    I have bartended and bounced at a lot of clubs. Checking ID's is really important. I've also confiscated a lot of ID's and the only ones I've reported were expired or obviously tampered with military IDs. Blacklights are good for the questionable ones and asking horoscope questions if you believe it's a good fake. Hesitation means that they don't know, but everyone knows their horoscope. I wanted to see his video, but bartenders do watch these.

The only place I have a problem was at a convenience store in Massachusetts. Hey Jason! I've been spending several hours a day over the past few weeks searching the Internet for bartending tips/info and came across your channel a couple days ago. After binging/taking notes on many of your videos I came across your KZread NextUp vid and was stoked to realize that you're from Encinitas! I'm a Del Mar local myself, and just wanted to say thanks for the killer info because it's helping me, and I'm sure many others; rapidly progress through these beginning stages of our bartending knowledge. Quick question: I've searched the Web for the types of CA "tips trainings" for ID validity that you mention around 6:16 of this video, but can't seem to find any information on the CA Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control or anywhere else regarding it. In your experience is this training generally offered by employers, or am I just looking in the wrong places? Thanks again man! And don't forget to wish/pray for some sick winter swells ;D

    This wasn't a bartender, but I went to a Safeway and was denied by the cashier and manager because they said the birthdate looked "smeared." I attend school in Virginia, but I'm from New York, and of course, I am using my NY State driver's license. The numbers representing the birth month and day have a faded/grayish look while the year is black, but that's the design. I guess they thought I made alterations to it. Long story short, I went to another Safeway, where they scanned my ID, and the sale went through. Using an out-of-state license definitely draws more scrutiny though.

    Bars serving alcohol is very common checking for both real and fake id's, don't forget about corner stores that serves and sells lottery ticket as corner store owners check for id as well to determine if the id is fake when buying lotto tickets, you cannot play and buy lotto tickets if you're under 21 pending on state law.

    An expired license is still valid to determine age. The fact it expired doesnt change your age or date of birth. As long as it is the person, the ID shows the correct age, the ID is satisfactory.

  • @BartendingPro

    @BartendingPro

    7 жыл бұрын

    You're technically correct, but this is usually a stipulation of state alcohol control boards...check your individual state guidelines. I know that in California an expired license is no longer acceptable as valid. Yes you can use your better judgement and figure out if it's the person most of the time, but from the regulatory standpoint you can understand why the laws are written that way... how do you know if it's not some chick with her older sisters ID? Or a guy with his older brothers ID? When I was young I had several friends who took advantage of both those scenarios successfully for a few years after high school. There is always some degree of making a personal call on the situation, but it is your job as a bartender to know where the line in the sand is legally, otherwise it can put an establishments liquor license at risk.

  • @jwhome9319

    @jwhome9319

    7 жыл бұрын

    I thnk the bars and ABC just blanket say so to make a bright line and remove all discretion and risk. The law doesnt specifically say so in Calif. as fare as I can find. And, there would be NO prosecution if a bartender accepted an expired license as ID if the person was 21+. Ya think if a cop stopped a person who looked very young and was in possession of alcohol...but his expired license said he was 22....and arrested him.....would that be a false arrest? Can you imagine a cop for instance, arresting a person for say...person under 21 in possession of a handgun if he had an expired license that said he was 22. Ya think that might be a false arrest? Pretty much that expired ID would be valid to show age and prevent those arrests eh? In Calif....notaries have specific written laws about ID. they must accept a current driver license as ID, they may also accept an expired one if it was issued in the past five years as being valid, even though expired. Bars just play it safe by not accepting any expired ID...............but it aint no law eh? Old expired ID is risky. If it expired yesterday.....does that make it a crime to sell alcohol to the holder of the expired ID that says he is over 21? Dont think so.

  • @deusvult5405

    @deusvult5405

    5 жыл бұрын

    Unfortunately, you may be able to determine it's the individual but it's expired and let them in, but it's your job and your employer's licenses on the line. It is easier to consider an expired license the same as not having one at all. They have the option of purchasing a standard identification card (not a drivers license) to use to enter or purchase. If you get pulled over with an expired license you get fined, so consider that if you let someone with an expired license in.

    A good friend had a bar on the beach in Florida. He had a simple rule. He really didn't care if you had a valid ID. If you looked under 21 you did NOT get in. Go someplace else.. Second, if you looked 21 or over and your ID was the least bit sketchy, no drinks. His license was important and to him far more important than your happy hour. He also used the fast answer to the key question. He trained all his bartenders to know the date for 21 and ask the person's birthday. Any hesitation and out you went.

    I find one thing really irritating about certain states laws and certain bars policies regarding IDs. I am 21. My license was issued to me in the state where I live when I was 19 since I moved out of state and couldnt use my old license. Well licenses don’t expire for 5 years, which means I’m stuck with my vertical ID until 2024. Which also mean getting harassed for having a fake ID relatively often, specifically when I’m out of state. Usually in state, the liquor stores know that this is a real thing that happens relatively often, so they don’t make a big thing out of it. But out of state, it becomes a serious pain in the ass, and sometimes there’s just no way to explain to someone that it’s a valid, government issued ID. I get it, they’re just trying to protect themselves and I don’t fault them for that, but it seems like many people don’t know about this being an issue. Believe me I don’t like it any more than they do. These classes should talk about that more. I have a few friends who work at bars and had to do these classes and there was certainly mention of vertical IDs belonging to minors, but no inkling that legal, of-age adults can also have them.

    just call the cops and have them verify your id is real. the bar will usually feel pretty embarrassed because taking a real id is illegal and they might give you some free drinks! it’s still annoying. i have a similar story too. i now go to college in another state so i usually will get accused of it being fake because it’s from another state. it also doesn’t help that i was a very late bloomer and still look like i’m 14.

    I was the only bartender on a packed night. Doors on both sides of the establishment to enter. No security. Some guy shows up and asks for 2 budlights "who's the other one for?" he said "Just for me, it's busy" (reasonable answer). I kept my eye on him and saw him with only one beer talking to a young looking female. I ran to them, snatched the beer out of her hand and, in a very forceful tone, for the female to show me her ID. She said she didn't have one, then I proceeded to remove them both. Yes, humans are typically liars and only think about themselves. They have to be federally issued IDs. They have to have photo and birth date. No foreign IDs. This was something I had to deal with because people would bring reservation IDs (Sioux Indian Reservation), but it is already known that they can have their birth date changed on it (along with it not having a photo). If it's not issued by the US government, state or federal, and doesn't have the presaid information (at a minimum) then no. Some establishments are cool with military IDs and Passports, but since I have both of those IDs I am able to detect fakes. EDIT: also, I've been called a racist because of denying foreign IDs. Typically, if someone gets that butthurt then they shouldn't be in a bar anyway. What an incredible life a bartending life is.

If you're in the country with a B-1 Visa or some form of green card, you can get an identification card from your DMV and purchase it that way. You might run into situations like that, but if you do I'd recommend speaking with a manager and say that you're on vacation and have your passport. You'll be fine. People in the US don't typically have passports. It varies from state to state. Some allow you to use any government I.D. Some states require a passport (since those are virtually the same regardless of country) and others may require the I.D. to be from a bordering country (Mexico or Canada). Then there's also house rules. These are rules on what I.D.'s they take made by the bar itself, not the state government.

    My sincere apologies Josh! Not sure why this video is set this way, I always try to have captions on for all my videos. I've updated the settings so hopefully YT updates the video with captions here shortly. Thanks for letting me know!

    I tried to use someone elses ID and the bartender is all "Sorry this doesnt look like you" So we sat down and I was drinking out of my friends beer (it was an 18 and over bar) I'm telling you and everyone all of my bar stories in the comments. I should be a bartender. I know how to pour from a keg :)

    People like you are the reason that bartending gets so frustrating. You don't care about the business, other peoples livelihoods, or respect for yourself. You'll brag about sneaking into bars, drinking underage, and you're the same type that get establishments busted for your crap. You should not be a bartender. If you don't believe me, then put your stories on your resume/application and see how they appreciate it.

    considering that other countries you can be 16 and people look incredibly variant from 18-21..... Also, as I've gotten older, I can't even tell the difference between a 16 year old and a 21 year old. So yeah, the IDs are important. So is autocorrect :P
