Why We Sleep is out now: amzn.to/2JugGKV
Sleep is one of the most important aspects of our life, health and longevity and yet it is increasingly neglected in twenty-first-century society, with devastating consequences: every major disease in the developed world - Alzheimer's, cancer, obesity, diabetes - has very strong causal links to deficient sleep.
In this book, the first of its kind written by a scientific expert, Professor Matthew Walker explores twenty years of cutting-edge research to solve the mystery of why sleep matters. Looking at creatures from across the animal kingdom as well as major human studies, Why We Sleep delves into everything from what really happens during REM sleep to how caffeine and alcohol affect sleep and why our sleep patterns change across a lifetime, transforming our appreciation of the extraordinary phenomenon that safeguards our existence.

Melatonin completely changed my life. I have had brain fog - forgetting names and other mental problems for the last few years years so much so I was beginnng to despair. I was waking after each 90 min sleep cycle at night several times - then not being able to get to sleep (I know a lot of this is age related - a lot of my 30s 40s and 50s were sleep deprived because I pushed myself to the limit with v long days (teaching)). Then I managed to get hold of 2 mg slow release Melatonin tabs and I still wake at night but I fall back to sleep easily. my memory has come back and I sleep more soudly and I certainly now remember my dreams. It has helped me to establish a much better sleep routine and I feel the best I've felt in years. I do take beta blockers for my heart and the combo doesn't seem to give me any ill effects - in fact I get a very calming sophorific effect and can feel really chilled. Being able to build the routine has been the main thing. I can now remember names and dates much more efficiently. There's been a complete sea change. I was very, very skeptical about taking any medication especially Melatonin but it has been a complete tranformation. Rarely am I impressed by medication but this really is so marked a change it cannot be down to a placebo effect especially if I doubted it would work.

Took it on and off dozens of times during the last few years. It certainly helps falling asleep, but for me I would say I end up being maybe 25% or worse less sharp and energetic the following day. And it will be much worse if I don't sleep for at least 9 hours. The negative effects were consistent and strong enough for me to be sure that it's not an accident or an illusion. Maybe it's because all the different brands I took were all crap. Or maybe I overdosed, as he said. Anyway, I will now avoid it unless I need to drastically reset my sleep schedule. And I'll never take it more than 1 or 2 nights in a row.

For some hormones, if there's a regular exogenous source (e.g. testosterone), then the own body production drops. Is there a similar effect with Melatonin? If so, then we should not make it regular, but a "as needed" situation. Anyone know? I ask this because - besides sleep - it seems Melatonin is also a good antioxidant and de-toxifier, and is produced in the cells when there's infrared (heat) radiation. So sitting in the sun for a bit, is both for UV (Vit D) but also IR (Melatonin). Which in turn leads to a question about winters! Maybe we're meant to hibernate, but we overly-clever humans, push the office-work schedules.

It’s handy to take it over a shorter period, maybe 2/3 months to get your sleep schedule and everything balanced, and then coming off it slowly, this was your body is used to your new sleep patterns and can take over once your supplement has run out, taking maybe half of a 5mg dose before bed when you first start, continuing for a couple months and when you start to run out, reduce the dose and let your body take over, hope this makes sense and helps you in any way :)

So my anecdotal advice would be to take it for 2-3 nights max to get your timing right but never for long periods of time or you wont be able to sleep without it.

Everybody (EXCEPT ME) can have 3mg of Melatonin and fall asleep. 5mg didn't work, neither did 10mg or even 20mg. At 20mg it doesn't kick in until MORNING, and then you need a gallon of coffee to wake up. Wide awake at 3am I would give up and take an Ambien (Zolpidem tartrate) or an Ativan (Lorazepam) to fall asleep. The problem with Zolpidem is that it causes memory loss and it makes you forgetful in the daytime. A friend recommended CBD, but I didn't want to flunk drug tests for work and be labeled a marijuana junkie, so I turned her down. Now, I know that CBD doesn't have THC, so you won't get stoned from it, so I'm considering trying it. All these PRESCRIPTION and over the counter sleeping pills like Sominex cause severe losses in short and long term MEMORY, so I avoid them. Any suggestions from anyone would be welcome. Thank you.
