Definitely want Steve Rogers back. Him dying in the ice is not really a theory I would have chosen. And "Cap. being the father of Peggy's children I'm not buying into either" now with him going back and changing the timeline those children aren't around and other children are instead makes more sense. Like she married the one guy from Agent Carter instead. Yeah Back to the Future explains it much better. MCU just want to confuse and have their own original theory on time travel. Going with alternate timelines make more sense LoL

@@danh2397 I can't recall it being specifically name-dropped, but the fact that a US military presence in Afghanistan has been both shown and referred to in the MCU multiple times seems to infer that the 9-11 attacks happened and the War on Terror was at least occurring until sometime in Phase 1. Though the remarks by John Walker and Lemar Hoskins in TFatWS about their time in Afghanistan makes it sound like it happened more recently than 15 years prior.

Great, now I want a series about Cap living in his alternate timeline.

I love Doug's ideas. We need more Doug. I'm kind of thinking there needs to be a movie or TV show showing Steve return the stones and living his life back in the day.

@@tacojones5666 steve already relief of his duty at the end of Endgame. He sacrificed so much for the benefit of mankind and the world still treat him like shit ever since the civil war incident. It is time he thinks of the dream that he misses thanks to serving for the sake of world peace. He saw the horror if he kept with the old ways through the sacrifice of natasha romanov aka black widow. He has had enough with having to save everyone only to see everyone around him died and suffered. He threw away his ideal of "I could do this all day". In the end he realize he couldnt back when he fought with his younger self. He even tries to take a more stealth aproach to complete the mission instead gunblazing his way like he used too. He was jaded, seen too much and tired to go on like this. He knew if continue he will share the same fates as black widow.

Another supporting scene is when Sam is given the shield from Cap’t, Steve asks “How does it feel?” and Sam says, “Like it’s someone else’s” and Capt says, “It’s not.” Capt isn’t lying because it’s actually Sam’s shield! Boom! Show me some love!!!!

My theory is it's not just the padding. When you're throwing the shield, you control whether it sticks or bounces with subtle shifts in the angle. After all, your dome is a lot less durable than a tree, and Cap is able to bounce his shield off of fools rather than exploding their heads.

What if Steve founds the Time Variance Authority while he is traveling back in time?

I think it's more simple than this. Cap returned the stones and when he got to "the ancient one" she used the time stone to look at all the possible outcomes and she transports him back in time to the original timeline. He changes his name to Jack Monroe and becomes the "Nomad" from the comics.

How is that more simple than Steve just retiring. He knows the troubles that what would happen over the next 70+ years, but in the end they win. He's not trading lives. If he saves or changes anything, Thanos wins.

I agree with him just retiring. I didn't necessarily mean for more movies. I just meant that he could have a place in the main timeline behind the scenes. With a change of identity. If he wanted to do a cameo in other films, set in the past, then he could. Like a wolverine or x men movie in the past. Or chris evans could come back if he wanted to.

or occam's razor - there are two shields. the original (which was frozen with Steve) which he left with Tony in Civil War. This one has the accents around the star. Then there is a second one (Tony's workshop in Iron Man 2) which doesn't have accents around the star. This is the shield that Tony gives Steve in End Game which gets destroyed by Thanos. Steve then goes back in time and gets the original shield from Tony (star w/ accents) and brings it to the present and gives it to Sam.

@@justingritten6183 and that’s where this theory falls apart. That shield would be at the captain America museum. Everyone holds it in such high esteem (literally the narrative of the Falcon and Winter Solider), that the damaged shield would also be on display. Why hide it? Makes no sense.

I would gladly pay AT LEAST five money just to keep getting more of Doug’s goodest theories!

Holy cow, Doug's theory is great and wow I really felt it when he talked about the dogs sent to space that are still up there. So sad ,😥 they would have no idea what was happening and would be so scared and alone and were just left to die up there. RIP dog heroes 🙏

I think the writers are right, because when Steve appears as an old man he doesn't come back through the device, but to me it was implied he was sitting there all along. I think the Russo Brothers came up with the other idea just so it couldn't be much more convoluted.

I'm glad I saw a video that actually address the 2 cap issue. When end game came out it one of the first things I said was if cap goes back to create a new time line it means he's replacing the cap of that branch and leaving him in the ice and stealing his girl. I do like the idea for this time line for other things tho. Cap tries to fix things and like the one comic book line, old cap is director of shield. But if hydra doesn't have a winter soldier they eventually are the ones that find frozen cap and angry having his life stolen is a lot easier to manipulate and brain wash to be the hydra cap

In the movie Spiderman Homecoming, Happy Hogan was loading the cargo jet full of Stark tech near the end of the movie. Happy was on the phone and mentioned “Caps new shield”. In the main time line, two different shields existed during the events of the End Game movie. Of course, one was destroyed by Thanos and the other was safe and sound at Stark Industries. My theory is that this second shield is the one on the Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

I had to rewind it after Doug's planet joke. Couldn't stop laughing. Good dog.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. This makes so much sense and closes so many loopholes. I love it!

When Steve went back in time knew he couldn't interfere with events or they would change the win in the future, so he stayed out of it all. Sometimes doing the right thing is doing nothing at all. Steve is smart enough to know when to stay put. Old Steve could have gone to Wakanda at some point after Civil War when they were friendly with him, and had them make a new one for him to take home until he was ready to pass it off to Sam. Not complicated, and doesn't mess up the timeline.

Frozen cap gets time travelled to another universe to get his own dance, then time travels that universe’s capcicle to another universe for his own dance. I.e. infinite progression of alternate universe peggy dancing.

That’s a good point. I wonder if something bad happened to Sam in the alternate timeline and he never got to be Captain America for long. Thus making Steve travel to the main timeline to give him his shield so that Sam could still fulfill the role.

Happy mentions (in the movie spiderman homecoming) caps "new shield" Tony made a new shield, the same shield that old cap gave Sam

yep. Steve took it from Alt Timeline Sam and let him know he knows what's best for it instead of letting Alt Timeline Sam make that decision.

I always thought the old man Steve is from the future. The super soldier serum would have probably kept him young-ish I think he would have lived past the dangerous parts and then came back to the end game timeline to drop the shield from his new branches future

It would be so cool to see that alternate timeline created by Steve, maybe in an episode of What If…?

Yeah. Where Steve keeps fighting after he saves the universe and is responsible for saving a million plus people over the course of 70+ years only for Thanos to fly to earth with his army and kill half the population eventually. Very Cool.

Fun theory-it's always good to come up with them. Here, it could also be that Steve knew that interfering in major events like 9/11, saving Bucky, etc. would probably lead to us losing to Thanos (permanently) in the end. There was only 1 winning timeline after all. I like the idea of "Roger Stephens" running around in the background for decades helping people in minor ways as Nomad. He probably just got a new shield (or re-forged the 1st one) from Wakanda days before giving it to Sam.

It's almost like all explanations for Steve going into the past utterly destroy the character.

That's why I hated what they did. They wanted to give him his "happily ever after" but didn't think about the repercussions to the rest of the universe. I'm always going to call bullshit on it, but at least the "perfect universe" theory makes it more tolerable.

For one that old guy at the funeral had his face shown not Steve so don’t even and also agents of shield is not cannon it was never said to be part of the mcu

As much as I enjoy it, it means Sam is taking up the shield for the 2nd time. Meaning old man Cap would have an idea of what it meant for a black man to take up the shield. Additionally, getting a life was exactly what Steve wanted to do. Sacrifice vs. Selfishness is what it's all about and I don't think it can be written off as easily. Keep up the awesome work. I like most of it. Just a note: Steve didn't have all of the perfect information. Most of the Hydra side of things was destroyed. He could have easily been working as a "super special" agent. Many things had to happen for them to win in the end. Steve's an old soldier. He knows most victories come at a cost. He was beaten down and ready to step out of the light. He knew Peggy died of cancer, but he never found out that Hydra did it. He thought she died happy, having lived a full life. The statements that she made at the end, fit perfectly. She was reliving his return. Bucky was messed up. The memories of what he did seem to have come back, but they were regularly wiping him and starting over. Who knows if he knew where he was when. That one lab was just one of the labs he was kept in. The shield was broken when he left, and some how he had this version with him when he returned. Where is the broken shield?

Doesn’t make sense that Steve could “cut a deal” with the Wakandans. How would he even make contact with them in the first place? And why would they help him? Prior to King T’Challa, Wakandans would have been very cautious of foreign nations.

a lot can change in 80 years. as far as how would he make contact...i mean...he could just show up. damn good way to make contact. dude shows up knowing all the secrets you're trying to keep hidden, is as strong as your black panther. and genuinely seems like a good guy? stranger things have happened than that guy being listend to.

I think its an interesting theory, but I feel like it would be massively complicated to explain in a movie format, better bet is that he just went back and lived his life with carter and they clip it there. You could possibly see a scenario where in the Loki series where hes meant to clip that alternate timeline where there are 2 caps.

I think it's a little holey as a theory, for the exact same reasons mentioned by your best friend, but I really like having it in my mind to think about when I get anxiety about the subject. Basically you gave me some peace of mind, thank you!

Isn't there still the plothole of Prime Steve Rogers taking the place of Alternate Timeline Steve Rogers? Or are you saying Prime Steve did a Rick and Morty where he found a timeline where the Alternate Timeline Steve died?

The only scenario I can see that results in Prime Steve behaving in character throughout and not leaving Alternate Timeline Steve out to dry is Alternate Timeline Steve dying in the plane crash and Prime Steve taking his place, i.e. pulling a Rick and Morty. It's still technically Prime Steve stealing another Steve's Peggy, but it's an easier pill to swallow in my opinion.

Do we know for sure that they would have been able to locate and safely defrost the Stevecicle in the 40s? I know that the Super Sauce was PART of the reason he survived being frozen, but we only see him waking up after SHIELD thawed him and not what other hoops they jumped through. There could definitely be more to it than pointing a hairdryer at him and hoping for the best. Or maybe they formed a throuple. After all, Steve did express appreciation for his younger self's ass during Endgame.

Steve traveled to the past and didn't change anything. He didn't try to change events to prevent more branching realities. The entire plot of the series still happened and he ends up in falcons present but caps future. So he was always meant to travel back in time due to him knowing not to alter the course of events, since they win anyways, and this was the only way for that to occur.

I think you are right - he knows the end, so he can repeat his life and be happy after he has served his purpose in the future. It is a much simpler story and seems to fit the model of MCU.

I’ll be real annoyed if this last episode of FATWS doesn’t reveal the Power Barker to us.

It’s the same shield. Captain America just left the shield for his future self by the bench. Old Man Captain American blew past them when he returned to their timeline, walked over to the bench where he had left the shield and Bucky sent Sam over. Otherwise there would already be a shield at the Captain America museum.

Wow I love this theory, It also makes more sense why Sam would say "It feels like someone else's" and then Old man cap says "It Isn't" BECAUSE ITS ACTUALLY SAM WILSONS FROM ANOTHER TIMELINE! Mind blown.

I like that the series began with Sam believing that he wasn't worthy of the shield and the world telling him it wasn't worthy of him and he seems to now believe that the truth is somewhere in the middle.

ok, this is my new headcanon, I hope Bucky never says anything that goes against this

I like theory too, the only problem is that the ancient one & Banner stated that once the stones are returned, then the branched timeline becomes the prime one again. Unless Loki is the one who created the alternative timeline for Cap. (by stealing the tessaract) 🤷

Doug has some excellent ideas!! I really like this shield theory, all except the Steve on ice problem 😏

I been preaching the perfect timeline for forever. He is Steve Roger's ffs, he would never let buck suffer for 70 years just cuz "in the end I'll save him", and would never let hydra infiltrate shield either, and so many other things.

I am finally glad that someone is talking about the shield differences. Marvel could have easily made the shield that Steve gave to Sam identical to the one he used in his fight with Thanos (and of course in all of the previous movies). However, they did not. No explanation has been given for this, but it must have some significance. (The only alternative I can think of is a lazy propmaster on the Endgame movie.) I don't think the "shield belongs to an alternate Sam" theory is necessarily correct. But I think it is better than the Marcus McFeeley explanation which seems to circumvent the Marvel time travel explanation. As far as Steve is concerned, I think he appeared to Peggy after his alternate self had the plane crash. He lived out his life with Peggy and then chose to go back to his original timeline just as his other self went to put the stones back where they came from. As for the shield differences, these are alternate timelines we are dealing with. So the design differences might just simply be stylistic on the part of the designers.

The ancient one wasn't talking about creating branches in time, those were already created by traveling through time. she was talking about making those branches more dangerous without all the stones to protect them........

I love the convoluted things people go through in order to try to force something to fit a theory they prefer.

I honestly think all four theories sounded very interesting to me.

I think what the writer intended was that it only makes a branch timeline if a infinity stone is taken from its place. (as the ancient one explained they create the flow of time). So if someone travel time without stone its not branching out he is just traveling along his own timeline. Thats how cap returned the stones to fix all branches and then just travel along his own timeline to get old with peggy. This explain a lot of things: 1st how the avengers hop between time without creating branches even though they messed a lot of stuff. When cap returned he did not fix all the cars they broke or all the ppl they lied to. He just returned stones. 2nd how loki is creating a branch timeline, cause he was carrying a infinite stone out of its position on a possible past (the NY attack ). 3rd. There should be a alternate dark branch with no Thanos but there is not, because he didnt time travel with a stone. he just hopped to his future which was undone when cap returned the stones.

I really appreciate Doug’s commentary & I think he should write up a treatment to pitch to Fiege. Would 100% watch dogs saving dogs in space.

Og Steve went back left himself in that timeline he was frozen but I think he and peggy had to have a secret life... to not interfere with frozen Steve's future

i actually think the shield is a refurbished version of the shield that Cap dropped in Captain America: The Winter Soldier
