long and short of it is: Let's face it. It's both. Now I'm gonna watch the video. EDIT: Now that I've watched it I'd say we're on a very similar wavelength. My theory is that it's not quite Goku that's unique for "transforming" but rather that it's a trait of Saiyan biology to be able to do that under the conditions. Because Saiyans have so many transformations that they're practically coming out of their ears, I'm willing to bet that it's a transformation fuelled by adrenaline that's key to properly utilizing the technique, but this characteristic is ONLY available to Saiyans under conditions that Goku was in due to his state of mind. The very same desperate circumstances and base level of power have not been available to Goku before the Tournament of Power or after it (so far) so his ability to achieve it by accident in the ToP was luck. Interestingly though is that he's training to learn how to do as easily as Super Saiyan or Kaioken in the Moro Arc of the Manga which implies he's working to break down the barrier and master the qualities of using the form and the technique.

I imagined it as a sort of, perfect self. Every part of one's body and energy fields having full and fluid instant access to their limits autonomously. That is kinda what Whis described early on in Super, even explained why Goku seemed to not be conscious the first time he used it. But I'm not sure after multiple uses and it getting stronger even pushing and struggling in it?

The Ultra Instinct is a technique, but Goku seems to only have access to it as a transformation, since he physically changes and has enhancements beyond his fighting prowess. Therefore, to most it is a technique, but to Goku it is both a technique and a transformation.

Hey! Love your vids! How bout a new what if: "What if Goku didn't loose his tail". Sure GT covers some extent of this but what if Goku had it during the events that took place during Dragon Ball Super? It's a neat little twist, no?

Quite sure every race shows this technique in another way. For example: When Gohan's Potential Unleashed ritual was completed and Old Kai told him to release his new awakened power, he did it the same way as he would go Super Saiyan but instead he went powered up in Base. If I remember correctly, even Old Kai was quite shooked that he released it that way.

That was a good breakthrough and the theory will probably be the case.

This is a fairly accurate video considering it was made 4 YEARS ago before even the Moro arc.

Good video man! I think it's both. Ssj is a form, but only saiyans can use the technique of focusing their energy into their back to transform to SSJ. So to me UI is both. One thing I think you left out was Beerus saying Omen Goku pulled off UI before him in the manga. This implies Beerus did not use UI in the GoD Exhibition fight. Other than that fantastic video man!!

Physics makes no sense in Dragon ball. There are plenty of times where fighters get flown back to a wall or whatever and they don't get hurt or they do. Face planting Goku(not suppressed) into concrete or ice and dragging him through the ground or wall apparently hurts him even though he is probably more durable than the earth.

According to wikipedia, a transformation is "The genetic alteration of a cell resulting from the direct uptake and incorporation of exogenous genetic material from its surroundings through the cell membrane." Essentially, a transformation is a sudden alteration of the host's dna that changes the way a cell behaves (At least from my understanding of this defentition). So considering that Ultra instinct makes the host undergo a change in physical appearance, science would argue it's a transformation. Then again, the writers have any and all creative liberty, which im all up for.

Eh I look at it SORTA like the Kaio-Ken in the sense that it is a technique. It's kinda interesting because Kaio-Ken is about learning how to "link" body/mind/spirit in order to utilize it properly but U.I. is about learning to let the body pretty much do its own thing.

I think that way: UI Sign that we see used by Goku in Universe Survival Saga is a technique that all mortals can achieve , this state just grants it's user better perception and makes user's parts of body to move on its own without thinking , for example we have Master Roshi using human version of Ultra Instinct Vs Jiren ( manga only), Also we have the godly version of this technique used by Whis and Beerus ( in manga) , its nothing different than normal UI technique but is avaible only for those who mastered god ki so Goku can use it too. UI as Saiyan transformation from the other hand is exclusive for Saiyans. As I think of it its power of Super Saiyan Blue combined with Super Saiyan 1 and this transformation also grants it's user UI state it doesn't boost stats on its own but breaks the user's barriers and combines his most limit breaking transformations, that could also explain why Goku is nearly dead after long using UI transformation.

I agree it’s a state of being rather than either form or technique is what I would go with. Also, maybe the UI omen being more powerful each time it appears may have to do with all the zenkai boosts Goku is getting throughout the fighting in ToP

I think you really had it with a state. I think its a state of mind, during the fight scene between goku and Jiren before MUI whis said that it allows his body to use 100% of his strength. To explain his form is its simply his body’s response to breaking its set biological limits/having this form allows him to use 100% of his strength without destroying himself

If it’s a technique then that means goku could use god ki to go ssg while in ui or ssb while Ui that would be insanely powerful

It’s a technique similar to how trained fighters have automatic response to a counter their opponent. It’s due to drilling it into their muscles. So when the time comes to use it they unleash it without thinking about.

Both, of course. We have Goku and Moro's Ultra Instinct transformations, and then we have the Ultra Instinct technique which is described as being, "The ultimate technique which severs the link between consciousness and body, allowing one to dodge any attack subconsciously," or at least any attack slower than the Ultra Instinct user.

Super Saiyan -Drastic increase in power (power is increased 50x, or more for the higher forms) -Drastic change in appearance (Hair changes shape and color, blue eyes) -Change in personality (Originally unlocked through extreme anger or trauma, the transformation was usually followed by a shift in personality geared toward rage) -Mastery through continued use (The ki and stamina drain from extended use can be minimized greatly through training by allowing the body to acclimate to the form) Ultra Instinct -Drastic increase in power (Was able to contend and defeat full power Jiren, whereas Blue Kaioken x20 couldn't even scratch suppressed Jiren) -Drastic change in appearance (Hair and eyes turn silver) -Change in personality (Goku became more calm and centered when in this form, just as well, he began to take the fight much more seriously) -Mastery through continued use (It is implied that Goku can be trained to tap into this form at will; in Dragon Ball Heroes, Goku was trained by the Grand Priest well enough the he could access the incomplete form at will)

I really like the idea that the reason Goku initially tapped into the Omen form was because of a fight or flight response from his body. However, I have a slightly different opinion on what happened after that - I like to think that ultra instinct is merely a technique for most beings, but because a unique component within Saiyan biology exists, it causes a transformation to occur as a natural byproduct when a Saiyan uses the technique. It has been stated by Toriyama that the Super Saiyan transformation is intrinsically linked to the number of S cells within a Saiyan, and that they are responsible for the many different transformations that Saiyans can achieve. In training “every part of their body to react on its own”, Goku and Vegeta would actually be training the S cells within their bodies to react on their own too, therefore, the cause for Goku’s transformation and massive power increase when using both Omen and Mastered Ultra Instinct is entirely because the S cells were reacting on their own, rather than reacting TO the flow of Ki as would normally be the case. This theory also provides a solid reason for the Omen transformation being different to the Mastered transformation. In the case of Omen, as Goku had not fully mastered the technique, it could be assumed that not all of the S Cells in his body would be reacting on their own, therefore his subsequent transformation would naturally be left incomplete. Mastering the technique enabled Goku to access the complete transformation.

Before watching the video from my understanding, it’s both, but also not just either of them. Ultra Instinct is not just a form or a technique, but an entire mindset, and even a way of life if you’re at the level of the Angels. Ultra Instinct is a technique, but you need to have a certain type of mindset to actually use it. And if you reach a high enough mastery of ultra instinct it unlocks a new transformation/form. That’s my current understanding. Edit: Ok, I watched the video, and I think I am partially right, but I like your interpretation better. That does make a lot of sense. Ultra Instinct in principle is a technique, and a mindset, but to actually use the technique your own body has to physically be at the level to make the movements with as much speed and power that Ultra Instinct gives you. And if it isn’t at that level and you are able to get into the mindset and pull off the technique anyway, your body will transform on it’s own far surpassing its own limits to utilize the technique. It makes so much sense and I think that’s a Brilliant interpretation, and it also makes the scene of Goku’s body giving out and him almost dying due to the strain and trauma that limit breaking transformation puts on his body so much more sense. My theory is that Saiyan bodies have a special ability which allows them to transform physically to suit the amount of power they need to output. Which leads to things like the Ozaru and super Saiyan forms, but also the increased muscle mass when powering up or even with techniques like the kaio ken. The hair colour seems to change based on the type of power being used. So I'm my mind it's just a trait of the Saiyan race itself. That's why Beerus and Whis look normal while using UI but Goku's body transforms to suit it. Just my 2 cents.

I like to think of it as a mortal’s vain attempt to mimic celestial beings. The white hair signifies a transformation so Goku can handle the power. This is Goku achieving the state of mind of the angels. True UI is the best suited application of this technique for Goku’s mortal body and his primitive approach to UI. (I’m saying it this way because I believe that the gods should have a power that is beyond mortal comprehension. They’re gods for goodness sake.)

My money is on the fact that saiyans bodies adapt to everything they experience. So as Goku uses ultra instinct the easier it will be that he can use it. That being said, it becomes both. Much like his use of SS1 in the Cell saga he will be able to use it constantly because his body will learn to maintain it and allow him to learn how to not only destroy using that energy but create and by that challenge the omnikings. Well this is what I think.. 1. It's a form for a mortal but a technique for the gods, that's why we don't see the aura on Whis or Beerus. 2. It's both a technique and a form. The form, the power up relies on the technique of keeping your mind shut off. Like, if your mind starts thinking about attacking or dodging, the form, the power up goes away.

I know this has nothing to do with the video but my personal opinion is on Ultra Instinct is that, It is a 50 50. And what I mean by that is that it is a Transformation and a Technique at the same time. Why I say this is because that in the anime when Goku transformed the name was also known as Migatte no Gokui. And Gokui is known as Secret Technique. And this form is also called "The Mastery of Self - Movement" And when Goku is in this state he enters a state of Hyper focus. Which is that he focuses on one thing. Jiren. It is also proved because Whis said he was focused on the battle nothing else. But at the same time Goku changed. And Transformed into a Form that makes his movements sharp. And his hair turned into a different color and his Aura Transformed into a different Aura. Different then the regular White Ki. So this is what I think, don't have to agree with me this is just my personal opinion.

This speculation on the ultra Instinct form transformation thingy actually makes a lot of sense. I've heard it be referred to as a technique and transformation from people before but every time I've heard someone say that they never really explained what the hell they were talking about. So it's kind of like the physical change that Ken kaneki undergoes after being tortured by Jason his body become stronger as a response to all the physical pain and stress he has endured only this way it's more of a temporary thing. The only thing I can't figure out about this is if this is the case if this is what his body is doing why have we never seen it before when he was close to dying or whatever else? It seems like if his body was capable of doing this the entire time we would have seen it before now

When goku enters UI it's not just UI. he did a limit break, reconstructed his body, and did gain a new form. But UI is also shown to be a technique that pulls put your power aswell in the manga when the gods dueled each other. We can relate UI to Kioken because theh are both techniques learned from gods. Also the fact that goku can go super saiyan while in this state of UI. Whis was confused about this whole state because it is something new as it's not just UI but it heavily revolves around the UI technique. Throughout his trial and error of UI, goku became both stronger and weaker, noting that if he attacked with a conscious mind his blows were weaker. It took him a huge time to figure out how to attack instead of dodge. Lastly towards the end of the arc much like the fight between vegeta and goku in KK, goku paid the sum for using the technique and collapsed in agony. Unlike KK where his muscle were just super sore and torn, here after using UI all of his cells were burning. We can call this a state of god hood that mortals aren't suppose to possess. Rather than just a form or a technique to avoid confusion and argument. In actually what Goku does is a usage of both.

I think that because of his S cells that are required to go Super Sayain, he may be in a state of mind such as Ultra instinct but it may be viewed as a transformation due to his Sayain cells Indirectly influencing his Ultra Instinct form giving it that same glow, it's probably due to these cells alone that it appears as a transformation for sayains only

It's bad enough that most of the community can't understand UI but can't really blame them, it isn't something simple even for DB terms. And I also get that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and whatnot. BUT saying that goku achieved his limit breaking form due to the fight or flight response could NOT be more wrong. The fight or flight response is the physiological reaction our sympathetic nervous system unconsciously stimulates events like increased heart rate/respiratory rate, constricted blood vessels, increases muscle tension, etc. as well as then inhibits digestion, peeing and so forth, (no reason to list all its duties). With all these things happening and many others, it all produces an increase in reaction time for a few moments. So, its quite easy to connect ACUTE fight or flight responses to Kaioken. Chronic situations are much different, require constant stressors, and ultimately begin to poison your body in return in an awful way. I would prefer to stick with the manga's illustration of UI and ince more than half of your evidence on if UI is a form or technique also came from there, this shouldn't be an issue. Ch. 39 p 22 Tien, Krillin, Whis all commentating on how goku is getting a power up from somewhere, drawing it deep from his reserves. Krillin follows up with, is it the same principle as kaioken. Jiren tells us that gaining power by destroying your body can not be wielded properly and that goku is making the same mistake as Kale. Goku would go on to state these things, "...My heart's as calm as the gentle streams of mount paozu." (ch 41.8) which once more backs up being a complete opposite of fight or flight. and lastly, as I mentioned above fight or flight is an unconscious reaction of our nervous system, right ? Whis ocne more states for us that, "its the ultimate technique, which severs the link between consciousness and the body, allowing one to dodge .... " (ch. 39 p. 40) Consciousness in this case, or rather the lack of it, is referring to the isolation of all the automatic nervous system functions from the body aka thought out actions. I hope all this makes sense as I didn't even go into much of the details ... but for the future, I can gladly help you out or explain real life science topics that you'd want to discuss or on the details that I omitted while writing this comment out.

I completely agree. I like it better like this because in the anime they messed up ultra instinct when jiren powered up and was able to hit goku while he was using ultra instinct.

Going based on what you said I wonder if when Goku fully masters ultra instinct he'll look completely normal and always using it like whis. I also wonder if what I said did happen could he stack super Saiyan blue on top of it.

UI is a technique of the gods... as whis said. I think you're on the right track. But I think the silver haired transformation is Goku's body ascending to a godly level to utilize the technique. Not just a super saiyan god... but on the level of beerus. That way his body can withstand the UI technique. Like Goku had to be strong enough to use kaioken. UI is like the godly version of kaioken... at least that's how it seemed to me

Yeah, we need this transformation for CaCs in XV2. Beast sucks in PvP, unless you are extremely good at blocking and dodging. And this babeh would be a great form for all races. Especially since it's like Kaioken - more of a techique, than transformation, even tho it acts like one.

Its a technique. When he first uses it his hair doesnt change. Its only when he breaks through his limit of power that he can use it well. That in its self tells us that yes Goku has a new transformation, and it is only when he reaches that level of power that he can achieve Ultra instinct. Once he becomes use to that power he will be able to use UI even in his base form.

This is just my theory, but what if it's the same type of deal like with SSB and SSJR, where the body of a mortal can't normally handle it so the body is forced to go into an unnatural transformation in order to contain that power, and once it's over the side effects from using power that mortals aren't normally able to attain, the stress from holding that power causes the damage that we see Goku take because it's too much and he's not meant to have it. I mean even though Beerus has an incomplete version as well and it's more akin to Whis's rather than Goku's.

My way of looking at it is that it’s a form. It isn’t a state of mind but the form requires you to have a certain state of mind to reach that form and deeper you get into the state of mind, the deeper you get into the form. This is why Goku wasn’t immediately in MUI and his UI got stronger as the fight went on and every time he entered it again and by the time he nastered it, he was completely into the state of mind and couldn’t have reached any further which is why it was called MUI. If it was just a technique or state of mind he wouldn’t have ever matched Jiren because Jiren was way faster than him and Goku would’ve still got dominated, like how Sasuke knew what Rock Lee would do when they fought but he was still too fast to do be able to do anything about it.
