IS TOUGH GUY REMPE A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN?

Ойын-сауық

New York Rangers tough guy Matt Rempe has exploded into the NHL with three fights in the span of his first five games. This is a stark change from where the NHL has been going in recent years, and 7-Eleven That's Hockey host Gino Reda wonders if young Rangers forward Rempe is s style is a disaster waiting to happen.

Why does hockey have a fighting culture when other team sports do not? @@jasonlihou5026You dont get it. Hockey and fighting go hand in hand, its one in the same, fighting IS part of the sport. I agree with you that its stupid that guys in gentlemens leagues fight, but this is not rec hockey, its the NHL, this IS their job. This is what puts food on their table, and some guys fight. Some guys never would have had a career in the NHL if not for fighting. You can not like it all you want, but you know whats far more dangerous than a fight?? A hard hit. Would you like to remove hitting too? What does it serve? Why do you need to hit at all?? I thought this was hockey? See what I mean?? Your argument sucks. You suck. It's easy to get caught up in the emotion of watching the game and see the fights he's had, and cheer as the guys are slugging each other, but I still hold my breath anytime I see a guy get taken down like he has in his last two. He's young, he's big, and probably feels indestructible. But knowing what we know now about CTE, seeing the massive impact it's had on the quality of life for enforcers that had to retire early, it's hard not to imagine a worst case scenario for this kid.

    Think about the end game if everyone is tame all the time. I mean in all aspects of life throughout history. Think about where that leads us. Is humanity really doomed to sitting dormant all day with only video games for entertainment as they slowly remove risk from everything in society? I would 100% accept getting punched in the head and suffering as life went on if it meant my family never struggled or went without. Do you think anybody would ever go watch junior hockey if there was no fighting? Hockey on its own is not enough to keep people entertained. Should we also limit race cars to to 40km/hr so they don't crash? People watch racing for crashes, people watch hockey for the chance to see skill and a bit of violence. Not every team has a superstar, which means they need other ways to fill the house.

    We don't know much about CTE. For all we know, you may be born with CTE and are more suceptible to concussions as a result. If you only cut open the brains of people with dementia, than you won't know what causes the dementia. But it seems many people who did not play professional sports and did not get numerous concussions get dementia.

If you believe the league cares, I have some property in the mud flats you may want. I've seen players get drilled head first into the boards, and only a minor penalty called. The NHL Pretends to care, but like our government, the only thing they care about is their pocket books and their positions of power. I hope this Rempe kid doesn't pay a horrible price.

    Guys before him have fought a lot more. This chicken little "2 inches away" didnt happen to ANY of the guys he fought and whether guys at TSN want to admit it or not, its NOT the refs job to prevent fights. The players overwhelmingly want the right to self police. Whether this is a spur of the moment fight or a staged fight they dont care. If a coach at home sees rempke on the ice and sends his toughie to line up against them, you can't feign surprise when they go. I would hope the kid fights less, but that's up to him to decide.

    yes, i like to watch the fights overall. But the reality is that 3 fights in 5 games is not a great trend. Especially since he almost struck his head twice. There is a correlation between blows to the head and CTE. And having a tough guy on the ice does not deter the stars from getting hurt. Bedard still had his jaw broken, makar still got 2 concussions in 2 weeks. Its time for the head coach to step in and tell him to take it down a notch on the pre-planned fights.

    Actually he is an adult man, fully capable of making any decision he feels is best for his own life. No one is holding a gun to his head or forcing him to play. Don’t want to fight then don’t, his choice not yours. Want to fight? Then fight, and live with the consequences and or benefits of again… his choice/decision. The game is probably the ultimate blend of speed, skill, hitting, toughness , and even violence. “Toning down” any one of those aspects would greatly take away what makes this game so great. I do not want to go to a game and witness a glorified “skills competition” (like at the All-Star Game).

    Great video, and thanks for highlighting the nuance of the situation... one point not emphasized enough that hit me immediately (and I would love to hear Gino's thoughts or others) was how both Deslauriers and Olivier (veteran/older players) deliberately throw Rempe on his back, bringing his head dangerously close to the ice. Deslauriers actually grabs the back of his leg in order to throw him off balance, it was clearly intentional...and Olivier must've taken note because he throws Rempe off balance to end the fight too. In my opinion, these older guys were extremely reckless and put Rempe in greater danger than he otherwise would have been. And I get that amidst the adrenaline it is probably hard to not end a fight any way you can when you're getting beat/tired, but the older guys gotta show more control and awareness (IMHO)

How about be a human being, a man, a mentor and skate up to the kid in warmups and tell him "I'm not fighting you tonight. You need to slow down or you're going to get yourself killed". Going up to this kid and challenging him to fight is selfish, only benefiting Reeves so maybe he can stick around the NHL for another year.

  • @richcree3034
    @richcree30342 ай бұрын

    Geno, you think the refs can just step in and say "not tonight?" I think you are delusional here. They can't police every inch of ice and stop everything from happening. The rules still allow fighting. Your point about his overexuberance and the dangers of him falling and fairing badly in a fight are valid, even though your comment about him not fairing well against Deslauriers is just simply not true. It was in his third fight that he faired poorly. You are right about his coach though. He can police him and should be telling him to pick his spots and protect himself better.

    I sit up as much as anyone when there is a fight, but let's be honest about what we're cheering for. The game has increased penalties and changed protocols to protect players' safety, especially in relation to head injuries, yet we still allow, and glorify fighting, which is essentially about deliberately trying to injure your opponent's head. We know that enforcers pay a heavy price for their role. The average enforcer dies 10 years sooner than the average player, often tragically. I met Bob Probert shortly after he retired. A super nice guy, but you could also tell, not a very happy guy. One of many we lost too soon.

    Great commentary and the very same thing I thought when this kid emerged on the scene. It's one thing to have a brief good tilt between to equal opponents but throw in these aging tough guys hell bent on prolonging a paycheck with an inexperienced behemoth of a tough young kid trying to stay up with the big club and there definitely is chance for disaster. Its bad enough taking somebody and body slamming them onto the ice (not a surface intended for fight sports) especially helmetless. I am shocked hockey at the NHL, AHL, and ECHL levels havent jumped on that because God forbid tragedy will strike. When that does happen the consequences for those involved will be disastrous. Again, all for a good bout and the intense physicality of the game but not acts teetering on the brink of disaster for the league, the teams, the players, and lastly the game and its reputation. Not even 20 years ago this is how guys on both ends of their on ice careers had to "earn" their jobs and I am okay with that but its the tossing of one to the ice a near tragedy that the game can do without. The league, the coaches, and the players should be more mindful. I dont want to see this young kid's career cut short nor do I want to see a 30 or 40 something's career and post hockey employability come to an abrupt end due to a tragic event.

    when the players fall it does look very dangerous but i think the reason why they dont hit their head is because of their shoulder pads. it gives just enough gap where unless you're knocked out just tucking your head in a bit is enough to not hit the ice. As for Rempe i think he's following the Tom Wilson model. Tom fought his way onto the caps, and is now a core figure and future Captain. I remember the early days of Tom, he had pretty much the same story as Rempe. He was fighting all the time his rookie year and then showed people he has skill and then he said how at some point he realized he didn't have to fight everyone. Like he had a choice. Took him like 2-3 years to figure that out though haha. I just read an article with Rempe mentioning he was a big fan of Wilson
