Is this Minecraft?

Ойындар

This isn't Minecraft. It's Hytale.
Just kidding. Today I am playing the open source Minecraft, Minetest. It features a lot of the core mechanics of Minecraft with some interesting changes. For example the best place to find Minecraft diamonds is normally -64, where as in Minetest the diamonds don't start until -1024! It also has a mod called Mesecons which adds the ability to use 'redstone', although it functions very differently. This Minecraft clone gave me serious Minecraft nostalgia.

MINETEST! www.minetest.net/ Thanks for your patience on the new vids! I dedicated myself to solving my pop/crackle audio issues that have persisted for years (and multiple PCs and operating systems!). Using a custom output on OBS worked, but it lead to some horrible issues where 3-4 seconds would be cut off the end of each clip... a nightmare for someone who records in 3-4 second clips 😭

MINETEST!!!!! Oh my gosh I never expected you to cover this game!!! I'm really into Minetest as I really love open source software. It's really cool to see it get more exposure from a KZreadr as big as you! The project is still pretty small without a lot of developers, but it really has so much potential and I hope more people get into it! Something to clarify: "Minetest" isn't actually a game. It's kind of confusing right now, but Minetest is actually a voxel-based engine. Minecraft-like games have been made for it, obviously- and the default game, "Minetest Game", is one of them, but an even better one is actually MineClone2, which you can find on the content database. It gets as close as possible to Minecraft. It's a lot... jankier, than Minecraft, to be fair, but it does have the Ender Dragon fight and everything iirc and is compeltely playable. Also, I really like playing Minetest games because if there's ever a problem with it I don't like, like a block that's annoying difficult to break I can literally just go into the game files and just change a few numbers around in any text editor. Anyone can mod their games and add on new things very, very easily compared to Minecraft. ALSO also also (I keep editing this with new things to say lol) shoutout to Wuzzy, a community member who made a really well-done platformer with the engine for last year's game jam. Not just Minecraft games can be made with Minetest; there's a lot one can do with it ^_^ !

Mumbo! One really cool thing is that Minetest's modding capabilities are extremely integrated. Essentially, all mods are run server-side with no mod installation on the client, so there's no need to send modpacks around! All you need to do is join the server, and all the necessary mods will just work. I'd heavily suggest looking into them if there will be a "Hermittest" mini series since they can add anything from mobs, to achievements, to minecraft-like gameplay, to teleporters and trains!

I've been dying to see big Minecraft KZreadr such as yourself covering Minetest. Glad you enjoyed playing it! I really want to see this game going mainstream, because IMO Minecraft is getting boring and very bloated (I have to install performance mods just to play it). Also, because if more people play it then more devs/modder will join the community and the overall quality of the game/engine increases. The fact that it's free will save so many parents money and decrease the act of pirating Minecraft.

Another thing I'd like to add is that Minetest engine is arguably much better than Minecraft. It is written in C++ so it's going to be much faster than Java, and I don't think Mojang will fix Java Minecraft performance problems at this point. It has a modding API built in, with mods manager/downloader right inside the game, so you don't need to mess with a custom launcher. I also feel that mods don't weigh down the game as much as they do in Minecraft. There's also built in shader now which is amazing.

The strength of Minetest is how easy it is to mod. This is because they expect you to mod it. It is more of a voxel game engine than a game by itself. There is even a whole modpack out there to turn it into a pretty decent Minecraft clone! I hope to see some more of this sometimes :)

Minetest is a game engine in which you can build your own games. I'm wanting to build a true 3D terraria-like game. Same side view 2D looks, but being able to move in and out of further depth dimensions. Mineclone is a minecraft clone built in Minetest. It has mobs, items, etc, farming, the lot of it. I hope you'll give that a try as well, since it'd be closer to a minetest experience. Also, don't try and find the bottom of the world. It's very very deep. 1000 depth is not even barely scratching the surface.

I've known about Minetest for quite a while. It's really cool. I thought I had more to say, I don't, this comment is useless. EDIT: after having watched the video I now want to make this comment not useless by clearing up some things. First of all, this game isn't just a generic Minecraft ripoff. From what I know, this was actually originally just a coding project done for fun that eventually turned into this. Secondly, this game is way cooler than just what Mumbo showed in this video because of the modding scene. Obviously there's not much to base Minetest, this is on purpose because they want you to download mods to customize how you play the game. Modding can go from anywhere between small additions to the base game to entire games of their own (I tried making one, but I didn't get very far with it. It was really cool though). You should try it if modded Minecraft isn't enough for you anymore I guess.

As a certified Minetest PvP enthusiast, I must mention an absolutely crucial and interesting death mechanic: bone blocks. Upon death, your items are put into a bone block, which acts like a chest for your items that you can instantly pick up. For a set period of time, the bones are "fresh", meaning that only you can take your items. After 15 minutes or however long it's configured to be, they become "old", and anyone can take your items. This prevents items from despawning, but also introduces an infinitely interesting element to PvP, wherein you need to defend and block off your opponent's bones until they become old to actually steal the items. The deceptive simplicity of the mechanic is replaced with dozens of mindblowing shenanigans when you also take into account all the ways you may protect (claim) areas. To give just one example: The first person can, by simply placing a protection block, prevent anyone from breaking or placing blocks in a 5-block radius around it -- this is a mod used for protection on many servers. You would think that a bone block is surrounded with cobblestone and protection blocks is impossible to retrieve. But the second person can, by simply lagswitching, break through any amount of layers of fortification as long as they have the tools to, are within reach of the bone block at the beginning, are alive at the end, and haven't been timed out. But the third person (other than just not dying to the retriever) can surround the bones in layers of different hard blocks that require different tools just to break in time to not be timed out -- obsidian, cactus (which requires an axe to cut), blocks that hurt you in response to digging like beehives -- all somehow infused with bugged armor stands that make digging harder due to being entities with large hitboxes. But the fourth person pulls any ace out of their sleeve, and just ender pearl glitches into the mound from below, as you would with bedrock in Minecraft. Point is, the shenanigans spiral up and up in creativity, and never gets boring.

Thank you for bringing light to the open source world Mumbo! To those of you in the comments who believe this to be a minecraft clone, please note that Minetest is 13 years old and was developed as a free and open source voxel game engine, NOT as a Minecraft clone/rip-off. The main premise is to encourage making your own game or mods using the engine. The vanilla "MineTest Game" is what Mumbo was playing here, and is barebones for a reason. You add the content through community mods or even your own mods using the LUA programming language, and there is a built in content screen to add mods on the fly. Sure, you can mod Minecraft, but it is NOT officially supported, and Mojang makes it hard for modding APIs like Forge and Fabric to even exist. Minetest has also always been cross-platform and everything you make within Minetest can be used on every platform! Does it still have a long way to go? Yes, but it was never meant to compete with the likes of Minecraft. It has and will always be its own thing. If you made it this far, thank you for reading! Microsoft has been taking Minecraft in directions that none of us like, and supporting the team behind Minetest and big creators like Antvenom and Mumbo shedding light on the awesome team and community behind Minetest is exactly what the game needs for more content to be made for it and to push this generation towards free and open source community driven projects like this. Thanks for reading!

I actually played minetest before purchasing minecraft back in like 2013 or maybe earlier than that.. it was around version 1.7.2 that I started minecraft. There are a bunch of mods that add so much to minetest.. including dropping blocks when mined so you have to pick them up like in minecraft.. some mobs.. tons of new ores and quasi-dimensions, etc. It is definitely worth playing if you grab the mods that enhance the game in a way you would like to play it. Mods are relatively easy to edit, as I seem to recall it uses LUA as a programming language instead of java. It has been many years, however, so my memory may be off. In any case you will likely have times when you want to play it again, I am sure.
