Is the MAZDASPEED engine BAD? Is the MZR DISI Junk?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The engine that powers our Mazdaspeeds and MPS's is a ripper. However people seem to think that the MZR Engine is terrible. Apparently the Mazdaspeed engine is unreliable, and hard to make power on an MPS Engine. Today we're here to see whether the Mazdaspeed 2.3 Turbo MZR is a bad engine or not.
We will discuss Mazdaspeed Reliability, ease to modify to make power, MPS sound, theatre etc.!

Mods in the proper order, reputable mazdaspeed tuner(freektune) and proper maintenance, simple as that! To inform those that think its un-reliable, get your facts right, this 2.3 disi engines is one of the most reliable engines mazda has made in years. Mine never went for warranty. At this moment i went with forged pistons and manley rods with slightly bigger turbo, cams and exhaust manifold and guess what! is still running strong. This car is not for the average high school kid, you have to know the platform in order not to blow it up! simple as that

good video, helps with alot of the bad shit thrown around with these cars, yeah they can be a problem but like you said, get it done cheap and its gonna blow lol!! but I 100% agree on the VTO BOV, I highly recommend not running it like this unless tuned. Bought my Gen2 Speed 3 with one installed and all it was doing was throwing up engine lights and causing my car to run SUPER rich, removed it and chucked the OEM one back on and its been fine ever since. Only advantage would be holding boost a little better higher up the revs but the K04 looses its puff after 5500rpm any way :P

Most reliable engine I've ever known, and I've been a kseries expert for over 20years... owned my original-owner, no accidents, 1st RSX-S sold in Austin TX, for nearly 23years. Been tuning Hondas for 20years... i got a taste of a 2008 Speed3 when I bought one in 2011. Owned 4 since, and it's more reliable than any honda motor EVER, including the kseries. It's an incredible motor and car. Over 200k miles on one, and the only maintenance I've done is regular carbon cleaning every 3k miles using the liquid cleaner method through the induction system, AC compressor clutch changed twice (still the original compressor), sway bar bushings all around twice, belt tensioner, new struts/shocks all around, and a new clutch w/ rear main seal once... oh, and regular oil changes. Obviously, tires and brake pads. That's it. Only mods are the dealer intake, rear motor mount insert, and lighter wheels. You can see the car in action here... kzread.info/dash/bejne/k4OO2ayteJa1YKg.htmlsi=ttBKEpfWPT2DVmhX&t=2m38s Editt: people will hate and doubt, and yes, original turbo, original fuel pumps, original timing components, original fuel injector seals, even the original pcv valve

I'm surprised you didn't bring up the VVT issues, that the stock tune runs lean and that the injectors are not upgradeable. Also if anyone that reads this has the 2.3 or 2.5 MZR and was thinking of swapping to the DISI, don't. The stock block 2.5 can hold just as much power as a stock 2.3 DISI(without the DISI issues). So if you have the 2.3, swap to the 2.5 and boost it with a fat turbo. It's the same engine family as the DISI so most of the turbo parts that you need bolt right on. The 2.5 is also a cheap option to replace your 2.3 DISI bottom end if it's got a window.

Does it need a new turbo to stop that problem? Yes. Is it worth the $2K or so (on a car that's currently worth like $4K) to do so? Nope. Does it still work well and make plenty of power? Yup. My buddy has railed his mzr for 100k miles. 5-6k shifts each time. I purchased mine because of his good experience. The mazdaspeed 6 drive trains is garbage. And I will also note the mzr timing covers are both rattling and have been for some good time. (Note that this is the cover.. at least we think.) And yes the ko3 and ko4 suffer from issues. But I will say that all turbos have a lifespan. Currently my 13 with a ko4 is at 95k and it needs new seals. Slowly sipping my oil. My buddy's is a 07 and had his k03 replaced at 60k and it is still going strong at 140k. The second gen only came with a k04 for the last production year. Nothing to crazy as far as performance difference but you do have a sharper boost kick. I've driven both stock and while the 2nd gen has a tick more pep I honestly prefer the 1st gen. Also if you shifts get a little on the choppy side our cars cable set up stretch over time. Mine currently need replaced. I hope this has been some additional insight.

Yeah the mk7s have finominal tuning ability, however the mk5 and mk6 really don't, but they're owners still think they're as tunable as a mk7 or ms3 (the mk7 is far more tunable then a ms3)

So you said 2.3 Disi is a good engine. It can hold a nice power number etc. But if u want it to be reliable no dig races, only roll races. Stock 2.3 can not hold all the torque. I did in my speed 8 or 11 digs and it blew. The motor was in good condition, all stock, no mods at all. After that i did a little research and the truth is If u want a good realiable 2.3 u need forged internals. So a car with AWD (speed6) and you can't use this AWD system. WTF this is kinda lame. Stupid SR20 can take a lot of abuse in drifting and 2.3 can not handle a few starts from a dig...

  • @LifeOfTuners

Not really, it's all down to how the owner treats it/how well the cars been maintained etc. Even stock yes they can blow up if they're not treated well, Espically as higher milage is added to the equation. About the torque talk, they can hold 400wtq if it's been tuned but someone who knows the platform and can tune the torque to come in later and build progressively

@@LifeOfTuners My speed3 was treated like a baby. My father's friend bought one new from a dealer, had it for 11 years then i got it with 89k miles. He did oil changes after 5k miles or less, never more and never launched the car. I started using all the power and a rod went throught the block. One time I thought i did heard a rod knocking like 2 or 3 knocks and it stops. 2 days later 1 more dig launch and it blew. But if i am correct. it can take all the abuse, dig launches etc if the torque is tuned to hit way later ? i love mazdas, now i have 2015 mazda 3 but i'm thinking about getting gen 2 speed 3 for a project car but i am scared to blow another 2.3 disi.

German cars are unreliable stock! Japanese are reliable with +100 over stock! but putting 500 hp on a Mazdaspeed is kinda too much! my speed6 has 220k km on it with 350 hp! the only maintaince is needed was VVT at 200k ! runs like a clock!

Can you drop the links for this? Factory is a recirc valve, meaning when let off, the boost pressure is rerouted to after the throttle body (and ofc the maf sensor) since the maf sensor can't read this, from factory the ecu is programmed to account for this extra air to maintain afrs. However with a VTA, the boost pressure is vented to atmosphere, so the ecu calculates it's afrs to include that boost pressure that it no longer recieves, it can be tuned so that the ecu relies on the air only measured by the maf sensor. I'd love to see links to what you're talking about?
