Is the Sony a5100 Worth Buying in 2020?

Ғылым және технология

Is the a5100 by SONY still worth buying in 2020?
The SONY a5100 is an entry level budget mirrorless camera ideal for VLOGGING and KZread. It was released in 2014 but I picked one up in 2017 and have been using it for both stills photography as well as video work. Find out my verdict!
Are you still using the SONY a5100 in 2020, or thinking of buying one? Let me know in the comments!

This afternoon I mounted a helios 44-2 58mm f2 onto the a5100 and was pleasantly surprised. Granted, it was on a tripod, but, the results were very good, thanks to the focus peaking on this camera :) Keep up with the great work :) pete

    Yes, it's quite a nice camera, bought it in 2018, and though I also use an A6400, the portability and that zoom in with the telephoto trigger is great. The flippable screen is also good to take photos at floor level without laying on the floor. Great for macro, only major flaw for me is the lack of a viewfinder.

    Still using my a5100s in 2020 ... I'm always looking for them, because the way I use them its possible that damage would put one out of business. They are about 250usd with a kit here in Vietnam. Anytime I see one in that price range, I check it out. It's still the best gimbal camera I've used ... it's so small it balances easily on any gimbal. I use it a lot with Camoodoo remote app. It works great and gives a lot of options when using the camera. Thanks for your great videos, tutorials and info on this great little camera.

    Still have and use my Nex-6, and it still takes great photos. I like the flip up screen, but I'd miss the EVF. The one complaint I have is the lack of any stabilization in either. Not many 6 year old cameras have IBIS though. I also use adapters with my vintage lenses, the focus peaking really helps and I've taken some great shots with them.

    Question: In terms of recording for KZread, I can't see how it's possible to record for over 25 mins with this camera. As I would be making videos to edit, could this camera be plugged in to the power supply to extend its duration or could I alternatively record 3 separate 15- min recordings? I'm just trying to see how I could do youtube with this, thanks!

  • @ArronPrescott

    @ArronPrescott

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes I'd say both of those options are viable. Using an external power source will mean it takes longer for this camera to overheat. Though personally I just use the battery and if it overheats, wait a few minutes then start again. I find it records for 20-25 mins before overheating.

    Hi Arron, I’ve used the a5100 for a few years now. It’s a really great camera. But mine will consistently overheat after a little less than five minutes set to AVCHD. Shooting MP4 isn’t as bad but I don’t use it. My understanding is that it’s the writing to the card that causes the heat. If you use an external recorder, that’s supposed to eliminate the problem.

  • @ArronPrescott

    @ArronPrescott

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yeah it seems like a lot of people have this issue worse than I've experienced perosnally. Very frustrating as recordings as short as 5 mins would be very limiting. Using an external recorder is probably the only option.

    It does force better planning when shooting videos. I’ve found that overall, especially as a beginner, it’s moved me away from long continuous shots and improved my content as a result. If someone needs to record long sessions, a dedicated video camera is going to be a better fit anyways. And the flip screen is priceless.
