Is the Honda Ridgeline a capable overlanding rig?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Let's consider the Honda Ridgeline as a viable option for overlanding. You gotta spend a few bucks, as Honda won't make you a "trail ready" Ridgeline, but building it out is half the fun.
If the "clothes make the man" then for sure the "mods make the truck". Here's what I got so far...

Rides like stock, just a bit taller. Suspension geometry is largely unaffected and there is no change to the Springs or spring rates. Definitely get a lift if you plan on doing anything more than a groomed Forest Road.

Skidplates, siped mudders, and a multi-mount winch could make one of these surprisingly capable on many surfaces. I'd like to see something like a rear Ox locker offered.

No-Lo Designs makes a full suite of skid plates. I have 3 so far. There is a custom Pre Runner front bumper with winch mount being made in North Carolina. Hit up Camping Randy at the Ridgeline Store for details. Lockers...closest we have is BALLS (brake assist line lock), a system developed for the mid sized Hondas by Manny aka K20 NART PRO on IG. Videos of Balls in action on JonDZ Adventuring YT Channel.

I plan to buy the Ridgeline and Tacoma. I live in Africa and we don't believe all this overland thing, because I already overland every day leaving my house and coming back home. Ally back roads are horrible and I have to drive on them every day. From my experience with horrible roads park the truck and walk because if you get stuck it's over

For me, I would go with the Ridgeline because it's smoother, more cabin space and all time AWD, but if what you said is true you should buy the Tacoma instead. I used to have a 2019 Tacoma and loved it a lot going off-roading. It's better for the bad roads, but if you live somewhere in town with a lot of good roads go for the Ridgeline which is still capable off-roading to an extent. Either way I love both vehicles.

NICE set up. These Honda’s are more capable than people give them credit for. I have a Honda Pilot with a Traxda 3.5” font, and 3.0” rear lift kit, and Toyo Open Country A/T lll’s 265/50R20’s I have gone up 3 mountain trails 2 of which were ranked as Moderate. The Pilot did everything I asked it to. But where it shined was driving through the steep curvy mountain roads getting to each trail. Also, the 95% of the everyday driving that I do. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kaCOt5iSnZe4hKw.html

@@ridgelineoverlanding I do have to watch my speed a bit, but most of the trails I drive on are fairly narrow/curvy so not much of a chance to go that fast. The bigger sidewall, would be better for off-road but I haven’t had any problems. I can air down a bit if I need to though. But honestly, most of the driving I do is on city streets. I have had a number of lifted trucks in the past, and I am amazed at how well this Pilot rides even with the lift. Im sure your Ridgeline rides great as well. Also, I just ripped off that little 3” strip under the bumper. It just reduces the approach angle, and get caught on everything.

I too, got rid of that little aerodynamic strip. I held onto it for a couple of years, but it was getting too beat up. The ride quality is indeed amazing on these vehicles! Not sure if you were on Facebook, but you should join the Lifted Honda Society group. Quite a few other Honda off road enthusiast groups out there too. Not sure how many groups there are that are pilot specific, but I’m pretty sure some of the Ridgeline groups would let you in.

The spacers are as close to a proper lift as you can get for an AWD. There are plenty of Ridgelines and Passports running even bigger lifts with no issue. I’m not too worried about it.

Did you watch the full video? I admit the Ridge is no rock crawler, but she's got good payload, great handling, and a solid torque vectoring AWD system. For light to moderate trail duty you don't need a fully build Jeep or Taco. The Ridgeline gets me up to the Fire Towers and other scenic vistas I want to check out on my multi day adventures. I'd call that capable. Optimal? No, not really. Best of kind...of course not...but she gets the job done. Thanks for checking us out!

@@ridgelineoverlanding well said. Most people that buy the Ridgeline isn't for off-roading, but in time that needs it, the Ridgeline can handle to an extent and won't get you stuck. Anything in particular that makes you feel the Ridgeline falls short? "Overlanding" is a really (really) broad term, and so is the word "capable". It is capable as proven by the high mountain adventures I've done. It's no rock crawler, though they can be built up quite a bit more to handle some decent rock work. (Jon DZ Adventuring). Anyway, thanks for checking us out. Be well, and go play outside!

@@ridgelineoverlanding In my mind rock crawling or mudding really isn't overlanding either. I think the Rigeline would work just fine. 98% of the driving is daily or on highway anyways. I will be considering this and will have to DD it as well.

People are very close minded and ill informed when it comes to Overlanding. You are right that wheeling and rock crawling are not at the heart of overlanding. You need a few key aspects for real overlanding, as in multi day self-sufficient trips. You need payload, something Gladiators and Tacomas fall very short on. You need reliability, which only the Tacoma, Tundra and Ridgeline really have. You need space, and as far as mid size trucks go, the Ridgeline is king. Comfort is nice…also a win for the Ridgeline. Haters gonna hate…and I just laugh at their ignorance. I know my rig has limitations but those limits are far beyond what most give it credit for.
