Yep. Don't let the school fool you into thinking its about the drinks...that's only ¼ of what you do as a bartender...most importantly is to understand the business and your role as a bartender in helping that business continue to grow. And don't sweat it...you'll be fine :)

Yep, bartending is pretty simple. And you'll make pretty much those same 10-20 for your entire career, at most any bar you work at. Don't tell anyone, but the secret to learning bartending is learning the drinks!

Good question...you just charge for whatever the liquor is. So if it's made with vodka, you charge what a shot of vodka is; if it's made with tequila, you charge what a shot of tequila is...and so on. Then if the mixer(s) are a premium (like fresh lime juice, or red bull, etc...) then you could/would usually add a few bucks for that...

i started bartending at a resort hotel about a month ago, before that i was a barback so i was familiar with a lot of the drinks and equipment, but not so much at dealing with customers. it's a lot less stressful than it was a couple of weeks ago, but i still get stressed when it's really busy, or when i forget recipes. this and the busy shift video helped out quite a bit, as well as the 4 count video. mine was too slow, so i'll take that with me to work today. thanks!

Thank you for this. I am doing bartending school mostly to learn the basics of how to manage the bar and how to pour as well as to learn a few drinks and build confidence in what it is that I am doing. The idea of forgetting a drink still scares the heck out of me but this helped some. :D

You're truly great dude, your vids are really good. However... I don't know if it's where I'm from (I'm British) or what, but where I work you'd be surprised that a lot of people *actually do* try and play stump the bar tender. I work in a basic working-class pub, and we have some of the drinks you describe, nothing too fancy. Woo Woo: vodka, archers and cranberry. No "real" cocktails. They even included Morgans Spiced and coke on the cocktails menu and called it Captains Favourite! Haha! BUT: I get douchebags coming in and asking me: SO, how do you make a long island iced tea correctly? I said to him: To be honest hun, we don't really serve proper cocktails here, I'd have to ask you how you want it?. And he said: Well then you're not a proper bar-tender. So I said to him: OK, I'll make you one but you have to pay for it. He said: If it's done right then I will. So anyway, I'm a bit rusty but I *do* know how to do a long-island-iced-tea. But because we're not a real cocktail bar, I had to ring up the shots separately, and it was about £16 (I think that's about $35). He had to pay for it! because his friends validated me that he had asked for it, and had said he'd pay for it, even though he knew we don't really serve cocktails. That soon wiped his grin off! However, back to your original point... yeah, a lot of people are sympathetic. But many aren't. The key to it is confidence. As I became more confident and assertive with customers, I got less complaints. Of course, I improved, but I think the confidence, not the excellence, was what made me calmer and treated better. People are just people at the end of the day. And most bar-tending pros take their time, which requires less panicking.

Thank for the very interesting comments. Like a previous poster, I’m English, and unfortunately there is no genuine British bar culture consisting of traditional cocktails, such as you American’s have. Many British view a cocktail as a gimmick drink, you know, something blue or purple with an umbrella and a sparkler. Twice I’ve tried to order advertised cocktails in England, only to have the barmaid (barmaid in both cases) roll their eyes and say they were too busy to make it. One of the reasons I go to a bar is to sample the drinks, and it was a real pleasure when I visited New York recently to be able to order a Margarita and the staff know what it was and serve it with professionalism. One bartender in a cocktail bar I visited in NY bemoaned that despite a stunning variety of drinks, all most British girls ordered was a vodka and diet coke. I smiled as I sipped my Manhattan.

"Nobody intentionally comes to a bar wanting to play "stump the bartender" Good advice! it's not about you it's about THEM! they are out to have a good time , drink what they like & not mess with you and your job! another thing along with that...Would this "Signature Drink" be able to be Googled or found on the internet somehow? many of us do have smart phones on us with internet service is that a possibility?

No luck on the answer being identical to mine... don't think there's a wrong answer... I just think you should go with whatever feels comfortable and kind of stick to it so It's Always There In Your Arsenal in your not panicked or stressed out when it happens...... And the answer for being in the situation where you really don't want to let on that you don't know how to make it... which is the worst... Maybe it is a X's new fling trying to make you look stupid... Maybe it's just a d-bag and you don't want to break confidence for this jerk... This is what i do: After this d-bag has ordered their flaming surfboard... I just continue to do my bartending thing ... work the server tickets... grab some shit i need... crack a joke was a regular at the bar... blah blah blah... you get the idea... I continue multitasking... All the while I am gaining the trust and confidence of the dude that just ordered the Flaming surfboard LOL... and making him / her wait because mentally this flips that little power move right back on them... mentally and literally implying that I'm in control and that they are waiting on me ... Slightly evil... but so what this guy's/gal is a dick for ordering that flaming surfboard hoping to make me look like an idiot LOL...... I move with purpose and conviction... amongst all the crap that I am doing to confuse and distract them with my Superior skills, and far superior personality i will peck away at my p.o.s. system (tht contains my recipes btw) and get tht recipe.... then i can be on my way to make him or her the best flaming surfboard they've ever had in their life... and quietly hope they choke on it when I pass it to him / her... lol.... bottom line being that I say: fake it till you make it... Just move with purpose and confidence... never let em see you struggle and never break stride... And if you got to go to the back and Google it just make that part of it... Let people at the bar know that you've got to go grab some beer or whatever... Act like you're going to get some food from the kitchen... Whatever.. Now, if you're in a situation where you don't care if you let on that you know the drink recipe or not... and this is the individual that comes across as a alpha male or female... maybe they are trying to gain some cool points in front of their friends or whatever... Let him have it... who cares... You're just there to make money... Play into their personality ... Let them look like the cool guy and eagerly await their glorious drink recipe... it will pay off in the end. make him / her feel like they are the prom Princess or King Dick Dong... and happily accept that fat tip at the end of it all... In my opinion... a customer likes to I feel special... Like you do something just for them... Again, Play into that... Know what they like... and anticipate needs... even if you were just giving them flatware... Make sure you mention ''there's your flatware just like you like it!" Even though it's the same so where you give everybody else... LOL Anticipating needs is the key to making fat cash tho... the servers I work with make that mistake on a daily basis and it drives me nuts... I work at a margarita bar which serves tacos burritos nachos etc etc... Messy ass food by Nature... Never fails... I go to drop off somebody's food and there they sit with their nacho and complimentary chips and salsa and a margarita... with that one crumpled ass napkin that contained their flatware... gtfoh... So you mean to tell me every person that has ever come in through these doors hasn't asked you for additional napkins? You haven't figured that out yet? Duh!
