5 Ways To Start Your Therapeutic Journey with Alain De Botton

Ойын-сауық

Alain de Botton believes we are all on our own journey towards recovery. Here he breaks down 5 ways to find a way back to connection and joy. Order your copy of A Therapeutic Journey here: amzn.to/3LU6hLj
The essential guide to mental health from the bestselling author of The School of Life.
This is a book about getting unwell. About losing direction and hope. About imagining that we have let ourselves and everyone down. But it is also a book about getting better. About regaining the thread, rediscovering meaning and finding a way back to connection and joy.
Here, Alain de Botton follows the arc of a mental health journey, from crisis to recuperation; the moments we realize we cannot cope; the acts of selfcare or therapy in which we find respite; and the days we finally reclaim a sense of stability. Written with understanding and kindness, it is both a source of companionship in our loneliest moments - whether it's a relationship breakdown, a career setback or anxiety around the everyday - and a practical guide that will help us find reasons for hope.
We are all on our own journey towards recovery. This book is for anyone ready to understand theirs.

I’m reading a lot of critical comments here about Alain that I think are unfair. I get that he may not have the appropriate credentials to provide therapeutic services, but that doesn’t mean he can’t have great insight into the human condition (e.g., what ails us, what gives life meaning, what makes relationships flourish, etc.). I work in human services and frequently communicate with allied mental health professionals who don’t possess anywhere near as much skill in articulating thought-provoking ideas about mental health and well-being. I don’t think he’s a charlatan selling easy solutions to life’s challenges. He’s simply inviting us to think about things in different ways, and sometimes that’s all it takes to help people course-correct. I’ll speak for myself in saying thank you, Alain, for your wonderful body of work-it’s had a significantly positive impact on my life. Cheers.

Well, I also wasted time and money on those people with so called credentials and they were complete a-holes who couldn’t help me. So may I know why are credentials so important? Is it not more important to find someone like Alain who shows genuine empathy and is able to help us find meaning insights and genuine solutions! Sadly most people just don’t have that level of intelligence to fairly comment on such an important topic but alas, the Dunning Krueger effect is in full effect!

I haven't seen negative comments, but many outstanding people in human history had no "credentials", and demanding those credentials goes to childishness. Leonardo Da Vinci had no considerable educational background, and he was one of the greatest geniuses of mankind.

I couldn’t agree more. Anyone who’s experienced a profound therapeutic journey knows that Alain is speaking from deep personal experience combined with careful thought. This video is the best summary of the therapeutic journey I’ve come across anywhere.

I'm a registered BACP counsellor and Alain de Botton is offering a superb masterclass in psycheducation on some fundamental ideas which are helpful to understanding because they're presented in a concise and articulate way. He expresses himself beautifully, better than some mental health professionals.

I hv worked for 30 plus years in mental health teams …. Seriously… if only people knew that therapists often follow fads, apply bits and pieces of training without deep knowledge and are often running on instinct. They can be good people but there is often something going on with their egos ..

It is spot on what you are saying. It is sad to see though that environments as children we are brought up in isn't as blessed as others or as lucky. I know our lives are what and how we make it, but life is also hard for too many who have not had healthy fundamentals to inspire and build one's future life upon.

Alain offers genuine insight that can help people learn how to deal with their issues if they take the time to do the work. IMy insurance selected so-called "professional" counselors and therapists who provided really bad advice or no advice at all...asking "how does that make you feel?" is not helpful, I'm seeking therapy because I KNOW how I feel and want to learn better coping and self-examination techniques. Those discounting Alain's good advice because he's not a licensed therapist obvious have no understanding of mental health treatment techniques or they would recognize good advice when they hear it.
