This video was super interesting, thank you 😊 i would love to hear more about Lilith - I first heard of her as the rebellious first wife of Adam, recently someone on a Pagan group I'm in claimed that Lilith was from a closed Jewish tradition and so working with her in a Pagan way was cultural appropriation, but it seems like the rebellious wife interpretation was also based on cultural borrowing! I love Lilith as a patriarchy busting feminist figure, it would be great to hear about her modern re-imaginings.

Lilith started as a goddess in Sumer and is depicted as such in the Burney Relief according to Thorkild Jacobsen. So after she had some bad press for a few millennia she has returned to her rightful place in this one. More on Lilith in the modern age would be most welcome in a future video.

That's not accurate. Lilith never was a goddess, she always been a demon and never had any cult!!! She had bad press cause she was linked to kill babies for jews. Worshipping her is pretty a "new" practice ☺️❤️

First, I'd like to say how much I appreciate an actual educated approach to the occult. I've seen hundreds of hours of KZread videos and often just come away with anecdotal opinions or worse yet, someone's personal "gnosis" which often revolves around a demon telling them how special and important they are, lol. Recently, I started asking myself: what did I learn from this video? It was then that I realized that much of the time,the answer was nothing. Absolutely nothing. That's fine sometimes but as a witch, I have so much actual knowledge I need to learn and that is where I want to focus my time. So, thank you again for providing legitimate academic material on this subject. Now, on to my question. Who is the original Infernal/dark Feminine? For example, there is Lilith, Inanna, Ishtar, Lamashtu, Hecate... As you know, both Lilith and Inanna have been attributed to the ancient Burney Relief with some disagreement. There is so much syncratism that it's frustrating trying to get to the source, the origins. Biblical references are useless. That is modern pulp fiction as far I'm concerned. I want the source - thousands of years before the desert religions came into being. Would love to know your thoughts on this. Also, a video going deep on Hecate in general would be fantastic. Thanks again for what you do. I am a new subscriber and look forward to your content.

Lovely video. I know most of this information. I would love a follow up video. As a pagan and occultist I work a lot with Lilith. Mostly Qabalistic interpretation of her, but I'm sure I don't know every ditail of what was written on her over time. So it's always exciting to learn something new about her that I might have missed or overlooked.

Great video! I especially liked how you connected Lilith with the demoness traditions in surrounding cultures, and the lamia in particular. I’m curious, though, about how popular the first wife interpretation of Lilith really was for the general Jewish and Christian populations, or if it largely just existed in academic/rabbinic circles. Growing up in a presbyterian church, I had never heard that, or the issue with the two creation stories, until I saw a documentary about it on the history channel when I was in high school. Yes, to more Lilith videos. A good reference and starting point for your favourite demons in the bible can be the DDD - Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible, 2nd rev edition. Karel van der Toorn, Bob Becking, Pieter W van der Horst, Brill / Eerdmans, 1999.

I could not find the de Gruyter article you 2018 reference came from. But, I found several similar and , as you point out: "The creatures of the desert will encounter jackals And the hairy goat will call to its kind; Indeed, Lilith (night demon) will settle there And find herself a place of rest" - Isaiah 34:14 in the Darby Bible Translation and the Amplified Bible. The International Standard Version uses the plural "Liliths" . Of course, most translations say, "the night monster" or simply "the night owl". The Catholic Douay-Rheims Bible reads: "the lamia lain down, and found rest for herself". Lamia being a female bodied monster. Satyr (I couldn't find centaur) and goat and "hairy one" are terms often mentioned, but not in place of Lilith. She is an owl, apart from the owl or a monster. Satyr and goat are swapped out with each other and are always mentioned along with Lilith. Please post more like this, I love it!

Excellent video! I've often seen Lilith and other female mythical/ folkloric beings described as having bird feet or being part bird. If I wanted to do more research on the history and origins of that motif where might I start looking? It's a weirdly specific question pertaining to a project I'm working on and I'm not really sure where to go looking.

One thing to be noted is people always ask for more about Her, even I still do and will always, BUT; You can ask Her yourself - Ask Her as a friend/lover. Make yourself something She is interested in. Don't do a Goetic evocation, buy a rosĕ and She will tell you if She wants a sip, give Her flowers etc. Treat Her like a beloved human being, and, maybe, a relationship will form.

I remember when I heard about Lilith as a teen and the first wife of Adam thing in a TV series. Having being born in a practicing christian family and having already read the Genesis and never heard of her from neither my family, nor the church and not even the Bible itself I really didn't understood where it was comming from.

Its not 2 different stories. Virtually all scholars agree that the 1st part is a general statement in the creation, the 2nd part is a deeper detail explanation of creation. This style of writing has been done for thousands of years even in modern novels.

Dr. Angela, when and how did Lilith enter the popular imagination from Talmudic / apocryphal sources? "The Adam" which you mentioned.... same as the Adam Kadmon of Kabbalah? Just checked Isaiah 34:14 in the only Bible I have (so-called King James) and refers to a "satyr" in verse in which you placed Lilith. Is Lilith explicitly named in the Vulgate? Thanks for providing citations, making relations with librarians much smoother!

I'm not sure about the origins of Lilith but I was once asked to find out which Demon was always hanging around a lady. She wanted to know so that she could engage with it in a more meaningful way (I work with Demons myself so this lady approached me based on other things I had done). She thought it might be Hecate but I discovered it was Lilith. Long story short, her life has transformed since she began engaging with Lilith to the point where her life and she herself are unrecognizable now - in a very positive way. I loved your remarks about difficulty translating Semitic languages to European ones. That's completely true. The word translated to "Rib" actually translates to "spine" like on a cactus. Consider though that all other primates and mammals have a spine bone in the penis. It's unique that human men don't have one and thus have to reach a certain emotional condition to impregnate a woman. The narrative can make sense as a comment on what distinguishes humans from animals.

She's mentioned many, many times in The Zohar. This is where we understand לילית to be the first wife of אדם. She is Night and is the female aspect of the evil inclination, and she is much more terrifying than the male aspect. Where the serpent is an aspect of the male, hers is the scorpion.

As everything was passed orally until the exile into Babylon, we are relying on word of mouth for hundreds of years before any scribes, individuals who were authoring any stories that would become part of the Torah and Tannack. I'm not surprised that Lilith character is vague and the result of Rabbinic debate.

I have a video idea you could think about. In the Bible the urim and thummim, and casting lots are used to divine the will of God. Could you do a video on such magic practices?

The Phoenician Lilith the Owl footed goddess has been suggested to be an old PIE diety.

Addition…. The original story upon its retelling over time was in an oral tradition was subject t9 changes …and as cultural exchanges of stories in a retelling and reinterpretation from one language to another meant further changes …assuming the original event which fuelled these myths was in time forgotten but is a Template upon which through retelling was embellished ..of course I hav3 no proof of this just my attempts to make human an otherwise totally unreal story as handed down from before th3 late Bronze Age collapse

If I remember well something that I read long ago, in the Talmud God told Lilith to submit to Adam and she replied something like: "when pigs will fly." Therefore God sent three angels (notice: 3! an angel was supposed to be the panzerdivision of God's arsenal) to subdue/capture/punish her. Their names were something like Savi, Sansavi, Semangelef (more or less. Like everything in the Talmud, their names were supposed to have a special meaning but I have no clue what it is). Lilith escaped to or was banished to the moon. And that is supposed to be the reason why women's menstrual periods are the same as Moon's cycle. Am I remotely correct?

I got curious deeper now. And I read my bible, in Indonesian language(Bahasa), in Yesaya(Isaiah) 34:14, it called Hantu Malam. Hantu=ghost, malam = night. But in verse 15, it called Ular Pohon. Ular =snake, pohon = tree. I'm confused now. 😂😅 But still I wanna know more about this Lilith. 😄

In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Lillith builds a nest in the top of Inanna favorite tree.

Lilith was the first wife of Adam but didnt wont to bare chikdren or pleassure adam and Eve did became his child baring wife. Eve was tempted by Lilith the serpent in the garden of eden.

I wonder if geneticists chose to label the earliest human YDNA A and the progenitor of all human MtDNA L0 after Adam and Lilith. L0 is located in South Africa, however and A is generally thought to have occurred in West Africa sometime later. Considering that all the Biblical action takes place around Mesopotamia, clearly Adam and Eve weren't in fact the first humans, as the Bible suggests. It does, however make it much more plausible that they lived 6000 years ago

Litlith is another human principality creation. She is more an esoteric belief system of a forgotten culture, than a literal being. However given a spirit with her power may have existed pre flood, humans channeling their psychic ability to connect and with spirits of the earth, as well as other astrals, could have conjured Her. There is a sect that believes she was a Nephalem, but this train of thought can sometimes bridge into nationalism, so be aware. The Key of Solomon, and the Lesser Key, address these type of manifestations. Sounds ludicrous, but how is believing in these ideas any different than Christian of Hindu beliefs?

Very interesting. One pointer on de Gruyter. That is a Dutch or Flemish name. Your pronunciation was not quite right. If you have google translate speak the word ruiter in Dutch, you will hear the vowel sound for ui or uy, which is just an old way to write it. The G is also different in Dutch or Flemish. Again, have google speak ‘Goed’ in Dutch. You’ll get it right quickly, and hopefully wonder about some of the weirdnesses of languages. Greetings from the Netherlands!

In the Genesis narrative, "Adam" was the name of both the man and the woman - Ish and Isha - the woman was not named Eve by Yahweh, but by Ish, the man. And since in the same place it says that God created Adam in the image of God, that means that God is both male and female. One of the earliest names of God was El Shaddai, The Great Breasty One, an image of maternal provision and nurturing...

I'm confused, does anyone argue Lilith was in the Bible (Christian) or are you using a different meaning of Bible? Everyone says she's from Hebrew texts, not Christian. "The Bible" is a term usually used for Christianized Hebrew texts.

I also thought that the video was interesting and I think that you are very beautiful.

I always knew the story of Lilith being first wife of Adam but wanted to be equal to him. Adam complained about this and she was banished from Eden by angels before Eve came along. As she wandered the Earth from thereafter she became a demon who would steal children and eat the and would seduce men. She could change her appearance at will but was a scary figure in her normal appearance. I don’t really remember now where I got this story from but that’s what I remember. Love ya Angela❤️
