I don't think it's offensive on purpose, but I get the same vibe as that one soccer mom bumper sticker that says 'COEXIST' and every letter is a different religious symbol. It being so optimistic and genuine is kinda charming along side being so silly. Edit: Are... are the enemies of the series personifications of conspiracy theories? Reptilians, generalized Evil scientists?

While I was at College they had a group that got multiple people from different religions together to talk about differences, hates, misconceptions, etc it mostly focused around Abrahamic faith and called themselves the Children of Abraham. It was extremely respectful and amazing learning experience there was some really awful people who joined to try and be angry at Jewish or Muslim fate but they were like very far between each other like maybe 1-2 a year. They also had great food, which probably while it was Extremely popular with broke college students.

Firstly, I think "God Squad" would be a better name, it kinda rhymes that way. If this project picks up steam, I hope that the scientists don't stay villains. I think that if you're going to make a show where the premise is that people of different faiths can get along despite their differences, pointing out a particular group (possibly atheists in this case, idk I'm speaking hypothetically) as the bad guys kinda sours the message. Like, if the show wants to fight hate, it needs to be really careful about its villains to make sure it isn't reinforcing any biases the team might have. Im not saying that the creators are doing this in bad faith; I'm just saying that for the show to actually follow its premise, it needs to be very nuanced and as unbiased as possible.

If anything, I think it would be better if they made the villains be groups of religious extremists who hate seeing people of different religions getting along and come up with different plans in each episode to sabotage things and make it seem like it was the fault of another religion, manipulating people into hating each other. Maybe they even try manipulating the members of God’s gang into turning against each other, until they realize what’s happening and work together to stop the extremist villains. Doing this would teach kids that, in the real world, it’s not easy to understand other people with different beliefs/cultures and that as a result, prejudice can stem from it. That’s why it’s important to respect people and their religions despite their differences if we truly wish to live together peacefully. It’s a lot better than having the atheist villains give off the impression of slandering people who simply choose not to follow any religious faiths.

I think my only gripe here is the seemingly lack of effort with everyone except Chris Cross's design. the other three just look like fairly generic idea of practitioners of their respective religions while Chris Cross's design gets to draw inspiration from 1970s blaxploitation genre (which is a very cool idea! this isn't me ragging on that concept). I kind wish the other characters had something like that. maybe base each character after a different kind of action star, kung-fu cinema, Spy thrillers, Bollywood, idk literally anything.

The idea of showing various religions from the world working together and seeing the good messages that each culture has to tell, is actually a very nice idea. Not gonna lie. I think each religion (and even ancient mythologies) do have some truth to them. Unfortunately, we know the turmoil that religious extremism and differences have caused over the years (I mean, Jesus wanted us to spread love and compassion in his name and several organizations ended up doing the opossite thing)

Totally agree. People follow religions because of their positive messages and I think every one that's existed has something deeply human and respectable about it, even if many have...other less then steller ideas nested inside as well. What's most important is treating everyone with respect and love and understanding. Whatever they believe, they are human too. That as a basic thought...needs to be promoted. But a lot of people get into hate circle jerks. They hate me, I'll hate them back kind of stuff. Or just misguided stuff getting repeated instead of truth (and people not listening long enough to find it.) I think Saber has a point. People are negative on the internet. We need to, as individuals, feed the ideas we want to live with, not the ones that drag us and others down, like cynicism and aggression.

I think that if the show went in depth about the cultures, practices, and history behind each character's religion and had some representation from other religions, the show would be really cool! Plus, the fact that the show isn't just about representation of cultures, but depicting and encouraging solidarity between them, is really powerful and is a really important message that the world needs now more than ever. Could a show save the world? Maybe not. But I think we need more shows that focus on "We're different, but our similarities and our cooperation is more important".

I don't think it's meant to be OFFENSIVE. I think it was a well meaning, yet naive attempt at showing inter-faith solidarity. I think the creator wanted to find what these religions all have in common, as opposed to their differences. But as a result, it overlooks the complexities and fascinating cultural differences that make these religions unique. In it's place, he fell back on general superhero tropes and also some more superficial ways to differentiate the cast.

Pretty cool concept, but definitely could use some work, especially on clearly defining the age demographic they're actually aiming for. It could be a good tool to teach religious tolerance and comprehension in a fun way to children just as much as it could be an interfaith satire that would probably belong in adult swim, depending on the direction it is taken from now on. I personally prefer the first option (I think we already have enough religious satire), and honestly I would love to watch and comment something like this with my nieces (they're Muslim, I'm Catholic).

@@GodsGangGo That's good to know, I think that's a better age target than 6-13. I'm genuinely interested in your project, to be honest, so I'll be sure to follow up on your progress. As I said, I think it could become a good tool to promote religious tolerance, especially within interfaith communities. By the way, I don't know if that was just the concept for your pilot or something that you're planning to keep as a general plot point across the series, but I would like it if we could also have good (religious) scientist characters instead of scientists regularly being the villains. I feel that otherwise it could accidentally end up promoting anti-intellectualism and reinforcing the unhealthy skepticism that is already a problem within a lot of religious communities. I myself am a physicist and a Catholic and I know lots of other religious researchers, at least within my field, for example. I found Chris Cross lovely, by the way. It's a fresh take that better reflects the diversity of Christians beyond just WASPs, and I like that. Please keep it up, and don't be discouraged by the people finding it ridiculous!

Ehh... Hindu theology is complex and varied, but most of the larger school of Hinduism belive that there is one underlying "god" and that all the gods are different forms/eminations/facets of that one. Depending on the tradition or the individual beliver it can be very literal, as in they are all individual "persons" with one underlying reality (more like the Christian Trinity), or more abstract, as in different gods are just ways for people to compartmentalize the wast underlying divine in a way that they can understand and relate to. So many Hindus, especially in majority Christian and Muslim areas will say they belive in God, or "one god", or the same God as those monotheist religions do, just with a very different view on it. And if Christians get the "one god" pass despite the Trinity I don't see why Hindus can't as well if they want.

Hinduism has Brahman, which is the Ultimate Principle of all that is. Brahman is unchanging, but through it's influence all else can be changed. It binds all diversity in unity. That sounds like a dead-ringer for a supreme creating force when comparing it to other religions. And while the other three religions have YHWY(Yahwey)/Allah/God, I can see how the creators would include Hindu representation with such an entity/concept in its cosmology. That being said, Brahman is indifferent, creating merely because it is compelled to.

What if the show portrayed how the religions are different in practice? Maybe the Muslim character takes out a prayer mat periodically, maybe the Christian character goes to church on Sundays, maybe the Hindu character offers to a murti, etc. and then the other characters respond with, "oh hey, that's cool." Having characters respond to radically different beliefs and practices would actually be a poignant message. If you're going to go there, then go there!

My big concern is how this show is going to treat some of the villains of this show. Not because they are villains, but because of the context behind some of the villains they plan to show need to be handled with immense care. Looking on their website they plan to have villains that are a parody on the KKK (the show calls them the TTT) with the removal of the religious background behind it and saying they are just "karens in a pink hood." As a history teacher, it feels disingenuous when the show is about how Abrahamic religion can coexist with each other, but then make evil characters who has some ties to certain beliefs that caused some really horrible events in history.

  • @sheller153

I think it’d be good if they didn’t remove the original religious backing of the different enemies, and portrayed it as a younger, less tainted practitioner of the faith and their friends fighting against a decades old barbarism that’s clinging onto their faith, treat it like it’s something we need to move past, but not forget. They’re something the characters have to say “no! We can be better than that!” to.

Yeah. This whole thing strikes me as well-intentioned and sincere, but also rather tone deaf and naive. As Saberspark mentions, it has an intended audience issue, but I think that intended audience issue runs deep in the writing and prevents them from finding a balance between tackling the real issues and making it palatable, and so the end result is bland and ineffective. If they can't show and tackle the flaws within the religions covered, then the whole thing feels more like whitewashing over the deep seated issues.

From a Christian point of view, I think this show is innocent, and a rather fun attempt into the world of "religious media". I know dang well that there's a lot of media in the Christian world, whether it's shows, cartoons, movies, and songs, that are outright horrible. So I find this new addition to be one of the more entertaining, bearable, and fun ones to become part of this category. I can't speak for any other religion, but I find this to be just a innocent attempt. I think it could be better certainly, in a lot of ways, but yeah. I, also from another Christian view, am very pleased with the Christian character in the group. I like the hip funky Black guy, instead of the rather perceived "persona" of what a Christian would look like, like a white man with short hair in a polo shirt. It's very refreshing to see the character played from a different person, like a gospel hall vibe instead of protestant, which is no shame to protestants of course, just not every Christian is that. I think this show is pretty neat, but I also know I'm a really lax person about this kinda stuff, so I think it's pretty neat, but I don't think most will. Probably think it's too "silly".

It sounds like you can’t really find a major issue with the show. The issue here seems like “this shouldn’t exist because we live in a world where these religions don’t collide in a good way. So it doesn’t sit right.” However, It doesn’t poke fun of the religions. It celebrates them. The show was made with good intention and it turns out to be around “mid to good”. Thats…. almost a miracle! Coming up with a good show is hard enough, let alone a religious one! Lol I think we should celebrate and support this show. If anything, we need it during these times!

It almost seems like he really wanted to find something negative to this show, but when he couldn't, it's written off as "tone deaf" and "off". I don't like that. You know what - I want this to work. The world could use some unironic wholesomeness. My only thought is that a) have the scripts run though some consultants from the faiths, sensitivity readers b) don't make the villians "anti-religious" people and scientists, since there are devoted people in science and it would muddy the message of unity between different beliefs to make the world better. There are enough things that can be villianized - bullying, exploitation, pollution, substance abuse, etc. I'd also aim at the 8-11 demographic, but the writing could be clever so it's not too blunt. It's of course hard to imagine this flying with someone like conservative evangelicals, but if we canceled every show that doesn't fly with them.... Besides there are interfaith families. The key here is sensitivity readers from different backgrounds. I'd also drop the halo and wings on Dogma's design, since they are christian shorthand iconography and maybe give her a glow or radiance instead to imply her nature more neutrally. This is the stuff you need people of different backgrounds to chime in in the production.

@@maelofohio6682 it's definitely not, sikh scriptures are more so an amalgamation of hindu and Islamic texts. Oh and they say all paths to God are somehow correct, something most religions would very much disagree with.

ngl would love to see something like this but make it more power ranger and the irl of the characters’ lives is dealing with the personal/religious parts (and make it so there is more than just the mono religions, lets get some celtic pagans in there, the chinese gods, etc.). it’s an interesting idea but if there is going to be a coexist show i’d love to see more than just the ones that believe in God, I want a full coexist. (and not have bad pun names from another culture)
