@@ohifonlyx33 probably not but I've seen her do some basic picking and strum patterns. She's a songwriter, so her primary drive for any instrument she wants to play is learn basic chord shapes and how to properly strum or pick some basic patterns to backup her singing. I think she's said as much before that she's not looking to be a virtuoso at any instrument since for her they are songwriting tools and accompaniment for her voice.

One of my favorite solo performances on guitar by Taylor is “Death by a Thousand Cuts” from her NPR Tiny Desk session. She does a great job maintaining a pretty cool picking pattern through some challenging vocals. It's a great song with one of her very best bridges.

I think it's worth mentioning from the viewpoint of a vocalist, she is one of the most effortless performers at playing guitar and piano while singing at the same time. I played piano as a formal instrument all through to the end of high school. I have studied voice and sung in internationally competitive choirs for about 20 years at this point. I couldn't do even half the job Swift does at playing and singing complicated, often contrapunctal rhythms simultaneously.

Man I struggle to play All Too Well without getting tired with my hand 😂 People are like “those are just 4 chords no barre chords” But the thing is to be able to sing and play an instrument at the same time playing at the right timing

People simply do NOT realize....here I'll offer a "lay person" option: Pat your head and rub your tummy: For 3 hrs straight (because if she's not playing and singing, she's doing choreography and singing) Be sure not to make any mistakes either, because they'll be posted online and made fun of for months...because humanity is full of trolls. I said what I said.

she is a flawless rythmic guitar player. I realized this when I, already having a lets say intermediate guitar playing level, wanted to cover some of her songs on acoustic while singing too. The strumming patterns she uses, as well as the palm muting combined with the more ringing open chords when choruses arrive, make it no joke to try and play like her. I think she is a really smart player, may be not the hardest or brightest techniques, but sometimes making just the right moves to make an acoustic guitar suit your voice and match the songs’ needs is all you need, and she is the perfect example of it

i’d say i’m a beginner guitar player and i can mostly play that through, i just struggle with switching chords for some of it

And she writes or co-writes every one of her songs, plus songs for other artists. And on the Eras tour, she’s been doing an acoustic set every show that includes playing guitar. But she doesn’t just do one or two separate songs, she actually takes a couple songs and mashes them together hours before the show. They end up blending seamlessly and sound out of this world together, with very little practice. She’s incredible.

@@MisterPerson-yr6mk Oh awesome. I guess that means we can all go play sold out shows in huge stadiums. Just us and our guitar in front of 70,000 people, no backup band or track. Playing and singing two or even three songs blended together, in a way that makes sense, weaving back and forth between songs. Doing different mash-ups like this several times a week, arranged hours before each show, and never performing the same mash-up twice. And then doing the exact same thing on piano. If I’d have known how easy all this was, I’d have become a billionaire sooner. 🙄

Mashing up her songs isn’t actually that difficult because all of her songs share similar chord progressions and have simple melodies and simple arrangements. There is a whole youtube video about the chord progressions Taylor Swift uses in her songs. And you will see that songs that share the same chord progression can be easily played simultaneously without sounding odd. She isn’t doing something extraordinary.

She's got killer right-hand technique and she makes it look easy. I know a ton of folks who've picked up a guitar and can't check off either of those boxes.

I haven't finished watching yet but while I think of it, the thing that says she has guitar chops to me is how little she looks at her hands.

The few "banjo" videos all have the guitar shaped like a banjo (with six pegs, six strings, and she strums it like a guitar; doesn't roll or pick it like a banjo.) She does do a single strike on a large drum in one song, but I haven't found any actual performances of clarinet or a drum kit. Can you identify?

She is a singer writer composer and she uses guitar or piano to accompany her singing and not the reverse. She doesn’t need to be a virtuoso still her skill level with the guitar and the piano is pretty good. Besides when she is singing and playing alone in a 90,000 thousand people stadium she’s doing fine what else could she need ? It’s amazing and not many people can do that.

She's making more money with her guitar than I am with mine. I'd say that makes her pretty much- good enough.

I am a big fan of this woman. I don't think Taylor's strengths are in her instrument playing. She's no slouch but she doesn't have to be a virtuoso on piano or guitar. For her they are vehicles for her songwriting. Also after the songs are born and given to the masses she plays her guitar and sings to it with her band and her dancers as part of a huge performance. So even without playing really difficult music it's already a lot. I also like that she can play both acoustic and electric. She doesn't have to completely shred to prove herself.

From what I see she does not play single note lines or riffs on guitar but her strumming and rhythm are flawless.

Nice video! and Yes, she is. There are many guitarist on KZread who likes her. What I try to stay away though is the rock metal dudes whatever who knows how to play one song of nirvana and they think fender made a guitar for them too. It's the debate that goes around who minimize her skills, she's not classicaly trained on guitar, she learned to be able to craft songs, same for piano. She did it to be a better musician. What I don't like also is some say it's just x amount of chords blah blah, and? Would you expect her to play a flamenca guitar solo? I was just watching a video about a pianist and metalhead react to one of her songs, the pianist said TOM PETTY HAD A CAREER SPANNING YEARS WITH ONLY 3 CHORDS, and that particular song they reacted has 4, there's other who have more.

@@FC-qb9wp at this point they are just so desperate to try and find something negative about her even if it is common with others : her chord progressions, multiple variants of vinyls (even tho I think she has the least ones), jet lag use and so on. She is not the only one who does this but because she does them, she is evil. Also she earned one billion dollars by using those simple chords. She could use more complicated ones I am sure but it is what the fans enjoy

Taylor wrote "Better Man," but it was recorded by the band Little Big Town....and Taylor won a Grammy award for Best Country Song for it (an award that goes to the songwriter). One of her many Grammy awards (she has won more Album of the Year Grammy Awards than any artist in history). She has released 270 songs in her career, many of them can be found on KZread, played live. Check out: "Death By a Thousand Cuts" live in Paris, and also, there is a cell phone video on KZread of her playing in a child's hospital room. She's playing, "We Are Never Getting Back Together," but standing up and dancing and singing while playing guitar for a little boy.

So glad this popped up on my fy because of Taylor. I play piano but wish I could play guitar. This was great. I wish you had done the full performances. Her bridges are awesome. Please do more Taylor. Great reaction. So interesting.

Everyone who says she can’t play the guitar well should watch the npr tiny desk concert. I was quite surprised that she showed up all on her own, no band mates, no backup singers, just her and the instruments and her voice. Not a lot of artists dare to do that in such an intimate setting! Props to her! She will always be one of the greatest artists in my book. ❤️

I actually started learning guitar by copying taylor swift's live performances because she always uses those simple chords that are easy to play but always sound really nice 😊 love your video!

Thanks for this, it's very instructive. So much commentary - especially from men, unfortunately - is curiously hostile and dismissive of Taylor Swift as just a fizzy pop princess, based on knowing hardly any of her work. It's nice to see a professional guitarist give her a detailed, knowledgeable analysis.

Ahh I wish you would have kept on watching the third performance until the bridge cause it’s my favourite guitar part! Also, as other commenters mentioned, please react to one of the Death by a Thousand cuts acoustic performance! Tiny desk or live in Paris are both so great!

I love her performance of Never Grow Up from The Eras Tour! Sadly I don’t think there’s a professional recording of it, but it’s such a complex song on so many levels I don’t even know how to explain it but maybe you could! And she makes it seem so effortless

Taylor makes everything look effortless. She is absolutely amazing

It seems like she excels exactly at what she needs that guitar for, and that's to be able to write songs and perform the songs she wrote. She decided as a kid that she wanted to be a songwriter and she spent the rest of her life mastering just what she needs for that. I really admire that kind of dedication to one craft.

She's great at playing guitar, I'm actually learning guitar because I want to be as good as her and being able to play all of her long and wonderful discography

I saw a vid where she talked about still having a guitar teacher (I guess though that was 10 years ago or something mad - time passes!!)...she also seems to have a team of song-writers or mates to write with...which is probably where that Gsus came from.

She doesn't have a "team" of songwriters. She either writes alone or with one more person, who's basically the co producer too. Her songs rarely have more than 2 co writers and for her last 5 albums she works with the same 2 people. She doesn't have a random team for each album. She works with friends she has good chemistry with.

Her Grammy songwriting showcase is pretty sweet imo. Just her and the guitar.

Singing is her strong point. No one ever said she was a better than average guitar player. Three chords and truth. Note, the singing competitions where contestants use their guitar, often encouraged them to leave the instrument behind and just , sing.

Taylor has proven on countless occasion that she can play multiple instruments while singing..6 string + 12 strings acoustic..electric guitar..piano..banjo & ukulele.. She's not an expert like J.Hetfield ofc but she can hold her own with just her & her guitar with no backup band..be it singing to 100 audience at coffee house..or on a high profile music awards or to 90,000 pack audience in a stadium. And i would say that only few artist ever willing to risk that..coz when u play with backing band, u can afford to make mistakes but on ur own, even the tiniest mistake will scream itself out.. 🤍🤍

You'll be surprised at how different peoples hands are who play. There are even some guitar players who don't have fingers and have a little attachment for a guitar pick on the end of their arm. You got this!

No one could know for certain apart from her but it certainly appears that way.

She literally grew up playing piano since she was in diapers, and was gifted her first guitar at 8 I believe.

Maybe watch her play the piano too.

Considering that most of her songs she writes are started by on the guitar or piano it shouldn’t be a surprise. Could go even further if they did their research and said that she can play a 12 string and a banjo on top of acoustic and electric guitars. People tend to think that to be a good guitarist you have to play almost exclusively lead guitar stuff (EVH, Hendrix), and whereas that is impressive, personally, I think rhythm players are just as amazing. Malcom Young is considered one of the best guitarist and he plays rhythm. Taylor Swift is a rhythm player, and she’s incredible at it. Also the fact that she started playing couple years younger than so many guitar-heroes just blows my mind haha. I’d check out newer clips of her playing instruments

Rhythm guitar skills are certainly important, especially if you sing too. There's arguably less use in being able to only play lead guitar but not rhythm.

Taylor guitar playing is very basic. For the most part she plays open cords (cowboy cords). Her playing works for the music she plays but it can't be compared to any truly advanced player like Molly Tuttle.

True, Molly Tuttle is a genius in her field, a lot of those folk players are mind blowing with effortless technique. Sean Watkins from Nickel Creek comes to mind too.

Taylor is a country artist. She has a great voice and uses the guitar well. But she isn't in any way a really skilled guitarist. There is a vast difference between a country strummer and either a good flamenco player or a rock musician like Orinathi or Mick Fleetwood. Just play Malaguena properly and it's another form of music entirely. Taylor is exceptionally good at her style of music.

All of the stuff she does on guitar can easily be learned by someone who doesn't know how to play guitar within a few weeks tops. It's just chords.

I know what you're trying to say but a lot of students struggle with chords initially, especially older students.

I dont know why ppl are so impressed by her playing a 12 string? If you can play a 6 string guitar you can easily play a 12 string.

That's true, peoples perception of a 12 string guitar is that it's difficult when in reality it isn't all that different to a 6 string, maybe even easier depending on what you play. It's interesting how more modern day artists don't use a 12 string, maybe it'd help with their popularity too if they did.

I can’t believe this is even a topic of conversation. Ridiculous!

This is just fan service for Taylor swift fans. I love her personally and like her professionally but the truth is she's a technical disaster on guitar. She is incredibly heavy-handed with her right hand and her strumming is clumsy and unrefined sounding. She really needs to work on creating more finesse with that right hand. Olivia Rodrigo, who I like even more, also really has to work on her technical guitar playing. It makes an enormous difference that you might not notice until you hear a capable guitarist. Nevertheless, I've got enormous respect for taylor.

Play your 12 string next to Taylor. You lose!!!! Then the banjo, electric guitar and mandolin, then we’ll rate you.

Thanks for your comment! In all fairness, 6 and 12 string guitars aren't all that different. Banjo a little more so (depending on what tuning you play in) and mandolin, again slightly different, it's tuned the same as a Violin or you might view it as an upside down guitar with regard to fretboard patterns. Bit of a sweeping statement but it rings true; the majority of professional guitar players can jump from 6 to 12 strings relatively easily.

So, she gets points for the lighting and the backup vocalist and wow, she can play electric AND acoustic. She is good! Seriously, why can’t we just acknowledge she’s capable but nothing more as a guitarist. Enormously popular obviously and deserves kudos for that but as far as her playing, especially for as long as she’s played, just kinda average.

I understand your point. However, I try to view things from a compassionate guitar teacher's perspective. If I had a student who went on to do what she's done, I'd be immensely proud. Sure, she's not Steve Vai, Tim Henson or Tommy Emanuel but she doesn't need to be. She's good at being her. Also, I'd rather she be getting the guitar infront of millions of people, potentially encouraging them to play than not.

Nice video! I’ve been a fan since 2007ish and I’m always asking for my partners opinions on particular songs since he’s always a guitarist! Although it was second hand embarrassing when she showed up on stage on her tour with 162737632883 guitarists 🙈🙈🙈 all my mates who also play guitar were laughing. She’s no Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton but still good, better than me atm 😂 hope the swifties don’t give you any hassle!

Well, another way of looking at that is that she's keeping those guitarists in work with decent pay! And that's true, sure, she's no Hendrix but she's good at using it to compliment her songs and getting the guitar in front of people, maintaining it's popularity.

I think she's the best guitar player that ever lived and I also think she puts Beethoven to shame with her piano playing
