The musical technique you were all referring to- where the score matches and punctuates the flow of the coasters' movements- is a modern application of Madrigalism, a.k.a word painting. It's not used much in the postmodern era, as audiences find it too on-the-nose, but it's highly effective when done well. It's really cool that all of you noted and enjoyed its use in scoring Space Mountain!

Skeleton-jokes aside, im actually rewatching this and I feel like Ryan (who is an examplary host at the best of times) has REALLY dialed it up; its good to know he's as much of a fan of Defunctland as the average viewer. Yeah dude, I saw those aside looks to make sure senpai approves. Byron is always cool as a cucumber and gives big teacher vibes. You manage to be both emotive and unflappable. I feel like you should be a professor, haha. Kevin!!! God Defunctland has been formative (well, as formative as something you discover in your mid-twenties can be). Its great to see you and to hear you evoke such an old-hat expertise. Theres nothing performative or even especially ostentatious about your stuff; its always keen and certain and accelerated. That really shines even here, with your really casual expertise. You're a swell guest, and I envy people who snag you because you do a very good job of matching the tone while still holding your own. Okay, gushing aside. I think youre all the bee's knees and this ep brought me a helluva lot of joy. I subscribed three days ago and these are the treats that keep me going!

According to Google, the first completely enclosed roller coaster was called the Twister and was built in 1925. Space Mountain was it says “one of the first indoor roller coasters and was the first indoor roller coaster where riders were in total darkness for the entire length of the ride.”

Fun fact, the Monopoly Man has never had a monocle. The monocle or eyeglass (an old-fashioned form of glasses), has become synonymous with Mr. Monopoly, and yet he never actually wore one. He was never officially depicted with a monocle.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who listens to music on the ride. “Take My Breath” by the Weekend fits perfectly when played at the right time. I forgot what time you need to press play, but I edited a version where the buildup to the start of him singing is from the beginning of the ride to the end of the last lift hill. The main melody where he says “take my breath” is played at the largest drop midway during the ride after Zone 10 and the cut off of the song is when you exit the turn into the station. It’s hard to describe without actually listening to it

37:58 As someone who works maintenance at a different theme park: Usually the lighting on a ride and the queue (at least where I work) is maintained by the same team that does the actual electrical components of the ride. So usually they are too busy with more important things like sensors and motors to change out non-critical lights.

I was tripping on acid at disneyland this one time, it was just my older sister and I, we were in line for space mountain when the ride broke down. My sis gave me the option to head to another ride or stick it out and wait. We were right in that tight hallway spot and it definitely felt claustrophobic but I chose to stick it out and wait. Luckily the ride was back up and running in no time and we got to ride. Me (being on what I later found out was a double dose of acid) had an awesome time! That ride was amazing! 10/10

These are fun. I enjoy the depth of enjoyment and analysis the guests and hosts have for these attractions. As someone who has spent most of their lives stuck in Ohio, I grew up down the road from Paramount's Kings Island, and had grandparents within driving distance of Cedar Point, and always enjoyed the attractions that had a story along with the ride, though the thrill rides are also great. It's a shame Kings Island lost all its brand tie-ins when Cedar Fair bought it, I feel Ryan would have enjoyed it at its peak.

There were all sorts of gallows rumors flying around the junior high, high schools, and possibly elementary when Space Mountain first opened in Orlando, such as people were getting decapitated who stood up mid-ride and fingers and hands were getting chopped-off when riders stuck their arms out of the vehicle. I suspect these arose because the coaster feels very tight and compact and you CAN touch various elements rather easily, like the walls of the tunnels. I would personally never do the arms-up thing on Space Mountain, as I've seen the lights-on videos and there are girders everywhere, some terrifyingly close to the trains. In some ways, it actually feels less like zipping thru open space and more like being in a claustrophobic mine ride.

Im pretty sure that space mountain was the first computer controlled roller coaster in the world, which I would argue is pretty innovative. ElToroRyan did a great video on it. Also just rode land for the first time and that thing COOKS, there were no breaks for the speed on my ride and the darker area made it harder to anticipate. I have never gotten motion sick on world's but had to sit on a curve for an hour trying not to be sick after lands XD I think it also has the downside of the lapbar being directly in my stomach. I am definitely in the minority here because I think that's a plus for more people that makes it more thrilling.

So fun fact about the Disneyland version; Back before it opened, in January of '77, Disney wanted to get footage for promoting the ride for people who hadn't been to Florida. So ABC sent a crew out with members of the production unions to get a camera in one of the vehicles and run it through the track. They got a crew of 3 people actually on the ride while Cast Members and the rest of the crew and director stayed off. It went off, around the track, and came back to the station... without slowing down. Thankfully they had only put the one ride vehicle in the attraction for this test, but that one vehicle hadn't been slowed down because the breaking system broke and the camera crew went through the ride *again* but faster than the first time. It was still not fixed when the camera crew came back the second time, but they did say over the intercom that they were working on a solution. The solution? They physically cranked the breaks close. So this ride vehicle, now on it's third trip through, was told to brace themselves as they went from nearly 30 mph to stopped in roughly 12 to 15 feet. They DID manage to get footage for the promotion though. Source; both of my parents made the majority of the crew that test ride to get the footage, my dad was riding sitting backwards and holding the frame they juryrigged to sit the camera. 45+ years later, they still refuse to *EVER* get on any version of Space Mountain because of it. They were given shirts that say "I survived Space Mountain" and they're the only ones that I know of where that applies much more gravity to the phrase.
