There is NO NEED in the NHL for this garbage

Спорт

Last night as the Seattle Kraken came into Saddledome to face the Calgary Flames, we had a chippy game to say the least. What’s going to have everyone talking though, was Martin Pospisil. He laid two brutal hits sending guys head first into the boards. First on Larson and later in the game on Vince Dunn. Now I know Pospisil is a player you like to have. I saw that as a Penguins fan the other night where he had 9 hits that game. He is great at being that annoying guy to play against similar to a guy like Brad Marchand. But if that is your game, you’re gonna be expected to answer the bell because the league takes notice and yet, he has said he’s not willing to fight. He’s had 6 concussions so he’s not gonna fight which is pretty clear by the way he turtles when challenged. While plenty happened during the game, we also got a funny moment after the whistle when Confetti came flying down at one point after the puck hit the scoreboard. I cover that and everything else in todays NHL hockey video!

When I played highschool hockey, fighting was not allowed. It was not only a suspension from hockey but also a school suspension. Can you please explain for the whole world the difference between 'dangerous' hits and illegal hits? The rule book clearly specifies what constitutes the latter...but the former seems to be entirely subjective (this comments section is Exhibit A), and is only results-driven at best. Giving credence to that would be akin to encouraging hockey players to take Neymar-like swan-dives. Frankly, I'm delighted that NHL is about the only professional sports league that identifies and penalizes divers.

Completely agree with the answering the call discussion. HOWEVER. NHL players have got WAY to used to standing in the "dangerous" spots on the iced, un-touched. If you're going to stand a foot away from the boards, with your back to the play, you need to be ready. Hit is GARBAGE either way. But I do think players need to be more mindful of the position they're putting themselves in. A suspension is 100% needed, and I'm sure the $5000 "maximum allowable" fine is coming. (Fine is garbage btw... These guys make 775K at the low end.)

I would never expect a hard bodychecker to fight to defend a good hard "clean" bodycheck. However... he needs to look in the mirror. It looked like he was getting payback for his own past concussions the way he was recklessly hitting players. He might not want to change his game if that's what got him to the NHL, but it will also force him to retire early if players go after him and he gets more concussions. He needs to play a game that doesn't make him a hypocrite. Both hits made my symptoms spike just watching them. He should be setting an example with the injury trouble he has, not being his own worst enemy.

If we look at these 2 Pospisil hits Objectively, not allowing our emotions to affect our thinking, the first hit on Larson is Objectively clean & fair. The second hit on Dunn was Objectively boarding, definitely a major, and that's that. All the commentary from people about "running around" is a whole lot of emotional projection.

"I want to lay dirty hits but I don't want to fight because I don't want a concussion" is the definition of "can dish it out but can't take it." Don't want to potentially get a concussion? Then don't give other players concussions. If you lay dirty hits and injure players, you're gonna have to answer the bell, and whether you drop the gloves or not you're getting punched in the face. Players like him are the bane of this league. If you want to ring guy's bells, be ready to answer the bell.

You're deluded if you don't realize that the coach, the Flames and the league are part of the reason as to why he's laying those hits or why there are "dirty" players. Most dirty players are only dirty because that is what they get paid for and would rather not be dirty if that wasn't the case. One season I played with the guy who had the most boarding penalties in the WHL. He got a stern talking to from our coach about not playing physical enough and was put on the bench. He was like "it's not like you get amazing opportunities to lay guys out with clean hits every game". Once he started hitting people from behind he was back in the lineup and eventually got drafted. I also received a stern talking to that year for not taking enough fights. I also was drafted as a tough player but thing is that coach wanted us to be dirty in addition to tough.

This role goes both ways, and you better believe the other teams big guy was stepping on the ice every time I got on once they clued in.. and almost always ends in a fight after a few shifts of a couple big hits. You take the fight, take the break, and then chill out a bit after hyping up your team. This guy shouldn’t be playing that way if he can’t take it back… but, unfortunately, that’s likely the only reason he’s still in the NHL, and has to keep playing like that while trying to save himself from a SEVENTH! Head down, knees straight, bent at the hips, and facing the boards with the puck is just putting yourself in a dangerous situation. I'd like to see some sort of two way penalty. ex: Puck goes to corner, player A goes to get puck with head down facing the boards, player B is rails player A into the boards. Player B gets 5 minutes, and Player A gets 2 minutes for "dangerous play", "failure to protect themselves". I'm not sure how to word the naming or even if its a good idea but it sure is an idea.

As for Dunk, I don't think he exposes himself to vulnerability. There is no reason for him to be close to the board to better prepare for a hit. He is a puck carrier yes, and has the position since no Cal player is close. Other players are marked, hence he plays with his back to the goal. By doing so, he creates space for himself by covering the puck and the exits (left & right) he can use when someone attacks him. The muppet comes up from behind and runs him over, and Dunk sees him because he doesn't look down. Dunk is aware of what he is doing because he is making an offensive move and he is paying for it because the Zebras are a JOKE in this league. I call this two dangerous hits which hopefully ends happily with both Kraken players.

This scenario is such a simple one. It weighs 70% on the NHL to enforce stricter penalties for players doing this stuff suspend them multiple games for each case (I.E 2 separate potential suspensions in that game). The other 30% lies in the NHLPA to stop appealing this crap. If not, all that will result is retaliation. Whether they go directly after posposil and give him an eye for an eye, or go after his teammates as a response. I think this sort of childish retaliation is what we should be trying to get rid of though. And yes - everyone will say 'but thats the NHLPA job' and that of course they're going to appeal the suspension, they represent the players.. but why? They also represent the players on the other end, being shoved head first into the boards.

I get that the NHL is a heck of a lot different than my beer league, but if one of my teammates lays a hit like those - nothing questionable about it, intent to injure - I'd have a lot of trouble coming to his defense. I might actually prefer it if he took a few shots before everyone ties up because he'd deserve it. I know we all throw that excuse "well, you'd like him if he were on your team" but I really don't feel that way. With so much more deserving talent waiting for a chance, it's hard not to hope a guy like this never plays a game in the NHL unless he gets his act together, and fast. Both of those hits in another version of this game could've been career ending injuries, we just got lucky this time.

5:29 I think you're kind of missing half the story here as well.. This is now not 'a bad position', my theory is it's now considered a 'safe' position mentally in these players heads. Why? Since now it is against the rules to hit someone in this position, if they do would be heavily penalized with further suspensions on top. So their only option to play the guy is to slow themselves down and push them up against the boards and force a board battle. Sure it may not be the best play for the puck carrier, but I think this 4-5 feet away from the board position is being used intentionally now. They don't want to get too close to the boards so they can't be hit legally, and they don't want to be too far from the boards so the hit will be open ice and not result in head into boards. It's a very risky thing to do.. given people like pospisil willing to through the rules to the wind. I think this is also why we are suddenly seeing so much of this exactly as they are trying to 'get it out of the game'. Players are using this position more than ever now, given the defender the bad option of taking longer to slow themselves before engaging, or attempting to come around the side which would probably result in getting dangled. Or the other option of just saying 'f it' and going all in on the hit and taking the penalty and possible suspension. Edit: just to note - I missed you mention '2 feet' in the video. This could have just been a mistake, but i mean, it's pretty clearly further then 2 feet. I feel i may be even underestimating with the 4-5 feet

First hit: 100% boarding call - no need to leave your feet following through on a hit like that. Second hit: Inexcusable at any level of hockey. This should be a 3 game suspension, Dunn was literally in a position where he could have been paralyzed.

Never stop motion in NHL. I don't know, what those two players were thinking, but if you turn your back, stop completely, you are in charge for the tackle coming up. Nothing wrong here by Pospisil, always take time and room away from other player. Disgusting, how people missuse the situation by turning their back. They might still think, that nobody will hit them, but it is wrong

If the puck hits the scoreboard it's supposed to be a 2 minute Delay of Game penalty. Players aiming for the scoreboard just to get a stoppage in play was the whole reason they added all those delay of game rules, like Puck Over the Glass. They missed that call in the first Dallas Vs Nashville game this season: you know, the one where Josi also gloved the puck in the crease, which should've resulted in a Stars penalty shot or two minute minor. The refs ignored those calls in an attempt to help Nashville win, but the Stars whooped em anyway with 2.9 seconds left.
