Lilith: The First Woman? (Biblical Stories Explained)

Ойын-сауық

While Lilith only appears once in some translations of the bible in Isaiah, Jewish interpretation of the biblical creation of man leads us to look at Lilith - the rebellious and unyielding woman who defied both Adam and God.

For Lilith, it had to do with power, than just being on top. You have to understand the context. She was attacking his role as MAN, the leader of the family unit. Woman have always been subject to man. Women today don't like that. For men, it has nothing to do with power and everything to do with responsibility. Men aren't perfect and neither are the other half. People need to unplug their butts by pulling their heads out. Then, maybe you'd start getting some common sense.

In a mythology class in university, our professor asked the class if anyone knew who Lilith was. This was before the internet, so only a few students raised their hands. He then asked, "How many of you are Catholic?" The same people raised their hands. He explained that Catholics study the Apocrypha and thus know about Lilith, but most Protestants never read beyond the heavily-edited King James version and the "approved" books, so they've never heard of Adam's first wife. Also fun fact: the Book of Esther only made it into the final cut of the Bible by one vote at the Council of Nicaea. The bishops didn't like that the main character was a woman and the name of God was not used, so they claimed this made the entire book "not inspired." Imagine what other idiotic social and political reasons were given for all the other books cut out of the final draft!

@@nochu9753 I love to tell overzealous misogynists that in the original Hebrew, God is referred to with feminine pronouns. I mean, I could explain the grammar of ancient Hebrew and that it's mostly the Holy Spirit that is consistently addressed as female while Elohim is male, or get technical that the name Yahweh is half female (yah) half male (weh) and God is described as both a "Father" but also a "woman in labor" which emphasizes that God transcends sex and gender... but nah. Let them sputter stupidly on the idea of "God is a woman?!?" 🤣

Genesis 1:1 says, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." Later, in Genesis 2:4, it seems that a second, different story of creation begins. The idea of two differing creation accounts is a common misinterpretation of these two passages which, in fact, describe the same creation event. They do not disagree as to the order in which things were created and do not contradict one another. Genesis 1 describes the "six days of creation" (and a seventh day of rest), Genesis 2 covers only one day of that creation week"the sixth day"and there is no contradiction. In Genesis 2, the author steps back in the temporal sequence to the sixth day, when God made man. In the first chapter, the author of Genesis presents the creation of man on the sixth day as the culmination or high point of creation. Then, in the second chapter, the author gives greater detail regarding the creation of man. There are two primary claims of contradictions between Genesis chapters 1-2. The first is in regard to plant life. Genesis 1:11 records God creating vegetation on the third day. Genesis 2:5 states that prior to the creation of man "no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground." So, which is it? Did God create vegetation on the third day before He created man (Genesis 1), or after He created man (Genesis 2)? The Hebrew words for "vegetation" are different in the two passages. Genesis 1:11 uses a term that refers to vegetation in general. Genesis 2:5 uses a more specific term that refers to vegetation that requires agriculture, i.e., a person to tend it, a gardener. The passages do not contradict. Genesis 1:11 speaks of God creating vegetation, and Genesis 2:5 speaks of God not causing "farmable" vegetation to grow until after He created man. The second claimed contradiction is in regard to animal life. Genesis 1:24-25 records God creating animal life on the sixth day, before He created man. Genesis 2:19, in some translations, seems to record God creating the animals after He had created man. However, a good and plausible translation of Genesis 2:19-20 reads, "Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them, and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field." The text does not say that God created man, then created the animals, and then brought the animals to the man. Rather, the text says, "Now the LORD God had [already] created all the animals." There is no contradiction. On the sixth day, God created the animals, then created man, and then brought the animals to the man, allowing the man to name the animals. By considering the two creation accounts individually and then reconciling them, we see that God describes the sequence of creation in Genesis 1, then clarifies its most important details, especially of the sixth day, in Genesis 2. There is no contradiction here, merely a common literary device describing an event from the general to the specific. Got Questions Ministries

It's a perfect allegory for ancient men warning women to be good little baby makers to burn in hell for eternity. And none of it is surprising because that's what religion is and always had been. Power and manipulation.

@@jamessalvatore7054 I appreciate and agree with your analysis. As would any feminist I know. The key word in your statement was “equally”. That’s all true feminism is: no more, no less. The world doesn’t need to shut women up; it should ask itself why so many men (and governments) don’t want women to be on the same level as men are. They don’t want to give up that legal and societal justification of their privilege. But facing that would shatter their self-image as a “good guy”. A truly decent man. That’s a harsh truth many would rather not face. It’s easier to be a man. And it shouldn’t be. We are ALL humans. Have a lovely day. 🤗

I remember being a small child and talking to God. Knowone told me anything about him, I knew he was in control and he was the one who was going to know if I did wrong. I didn't need a bible to tell me that I was loved and I remember my friends parents took them to bible school and I was so excited that they wanted me to go. When I heard some stories I was thinking that they were lieing about God. Because he was not what they were talking about. I still have the same feeling about things. God loves me and you. He is probably annoyed that you are not trying to talk with him about your questions about the bible. How silly would it be if he only spoke to people back in the day and never did again. It is a little confusing for me sometimes, to know is it God or my consciousness, but when it is something really important and huge thing I need to hear, I know when its God somehow I just know. Its important to build a relationship with him. Its important to share with people your experiences with him. Not just what is read that you are not sure of. The nonbeliever has this bunch of questions and try to talk about contradictions in the bible. That is really important to me because I understand what they are saying but that has not that much to do with true faith in God. God is love, strength, courage, discipline, motivation. And so on you all should and probably do already know that. I love to learn about bible studies I truly hope that some of it is true. I think the things that are left out through history is a shame, I research this stuff alot looking for something else about this situation to help me understand what is real. Always same thing God is love. I'm sorry to be so long winded.

God bless you. “He’s probably annoyed that you are not trying to talk with him about your questions about the bible” hit me like a ton of bricks. I was raised super Christian but as I’ve grown things haven’t made sense to me at all, the condemnation of LGBTQ+, the sanctioning of slavery, racism and misogyny in the bible, if God’s omnipresent then why didn’t he see the snake and future of humanity coming? Wtf are we put on this earth with no training, just an edited book controlled by religious leaders and written only by men? If you’re so forgiving how can you curse entire bloodlines and a whole gender? And it’s lead to a lot of questions, resentments and fear to ask God because s/he’s presented as punitive, petty, judgemental and stubborn. But I’m ok with saying I don’t understand anything about him, the bible or this world but I know in my soul s/he exists and I can actually ask without fear. Obvs to nonbelievers this sounds like BS and that’s fine to each their own but I just thought I’d say that part of your comment sparked a prayer that’s been long overdue.

You should read all religious books from Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism and more importantly read holy books of ''Dera Sacha Sauda'' North Indian Saint name - Saint Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan (Saint MSG). They’re not...it’s like saying “after I grew crops and made a farm, I built the house.” Genesis 2 just goes into detail...which would say “When I built the house, I used wood planks to do it.” This is not a contradiction. The Bible does not say the creation happened simultaneously either...it just says that he created man in his image and dubbed them male & female lol However I do enjoy myths and lore so I will continue to learn about more outside of the eyewitness accounts within the Bible *inb4 someone tries to argue with me lmao*

@@alexcantsleep_ How can they be eyewitness accounts? God supposedly gave ten tablets with ten commandments. There rest was _written_ retrospectively by men with an agenda. Many religions predate Judaism from which it borrowed most of it's mythology and Christianity is just a watered down version, wherein they disobey the first commandment about idolising false gods by ignoring the fact that the character of Christ might very well have been a Messiah, but was in no shape or form their god. They imagine this supposedly omnipotent and omnipresent entity somehow forgot to add on the first tablet _"excluding my son, of course, who will be produced after I've raped a human virgin." There is little chronological sense in anything written in the biblos, as many books have been omitted, because they made the inconsistencies even more glaring. I have various copies of it, even the thirteen separate written books it comprises of, and they sit in my book collection, between fairytales and mythology, where they have rightfully earned their place, along with other religious works.

I'll try not to get long winded here... In Genesis there are two stories, one says that God made everything then made man and woman in His 'image'. Then it goes on to say God created the Garden of Eden and created Adam and Eve. First dissect the word 'image', remember that this is a translation and like many translations there a disparity in the actual meaning. Keeping in mind that every culture has nuances to the words they incorporate which do not have a parallel in the language it is being translated into, there's a deeper meaning. The original Old Hebrew word that is translated as image has a different meaning than what we conceive when we hear the word 'image'. In our vernacular it means a reflection or depiction of someone or something, whereas the original word meant to take something from yourself and create another 'you'. There was no word with the same concept so the closest word/meaning was used. So basically, God created Man and Woman from His essence, imbuing them with god-like powers. These 'godlings' wanted for nothing, everything they wanted they got. What happens when there's no adversity? Stagnation and decadence. Seeing this God creates the Garden of Eden, with a plan, and makes Adam and Lilith to dwell there. But by creating them both from the earth, Lilith has a mind of her own and decides she doesn't want to 'lie beneath' Adam. She rebels and God condemns her to bear hundreds of children each day, dead children who become demons. Why, if God could make someone from nothing does He create Eve from Adam's rib? This is interesting when you break it down. First of all, by doing so several things occur, one of which is it creates certain bond between the two, or ore specifically bonds Eve to Adam. Next is something that we can see today... what happens when someone is blind? They're other senses are heightened, smell, hearing etc. Take this a step further, by creating Eve from Adam, his attributes/traits are changed. By the taking of the rib Adam loses some of his attributes, like patience and nurturing which go to Eve. What Adam has left, things like aggression and a protecting nature are intensified, hence the differences between Men and Women. Side Note: I was privileged to read (have translated for me) a very old bible and there was a line that caught my attention: 'and Adam did awake and looked about, feeling a deep loneliness, and God did appear and asked of Adam "Why are you so sad?" and Adam said he was alone... So God searched the world over and could find Adam no wife suitable' How did Adam know what loneliness is unless he experienced companionship through Lilith? And if he was the only man why did God search for someone to be with him? Because of the bond that now exists between Adam and Eve, God's plan comes into play. He has told Adam not to eat of the Tree of Knowledge, but not Eve, who is now tempted by, possibly, Lilith appearing as a scaled humanoid (Afterwards God damns this being to live legless and to slither on it's belly and Lilith is often portrayed as having a snakes body) Eve convinces Adam to eat the fruit, Adam, who was told not to commit the Original Sin, not Eve, who was not told not to eat the fruit but only knew it as something Adam told her not to do. While there is some debate as what the Knowledge was, in essence it took away Adams god-power and gave him the knowledge of being mortal. When Cain was banished he joined the 'godlings' and married into them, introducing mortality, and lack of power into their bloodline. God was trying to 'weed' out the godliness from the race. This brings up all the long list of 'begats' which shows a direct lineage from Adam to Noah, representing mortality. Think of this as a breeding program to water down the god powers and gives way for the giants/sons of Angels, the Nephilim as being possibly the original people. By wiping out the world by way of the Flood God is reducing Man to his mortal state. I might offer that like most breeding programs there are always throwbacks, if you breed all white horses you will see some are born as roan or bay, and this explains the possibility of some having ESP or the such to some degree.

You'd have to find translations for about 500 sacred ancient Hebrew and Aramaic texts to begin to really explore the answer to that question, and you would have to study them, and rip them apart, letter by letter, and word by word. You'd need to be fluent in those languages, too, because a lot of the translations are lousy.

God saw Lillith was too much for him so he gave Adam someone that he could handle. Just like today there are some men who can handle strong women then there's them who have to find them an Eve who's just going to disobey him n eat the apple anyway. To each their own.

There are legends that Adam had a wife before Eve who was named Lilith, but this is not found in the Bible. The legends vary significantly, but they all essentially agree that Lilith left Adam because she did not want to submit to him. According to the legends, Lilith was an evil, wicked woman who committed adultery with Satan and produced a race of evil creatures. None of this is true. There is no biblical basis whatsoever for these concepts. There is no one in the Bible named Lilith. The passage most often pointed to as evidence for Lilith is Isaiah 34:14, which in the NRSV reads, "there too Lilith shall repose." This is a poor translation. Every other major translation of the Bible reads something to the effect of "night creature" or "screech owl." Even if "demon monster named Lilith" was the proper translation of the Hebrew word, Adam is nowhere even hinted at in this passage or its context. Whatever the Lilith was, it is not given any connection whatsoever to Adam or Creation. Another commonly used support for Lilith is the differing Creation accounts in Genesis chapters 1-2. Some claim that the woman in Genesis 1 was Lilith, with the woman in Genesis 2 being Eve. This is completely ludicrous. Rather, Genesis chapter 2 is a "closer look" at the creation of Adam and Eve as recorded in Genesis chapter 1. The Bible specifically says that Adam and Eve were the first human beings ever created (Genesis 1:26-28; 2:18-25). This "Lilith" myth is popular in some radical feminist movements because Lilith is an example of a woman refusing to submit to male headship. While there are myths outside of the Word of God regarding Lilith, her complete absence from Scripture demonstrates that she is nothing more than a myth.

I'm a HUGE mythology fanboy and Really like the stories that crop up around the concept of Lilith. HOWEVER ... I've also studied scripture and can clear up a little confusion regarding Genesis and the creation story. Chapter 1 is a bit of a summary chapter that says what's about to happen. God creates Heaven and Earth and all the animals and man and woman. Then, in chapter 2, the first 3 verses summarize again that God created Heaven and Earth and all the animals and man and woman. The key is the 4th verse, which reads: These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created. Then, starting in verse 5, the creation story starts over from scratch, but in much greater detail. Basically, everything up to Ch2V4 is a "this is what happened", and everything after Ch2V4 is a "...and this is how God did it." So before Ch2V4 it tells us that God created man and woman, then after Ch2V4 it tells us that he did it by first creating man from dust, then pulling a rib from his side to make woman. It's sort of like a story that reads like this: "Bob built a house. He laid a foundation, built some walls, then capped it with a roof." In the story it says that Bob built a house, then it goes on to say he does a bunch of stuff that amounts to building a house. But he didn't build two houses. He just built the one. First, we say he did it, then we say how he does it.

Can you please tell me what the original bible is. The one that hasn't been changed or at least the least changed to fit our culture nowadays? Is it the Quran? Im not religious, but much like mythology, I want to read the bible as another piece of literary work. Your help would be much appreciated!

Yeaowah the original "Bible" is the original language before it was translated into English. It's not been changed rather it's been translated so to really understand it, it's good to look up certain words and phrases in the context of the original language. Just like translating from Spanish to English or Chinese to English. In some instances certain words were translated to the closest word with the most similar meaning in the other languages because an exact match not available. So understanding context and looking up how the word is used and what it means in the original language is best. The Bible is actually a collection of books and history that was added to over years... Not the work of one man. The books were sacred and written in scrolls at that time. Over hundreds of years more history was recorded on more scrolls by historians and prophets and those scrolls were added as a historical record in addition to, not changing the original scrolls. There is a period of approximately 400 years between the last book /scroll of the Old Testament and the writing of the New Testament. The New Testament being the records of Jesus Christ. Look up the Dead Sea scrolls... These original scrolls are in the original language and thousands of years old. They are almost word for word the same as we have today. The original languages the Bible was written in are Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek. I can go on... But that's the gist of it. And I agree that the first chapter of Genesis is an overview and not a separate story. The retelling is just going more in detail, not a different story. I grew up with a Jewish pastor (he converted to Christianity in college after studying both religions) and that was how he taught it as well.

I would recommend picking up a copy of the King James Version of the Bible that is published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It has a lot of really excellent foot notes as far as word translation, context, etc. It has foot note that will even direct you to other scriptures to further clarify concepts. It has a great dictionary, topical guide, and maps the illustrate various routes referenced as well. It's also available in a vast number of languages.

Ben Sira is far from first source about Lilith. Alphabet was written between 7th and 10th century. But Lilith is refereed in Death sea scrolls and On incantation bowls made to "banish Lilith" which are made during the 3rd century and even earlier. There are many indications of Lilith being Part of Judaism since the beginning and to almost all of the Rabbis her exsistance is canonical part of Religion.

Which translation to which you are referring? Isaiah 34:14 - The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and for herself a place of rest. As a matter of fact considering verse 14 doesn't even start the paragraph to what is being explained to try and pull a specific verse out of the Bible would make for a great deal of confusion to whoever is hearing it do to the fact there is nothing to base it on. In chapter 34 it explains the apocalyptic scene taking place in Zion in verse 8 - 17 starting with the downfall of Zion then to explain how the wild beasts including Unicorns, Satyr's, screeching owl, and the great owl are all trying to find rest and eventually do find rest. (I ask for which translation for further research for myself.)

Adam in his egotistic mind said to God to create a new version of Lilith, but this time more stupid...si God made Eve...
