After much deliberation I went for the Sony 14mm f1.8 GM prime. It is just that bit faster and lighter and smaller. It is a little sharper corner to corner too from the tests I have seen. My copy is in the post now, but when testing in the shop on my own camera I loved it, and felt that toggling between crop mode using my custom button enabled me to punch in a little providing a little step between 14mm and my 24-70 Sigma. These lenses are so good, I think it is just a case of considering the features that are most important to you personally.

I have it for my S52 L mount which crops to apsc for 4k60 and also crops 1.4x for the magical High IBIS setting. With full frame standard ibis, I get a great ultra-wide lens and still have a wide lens when in HIGH ibis and or 4k60. I shoot indoors and at least one area I shoot in is small so I always have some kind of wide lens on my cameras. This is a great lens. It reminds me f the Sigma 1-35 Art lens I used to use on my 70D years ago.

Circular polarizers are a must for me, which is why I’m going for the Loawa 15mm zero-d. I love sigma lenses though so maybe I’ll pick one up in a year or so
I have this lens for my Nikon. A beautiful high quality lens that produces amazing images, love it.

Greetings from Italy, I just have bought this lens, needs to test it, sorry about what happened, does it happens frequently? I follow LTVL (Van Life) and he is up there in his videos and talks about that place as truly wilderness.
Sorry to hear about your car! Debating on getting this lens eventually for a wide zoom. It would work well for photos and in sync with the 24-70 from sigma. The weird filter solutions worry me though. I'm not sure yet if I will want to use polarizers for landscapes, but Nisi sells them for a whopping $350 CAD and Im not sure if that includes the filter itself. (which is way more than just a regular circular polarizer alone) "luckily" me not doing video means I won't often need an ND filter... (Hopefully)
@TheOtherSamMallory
3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a great lens and that whopping $350 is painful to put a polarizer on it! For photos, the rear-ND is actually quite nice simply because of the cost savings. You still have the issue of needing to take the lens off to put an ND on but if you are using an ND for long-exposure photography you probably are moving at a slower pace regardless. For video I am always moving at a quick pace, constantly needing to make small adjustments to my exposure, so the fixed rear-ND is far worse than a variable, front ND.

@@TheOtherSamMallory So with the 14mm GM announced, have you made a decision? That doesn't accept filters either. Stumbled on your video again since I'm still considering this lens, haha
@TheOtherSamMallory

@@MatchuCT I know... Sony is trolling me by only giving me half of what I would have wanted! The lack of simple front filters is a bummer and Sony' rear-filter system seems a bit more clunky than Sigma's. I think I am going to go for the Sony, the price point is just about right and I rarely zoom in on a lens like this! The fast aperture and form factor sells me over the Sigma The Sigma is great though, especially if you want the zoom range and can live with f/2.8 aperture. Are you still leaning towards the Sigma?
Hi Sam! Do you think that 16-35 mm GM would be greater than 14-24 sigma? does that 2 mm difference on the wider end makes too much difference?
@TheOtherSamMallory
3 жыл бұрын
The 2mm makes a surprising difference (114° diagonal angle of view vs. 106°) but the key for me was actually the pricing difference $1,400 vs. $2,100. I haven’t used the GM but have heard great things!

Awesome review. Amazing photos. That's crazy that you can go to a magnificent place like that and get your car window smashed and broken into.
What are your thoughts on the new Sony 14mm 1.8? Any chance of a review in the future? Or is the beer belly an absolute deal breaker?
@TheOtherSamMallory
3 жыл бұрын
I think it has some benefits over the Sigma (size and weight of course, hopefully image quality) and some drawbacks… the rear ND mechanism seems much worse on the Sony since it can’t be ‘locked’ in place. The ‘beer belly’ is a bummer but I’ll have to test it out and see!
Ah man, sorry about your gear. Love my Sigma 14-24 DG DN. It may be possible that your copy had something sharp/rough inside the lens cap somewhere, as the outside of my lens where the hood slides on is still completely mint (and has been used heavily for over a year).
@TheOtherSamMallory
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and empathy, Tim! And excellent feedback on the lens cap issue... I think you are probably spot on that I had something rough inside the lens cap that was scratching the hood constantly. Great to hear yours is still mint and (with probably a bit more attention than I gave) can remain that way!
I looove your color grading can you do tutorial for this ♥️🙏

It’s a great lens! Using a drop-in filter adapter would solve my big complaint for video use so I think you can’t go too wrong!
Getting your car broken into sucks man. Good points on the lens though, considering it for my a7iii as the sony wide angle zooms are a bit too expensive for me at the moment. It would be cool if there was a drop in filter adapter similar to the canon ef-rf mount one but I guess maybe wouldn't work properly with the distance to the sensor the lenses need. Having one adapter and one range of filters for all your lenses would be great.
@TheOtherSamMallory

I fully agree! A drop in filter system would be awesome, I guess there are the matte box style drop in filters but I like the idea of the small of adapter.
Thanks 🙏
Ugh, you don't need a fast prime to shoot astro. I've actually been stopping my 12mm f2 down to f4 to get less coma in the corners and I always stack my shots, tracked or untracked so it really doesn't matter what aperture I'm shooting at. I also shoot relatively low ISO, like 800 to 1600. I'm actually getting this lens this month because for my flexibility in composition is more important than speed. Does a skinny strip of Milky Way work better with a composition or a fatter more detailed one. Again, IMHO more important than speed and also I don't have to lug around a bag of primes everywhere I go.
@TheOtherSamMallory
2 жыл бұрын
Fully agreed you don't need a fast prime, it's a great point! Typically I prefer one simply for the performance stopped down (generally speaking a fast prime will perform better stopped down than a slower zoom at the same aperture -- but that's splitting hairs in lots of cases). Did you get the lens? Do you like it?
can you compare this lens (when you somehow got it back) with the Sigma 14mm F1.8 Emount ?
@TheOtherSamMallory

If I buy another copy - and get my hands on the 14mm f1.8 - I will, but that’s a lot of “ifs”. I hear that the 1.8 is stellar but it is big and heavy since its a DSLR designed lens!

Rumor of a fast ultrawide prime from whom, sony... sigma? I'm currently debating about getting this 14-24, but I value portability almost as much as getting the widest angle possible (and f2.8 at least) and although it certainly doesn't seem to be TOO big and heavy... I was wondering if maybe a smaller/lighter fast wide prime was on the horizon, or perhaps a new sigma wide-angle zoom from their contemporary line (although they probably won't be able to get too wide with that one, and I fear it would end up being something like a 17-28mm).
@TheOtherSamMallory

Rumors of a new fast, prime, ultra wide lens from Sony! Originally I was hearing of a 16mm f/1.8 that was going to be announced last November but it sounds like the rumors have now shifted to 14mm f/1.8 that will be announced “soon”. I would probably prefer something like a new Sigma prime (for cost) but am sure the Sony will be excellent.
And Sweet colorgrading
I'm currently shooting Canon, so I needed a wide angle lens for my business, real estate photograph. I tried the Canon 16-35 f/4. I sent it back, it was not sharp enough and the color renditions were off, too much time in post to fix. So I bought the Sigma 14-24 f/2.8. I am completely satisfied with he quality of photos I'm getting (most of my work is f/7.1 - f/9) and the performance of the lens. Thanks for sharing, and sorry to hear about the theft!
@TheOtherSamMallory
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! That’s quite interesting you found the Canon colors off a bit and the Sigma was noticeably better. I have no experience with the Canon f/4 but am generally comfortable with “L” series colors... maybe the f/4 just doesn’t keep up!
Now that you know the new ultra wide lens from Sony is none other than the GM 14mm f1.8, what say you between these two lenses?

@TheOtherSamMallory

I haven’t used the Sigma 14mm but it’s a monster compared to the 14-24mm! Everything I have heard is that its a better lens at 14mm but obviously doesn’t zoom… that being said, Sony’s new 14mm f/1.8 would probably be a better option than the Sigma 14mm. They are the same price and the Sony is significantly smaller and lighter.

We will have to see what comes out! I would like an ultrawide angle prime with a fast aperture (faster than f/2.8) that accepts front filters easily. There are rumors of a Sony GM 16mm... so if it's reasonably priced, I might grab it.

Thanks for sharing but I'm sorry for what happened to your car and the gears. My intuition is people who spend the night in the wilderness are inherently good people and I too would have left my gears to keep them dry rather than risk getting them flooded in a heavy downpour if I'm spending overnight in a tent.
