I will say top 5, top 3 or top1 CM. Not lm, rm, cdm or cam because i can talk about Beckham, Zidane, Maradona, Pelé, Vieira, Cruyff, Makelele, Figo, Gullit, Kaká, Platini, Nedvéd and more and more amazing players, but I'm not going to start discusion. They were great and Modrić is great. It's debatable. BUT when we are Talking about nominal cm Modrić is in TOP 3(for me top 1). I think my opinion is subjective. I'm Modrić fan and he is one of my favourite players. I remind you that I'm Barcelona fan. So please don't hate. *I'm from Poland and my English isn't very good so i can make some mistakes* 😉🤟

@@arsenalfanrichi Modrić had Rakitić in the national team, too. The most underrated middfielder ever. Underrated in Croatia because of Modrić, underrated in Barcelona because of Iniesta & Busquets. Yes Modrić had great players around him in Real and the national team. But still he is part of the top 3 middfields i ever watched (since the 80s). Watch Spain Croatia 2012 at the Euro in Gdansk. Modrić/ Rakitić vs Xavi/Iniesta/Busquets. That match was Modrić's ticket to Real.

Luka is just different. There is no other midfield player as complete in the history of football. He's not an attacking mid but can create or score if needed. He's not a DMC but he can track back, mark and take the ball away if needed. He's not a regista but he can send pinpoint passes if needed and ALWAYS sends the ball forward. He's not a Box to Box but can run the entire field in the 95th at 36 years old if needed. Zidane, Iniesta, Xavi and Pirlo are better than he is at their specialty but Luka can do it all at a close enough level and run the tempo of a game better than any of them. He's just special.

I have never seen such a complete midfielder ever. Great in defense, great in scoring, great in assist, great pace and workrate, great dribbling, great everything. Who was like that ever? I mean Xavi and Iniesta were good, but not good in defense, not great pace and physiques but they worked well in that setup. Zidane Xavi Iniesta Gerrard , all great middfielders, But No one has 3peat in CL. That’s dinasty. Luka has 5 Champions Leagues. In Luka’s age those guys were done and looked for MLS or even worse China and Quatar, Luka just won La Liga and CL as RM number 10 and signed a new contract. Xavi Iniesta Zidane, maybe seedorf or pirlo, can be compared. There are a lot of good players but Luka is greatness, like Bird Magic Jordan, That’s something else.

For me he is the greatest midfielder of all time. It’s my opinion, and that’s it. He will forever remain the ONLY player that has won Balon D’or during Messi & Ronaldo’s reign. But regardless of trophies. The playing style that he has developed in Real Madrid will forever be a part of history. He is a number 10, but he is also an 8 and a 6 if need be. It will take a very very long time for new midfielders to get close to his level, both mentally and physically. Man’s 37 and still smashing it, playing almost every game in the calendar. Unreal.

@@wateo1782 modric was not consistently top 3 midfielders in the world until around 2014. He was world class I'm 08, but lost form a bit before joining madrid. Iniesta and xavi have consistency comparable to him. I understand if you think modric is better but imo he's around 3-5 best of all time.

Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane. For all three, Modric was the piece that completed their midfield.

Look, I'm a Croat myself, but sometimes it's hard to give someone the title of THE BEST EVER in his position. Why? If you look the history in only last 50 years they would have been at least 30-40 big names central middle fields who all gave their own things to the game. There are so many flavours of the CM position players that its hard to even compare.

Modrić's resume as a midfielder is better than any of the 'goat' midfielders. You don't even have to talk about his technique, defending and influence. I'm a madrid fan, I watch his games everyweek. And personally I believe that the other 3 spots as far as top 5s go are filled by Xavi, Iniesta and Platini. Zidane wasn't the best. Performances like the quarter final against Brazil in 2006 are the only reason why he even should be featured in a top 10. He was inconsistent. And Xavi and Iniesta were better than Modric. Together definetely, but I also think individually. Casemiro and Kroos also play a part in why he is so great for Real. Regardless he is probably the 2nd best midfielder in the world next to KDB. And that at 37!! Truly remarkable

He has so many similarities with another greatness: Johan Cruijff! Their movements, dribbels, overview and especially their touch with the outside of the foot is never seen.

He’s an top player. Truly special because many talented players don’t train too hard. Many hard working players lack talent but work down to their bones. Modric is a pure talent-that also works like no other.

Denmark - Croatia 0:1 , 10 June 2022. First half total domination of excellent Danish team . Second half a little troll ( as Danish media called him after game but not with bad intent ) named Luka Modric ( only 36 years old) came in and the game completely changed. No answers from Danish side for little troll magic. Watch the game it if you can to see why is Modric definetely in top 10 in history. Just wish that he played with Iniesta and Xavi because I believe that opposition team would not know what a possession of a ball is.

No hate to any great midfielder,but he is the most complete midfielder ever to play football.He can be a playmaker,can make great short passes in tight spaces,can make great long passes, dribbling,ball control,track back,defend,attack,score long range goals has unending stamina,almost won every individual and team trophy except the European golden boot(almost impossible to win it as a midfielder) and World cup(almost won it). Imo modric is the most complete central midfielder in history because zidane,xavi,iniesta were never a threat at defence against their opponents they were moreover ball carrying and play making CMs. And in case of Zidane he was an attacking midfielder so there is no comparison with him. @@okocha7914 I'm sorry but that's bogus. Xavi wouldn't be as effective if not in a tiki taka system. He also lacks pace, and physicality, and isn't a good defender. Also remember that he had Messi, Iniesta, and Busquets near him. Not denying that Real Madrid didn't have a stellar setup either, but Iniesta is considered one of the all-time greats. Busquets, by many, is considered one of the best DM's and Messi... well he's considered to be the G.O.A.T. Having this caliber around you hides your deficiencies and will naturally make you look better. He is still one of the all-time greats, but Luka literally does not have a weakness. He is a playmaker, can defend, has excellent passing skills, both long and short range, can make dangerous dribbles, is one of the most press resistant players of all time, and has a tremendous work rate. In addition to all of this, his longevity should not be overlooked. For taking such physical abuse over the years, he has held up and played at a world class level all these years. Xavi Very close, Xavi and Iniesta won everything a footballer can win besides the Ballon d'Oro, but they also had one of the best international teams ever to help them win International trophies. @@t-778 That is absolutely false.Croatia had a fantastic midfield,decent attack and pretty bad defense.They were not favorites in 2018 nor 2022,they just surprised everyone.If anyone had the best international team it was Xavi and Iniesta.

Ronaldos EGO inflation has ultimately been COLLAPSED by the WC in Qatar... Anyone who KNOWS football knows Messi is on a different REALITY to Ronaldo(let alone any other of this generation)...i believe it was the most FORCED debate in history.. The PROOF of this is "expected goals" stats and "expected assists" and MESSI just blows every other player out the water(including Ronaldo who has exceptional stats). It was obvious to anyone who knows football the GOAL of that Madrid team was to put it on a PLATE for Ronaldo. Thats not to say he wasn't an exceptional player, he was WORLD CLASS and is it wasn't for Messi, Ronaldo would be in the GOAT conversation.. But I saw the likes of MOdric, Caseimero..(as someone who enjoys the TACTICS of a game).. I remember JUVE in the CL final trying to PRESS Caseimero (they assumed he would be the WEAK link)..and Caseimero was cool as a frickin cucumber 🥒🥒. His composure won Madrid the CL i.m.o.... Yes ROnaldo scored a fantastic goal, but Madrid dominated the possession and midfield. This was down to the likes of Modric and Caseimero who just kept WINNING and recirculating the ball, probing for weaknesses... Inevitably the likes of ROnaldo would do the business up front. Im glad Modric got the recognition he deserves..as well as Benzema

Modric is probably the best footballer I've seen. "best in history" is a subjective term because there's no way to know what a footballer "could/would/should" have done in another era and team, there's the arguably best within their time/context, but otherwise everything else is speculation

I'm a Brazilian and all the world knows how we are about our players like Pelé it's above of Messi and whatnot, but talking about midfielders, Luka Modric is the best that ever played the game, he has everything, I saw him in the champions league running more than young players here in Brazil, he has everything like defense, drible and pass Luka is the best midfield that I ever saw play and I saw people like Zidane, Pirlo, Xavi, Iniesta, Seedorf and the list goes on, but no one had the longevity and hability that Luka Modric has.

Iniesta: winning goal in the final, created the winning goals in the round of 16 and quarterfinals matches. Won them the game in the group stage with a goal vs Chile. Modric: scored in the Argentina game and scored a penalty in another group stage game and had a corner kick assist in the quarter finals. And missed a penalty in that game and could’ve won it before it went to penalties. Besides that mandzukic, rebic, perisic, kramaric, rakitic scored and assisted all the goals so how the heck are u gonna say he brought them there by himself?

Do i even need to mention Luka playn at world class lvl at 38 while xavi&ini shoved decrease of performance and stopped with serious football at 33 years...and then there is baloon dor... and 5 cl's... and at 2018 became first EVER to combine all 3 prestigius awards. Not leo nor cris managed to do it mostly coz they shared them every year but that dosent make luka's archivement smaller...respect to lampard,gerrard and other legends but their playmaking and controling the game (traits of real midfilder) was nowhere near luka's lvl...

Cant believe people still debate over this. Being midfielder in madrid squad is the most crucial role right now. When you are almost 38 now and Perez still hasnt made a move to get you out of the squad alone gives you the answer of his value and greatness.

He's easily Top 3 central midfielders of all time. His only crime is he was born in a small country named Croatia and not France, Spain or Germany. He is more complete than any other midfielder that has ever put foot on this sports.

Being serious he is probably the best. Find any other midfielder as complete as him. Find a midfielder with the same dribling, control of the ball, so good going out of pressure, passing in long, passing in depth, defending and stealing ball as a specialist. All this crown with 5 champions and with bringing a crazy small Croatia to a Final of the World Cup. Combined with a never seen before longevity. Any other contender to the best midfielder is less complete and also with a far less longevity. He is still in the top 2 best player of Madrid champions of Europe being 36 years old

People don't understand that Xavi and Iniesta will never have that charm and creativity of Luka Modric, just as reading the game and defending capabilities. They were good, because the moment they won everything with Barca and Spain, but not even close individually to Luka. They were good technicians and they are legendary duo but only in the shape of tiki taka and Guardiola's football agenda. I would rather watch Lampard and Gerard, they had more character no matter on trophies.

Well, let's just put it this way. Iniesta is just a year older and he's been playing in Japan for the last 5 seasons. A league that is quality wise similar to some European third divisions. I'm not denying his greatness but there's levels to this, and longevity is extremely important when it comes to these discussions.

@@RedMan-yx2pz They didn't carried their team to the glory of world cup and euros.The whole spain team was full of talents and world class players which includes - casillas,ramos, Puyol,pique,villa,busquets,xabi alonso, etc etc. While coming to modric's croatia, can u tell me name of a single player in that Croatian team who was even in top 5 in the world in their respective positions??. Just go and watch all those matches of croatia u will understand how big part modric was for that team to reach the world cup final. Xavi and iniesta were always surrounded by great players and they themselves were also great while in case of modric he never had great players in his national team. If he was playing for spain,french,italy or germany then i think there would not be a debate about who is the greatest midfielder of all time.

@@heheboi1462 but was modric that much better than players like rakitic, perisic, mandzukic, subasic and then you can throw in players like vida, lovren, brozovic who played fantastic and if you look at the knockout stages modric really didn’t do that much offensively and made a lot of mistakes, for example was clueless during the pogba goal in the final, caused the foul trippier scored off of in the semifinal, missed a penalty against Denmark, was poor defensively on the cheryshev goal against Russia. He was really only good in the group stage

In terms of trophies, longevity and achievement, its very difficult to dispute his name among the greatest.

One of the best central midfielders the world has ever seen. It’s impossible to say who is the best ever. But he is certainly right up there. His technique, composure, constant availability and most over his impeccable mind and instincts made him almost unplayable for years. And he is still doing it. Not in the same endless output like in his prime years. But he adapted beautifully to his age and still does what he does best: help his teammates

if there’s a list of top 10 midfielders of all time and modric is on it, no one should be surprised

Maybe try watching football sometime... actually watch the matches Xavi and Iniesta played against him. Barca generally had 70% possession decimated them multiple times.
