Is The Future Of Peacekeeping Peaceful? | Shannon Zimmerman | TEDxUQ

The United Nations is an embodiment of a continually evolving international order and UN peace operations are the physical manifestation of that order. Though there is no international consensus as to what peace and security mean, the prevailing understanding of these ideas is modeled by what peace operations do and how they do it. So what do current peace operations tell us about how the world understands peace and security? Has the recent global focus on terrorism changed what we think peace and security really means?
Shannon Zimmerman is a peacemaker specializing in understanding how ideas of peace and security interact. She is currently a PhD researcher at the Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect based at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Her research focuses on the intersections of the Protection of Civilians (PoC) and counter-terrorism norms within United Nations peacekeeping missions. She specifically looks at how these norms interact with each other at the field level and their impact on the structure and nature of contemporary peacekeeping missions. Shannon holds a Masters in Conflict Resolution from Georgetown University in Washington D.C. Previously, Shannon worked at the United States Institute of Peace and the North American branch of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

I think that there's been always a question, a dilemma, a choice between national security, sovereignty, interest, and global things like peace, harmony, brotherhood, understanding. We might easily perish until we comprehend that it's immeasurably foul to worth ones instead of another. WE ALL ARE PEOPLE. That's enough to stop waging wars, make conflicts nonsensical and needless. That's more than enough to help each other in difficult times like now when we, industrialized and technically advanced society, we couldn't prevent the spreading of the tiny, basically nonliving virus across the planet in a few months. Tha's real problem when hundreds, million of unguilty people just die due to our arrogance and stupidity. We still have things like patriotism, an engine washing brains of vulnerable people making them feel that they are special and the most important, powerful. What is power? Killing others because of the fact they are not like you, because their skin color is different from yours, or because they practice another religion? What are the causes that fuel empty heads to take the gun and go after someone who does not share the same things you share, who does not resemble you? I know. There is no cause. BECAUSE THERE IS NO SENSE.

She said there are 125,000 UN troops deployed. Making them the largest force in the world. But the US deployed over 193,000 in the same year as this video. I'm confused...

this is just not correct, the US deploys around 60,000-70,000 people during times of small war like Iraq and Afghanistan, this is the total statistic of deployed troops between all military bases and active troops.

but there HAS to be security. We need to feel secure. You know, maybe you're right, maybe we can't have both peace *and* security but if it weren't for the high security in airports, policemen risking their lives everyday, we wouldn't be secure. There will always be bad people and the mentally ill and we need some sort of security from them. We just have to figure out a way to have both peace and security.
