You've got a point there. During his early work he was a legit action hero. Now I'm older, I regard every movie as a comedy. While at the same time he turned into a parody of himself. I doubt that's deliberate, but it's indeed entertaining nonetheless.

The hate comes from the fact that he is, as OMNI-1/137 rightly points out, a narcissistic douche bag. I have never heard anyone who has worked closely with him say anything nice about him. He is verbally abusive to men, verbally and physically abusive to women - even his own wives - and is basically a walking bell-end. Some time ago, he began to believe his own press, and even if Aikido weren't the least threatening martial art out there, he is 70 years old and so far past his prime that he can't even see there from here and yet struts (waddles) around like he's King Shit. World champion narcissistic douche bag. You are correct though that he is quite entertaining -- I never get tired of laughing at him.

Lots of Seagal hate here, people commenting on his weight... they don't seem to get the concept that he's old now and enjoying his life, he's no longer intensively training himself or competing at a professional level. He's basically doing what he wants. This stage in his life shouldn't be compared with his youth and young adult life, when he could have potentially beaten anyone It's just impossible to know though as it was a different era. I think he'd have given anyone from his era a run for their money.

A friend of mine who is a bodyguard told me he worked for Seagal twice. Last time was back in 2010, a jerk jumped off the security rubbon and tried to sucker punch him in the neck, as the bodyguards were too far ahead he had like 2 seconds to react, and he did. He swept the guy like it was a sugar sculpture and gently asked him to take his meds. My bodyguard friend is a former 2 times kickboxing champion and he said he still would fear to fight against him.

And to the person who said that he taught the front kick which is the first kick in every martial art, to them I say that the application of the technique is what he taught. Many people teach the same techniques but weather they can teach and apply them correctly or not defines them as a martial artist and sensei.
