The front-end of the Rivians genuinely looks better in person. It still won't be for everyone, but I found all the Rivians just plain look better in person. You don't get the real proportions on video or in photos. If you're unsure on the looks and styling I highly suggest finding a way to get out and see one in the flesh. They're really beautiful vehicles

Great looking SUV - great, thorough review as well. A swiss army knife vehicle (can do a lot of things fairly well) is appealing, as are vehicles that excel in one or two areas. I am not sure the Rivian excels at anything in particular but it can haul a family and has decent space behind 3rd seat+frunk, it's fast, it's efficient (although I believe less efficient than almost any other EV), it's stylish, it has some luxury, technologically advanced, can off road (with pucker factor due to vehicle cost). Question - how many regen and suspension modes? Any idea when longer range battery available?

Though the rear seats mobility could definitely be much better, Im curious how often owners are flipping between flat-3rd row vs seating position. I chose the R1S to have that extra seating capacity during those family visits every so often throughout the year. Besides that, I will leave the 3rd row down most of the time so no need to constantly raise/lower them as reviewers usually do. If I constantly needed 3-rows, I'd leave seats up most of the time. Same applies to the vents, once I set them I usually never touch them very often, if at all. But again, we'd all welcome a better/easier design for this price point.

💯 on need for Android Auto & Apple CarPlay: there are so many apps we have to be able to access, especially for off-road applications. 22:06 Also, it literally is a safety hazard to be forced to use my tiny phone for time-sensitive situations (checking on weather, chain restrictions, or shit, just accurate navigation, etc.). Rivian: Get ahold of your software team, check their egos, and add phone integrations into your tech roadmap. The engineers will get over it, and if they don’t, find some who will. Especially if we are going to adopt a nearly-buttonless interior. Forcing us to use your touchscreen for everything without (even a windowed) CarPlay or AA integration is unconscionable.

Some of the stuff like the built in air pump should be removed to save costs imho. I mean it’s nice but you can get a 12v air pump to keep in the back for like $20. So if this company wants to become profitable they need to rethink the unnecessary things like that.

These things are a joke without the new 180 kWh battery pack. Rivian was stupid to even put out with the 135. The R1T real world range barely over 200 miles if hypermiling at 1.8 miles / KWh. Maybe good for soccer moms, around town, but combined with the pathetic reliability of the EA charging network and barely 200 miles of real world range (won’t do that in the cold), this is a disaster for cross country. Even the charging performance is fairly poor with thermal management events throttling charge rate common. Only even consider with the 180 kWh “Big” battery pack. Even the Model Y smacks this thing for most smaller families with a 74 kWh pack, 3.7 miles / kWh and 250+ of real world usable range even in the moderate winter.

The motors are inboard, two in the center at the front for the front wheels and two at the rear. There are short drive shafts to each wheel which helps with wheel articulation for offroading. Towing is mixed. It can tow 11000lbs. If whatever you are towing is not very aerodynamic, like a big box trailer then you can lose up to half the range, so they aren't good for long distance. The more aerodynamic the trailer is the less range loss. All Rivians have a hitch receiver, there is a panel at the back to remove to reveal the hitch. The underbody is pretty flat, there metal and kevlar protection. The battery pack is also surrounded by a non-flammable foam, so there is lots of protection for the battery.
