Is It Worth It Growing Tomatoes Outdoors for us?

Growing tomatoes outdoors in Scotland and getting a good harvest of ripe tomatoes seems like a dream most of us can't achieve, but I learned something last year that is a game changer for this.
Let's talk about how the tomatoes you choose to grow make a difference and not in the way you think.

Last year I grew ~30kg tomatoes outdoor in Belfast in rainy Northern Ireland, 4 plant were 'beefstakes' (Green Moldovan, Black Krim) reaching 600g per fruit and was really rainy last July. Managed to save a lot from blight. This year I noticed my plants are 3-4 weeks ahead in terms of growth, a good start that might save my harvest from blight. It's totally worth it, some parts of Scotland are not so different from my area.

I grow a determinate variety in my Zone 3 garden at 53 degrees latitude called Siberian from seed that came from my grandmother's house. A Siberian variety is still on the market but I have no idea if it is the same one. I do not reach reliable night temps of >15C until July but have harvested tomatoes within 60 days of planting out my starts early May. This variety will tolerate temps of 7C. It provides that first tomato taste of the season!

Last year I had poor tomato germination, so having potted up, nursed them, I had 4 plants in my plastic pop up plastic ‘greenhouse’, 2 on a sunny windowsill, and the 4 extra survivors in pots in a sheltered area of my Glasgow garden. Great crop, including the outdoors ones which I barely had to water. Lots of green tomatoes at the end, and I actually make green tomato chutney as Christmas gifts for a few friends.

I've made another experiment with my tomatoes last winter. I took the last healthy sideshoot and let it root. During winter the plant were in very little pots with the minimum of water and nutricion. In February I potted them up in 5l pots and still let them inside. Since the 15th of May (our starting season day) they are outside. From the old branches I "harvested" 4 tomatoes and then cut it down and let only the biggest sideshoot as a new main stem. They are blooming weeks before the same variety that I sew in February. So I have an advantage in my growing season. This variety takes a long time to ripen... but its my partners most loved tomatoe. So I tried this and it seems to be a success and the season will be long enough to have a big harvest.

I got left with a few green ones last year, but not enough to make chutney. They didn't do so well indoors.

Great video. I try outdoors tomatoes often on my plot in the North East of England. Usually it's not the temp that knocks them down for me, but it's the dreaded blight that killed them off the last couple of years whilst my green house toms survived longer (and were planted earlier). Got a better crop last year, but still loads of greens. I did try Crimson Crush outdoors last year and had a good crop off these. Most of my outdoors are determinate. This is partly because I can my my own sauce and want to have most the crop ready in a short of time rather than the longer harvest season of indeterminate. It's also partly down to the ease of supporting and maintenance of bush tmatoes over supporting and pruning the vines of the indeterminate - a bunch of stakes and some twine as opposed to a frame totie up the tomatoes as they grow. Another problem I find is that seed vendors in the UK don't put on the days to maturity on a lot of the packets. They often have the blue/green/amber calendar months to highlight when about you can sow and might get a crop but that is pretty vague. It takes alot of research to find out the days to maturity for some - this of course creates it's own problems as my tomato wishlist grows and grows with all the varieties I discover along the way while doing this ;) Anyway - this year I'm not growing outdoors tomatoes due to a mess up with my seedlings so all my toms (including the 3 bush I had left and the 4 Cimson Plum I wanted to try) all fit in one side of my greenhouse.

Ife a concrete slab at the end for the 4 pots with the peppers in. Might try shoehorning a trombone squash inand I should still be able to get in the path in the middle.

The tumbler is producing dozens of flowers, but setting is slow. Really slow. I've been tapping them with an old electric toothbrush every day, but pollination so far is much slower. I must admit it’s very interesting, but my brain is boggled lol I have autism and trying to work that information out is possibly too much, I know when they say the area dates are but the area isn’t my road, there’s about 3-4 roads in a strip area and we get different weather to the roads the other side, we can watch them getting storms while we are not. It’s very strange. So the only way I possibly could working it out would be to record when my first and last frost dates are…. Over a few years. But I also am aware that this means my season is longer so growing things like the sweet million and the other cherry tomatoes which is what my dad and nan like, that’s what I do. I’m not very adventurous like that. I’m so pleased you are tho and I’m really pleased you have found a way to get more all round xx

Thanks for the great video! I’m a first time vegetable gardener. I’m using containers. Just three tomato plants. Funny thing though. My indeterminates are stunted at about a foot tall, and full of blooms. My cherry determinant is twice the size and only a few blooms. It is July 4th. I live in Ontario, Canada, near Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. We’ve had so much rain, it’s a bit ridiculous. I had to bring my two pepper plants into the garage yesterday to try to dry them out a bit. Poor drainage in their pots. I purchased a big garden wagon yesterday to put some of these pots in so I can move them outside into the sun, but then pull them inside when it rains. I might put my tomatoes in the wagon too. I’ll keep you updated on my little experiment.

Determinate tomatoes with a short grow date might work well in short season. Im about 10 degrees south of your latitude. There is another huge difference when we talk sea level as a gal in north California is Z8 but up 5K feet and she has a similar climate as my colder Z5a. She was getting a foot of spring snow while we were warming up. If she moved to the bottom of the mountain she would then be much warmer. I have to say you have a handle on the plant tower. Many put too large of vegetables in and I say stay with baby varieties. Good job!

Great explanation Eli! Indeed it is always best to find out what varieties works well for YOUR garden and not your neighbours down the road! I really love that greenstalk tower and how it is going with your crops! Will you put that in the greenhouse later on in the year, when the weather starts to turn? I also wonder what the day light timing differences are say between you in Scotland and me in London? You might get a bit more morning and evening sun than us during summer but then probably gain/ lose light quicker in spring and autumn? For us atm it is about 04:50 - 21:00, and today it was 20c/11c. For us we grow outside, mainly due to budget. I have just bought some mesh cloth but i think some polytunnel sheeting and/ or shade cloth would help extend our season and protect it from the heat of summer, so maybe something for next year as we just built a new steel frame. We normally take the tomatoes down end of Oct but they have been going in Nov on some years. It all depends on how much rain we get in Oct as it isn't really down to the temps for us. We do sometimes get a cool night or two in Nov but for us, frost comes in late Dec-Jan to Feb - Mar. I wouldn't mind trying to see if i can grow and do two rounds of a determinate tomato. I also want to try a dwarf tomato, indoors this winter. I usually try to over winter some of the suckers from our indeterminates but it would be great to have snacking tomatoes. Anyway, lovely video as always! Take care!

The greenstalk stays outside all year, I just switch to using it for hardy crops for winter like pak choi, mustards etc. Yeah in summer we get a lot more light than you (but less actual sunshine, it’s defused light through cloud) much longer daylight hours. In mid summer time it can still be bright daylight here at 11pm. But yeah in winter it’s dark a lot, usually only lighter between about 8 and 3 in deep winter. Sunrise this morning was 4:30am and sunset will be 9:44pm

@eliandkate it is! Just got all the tomatoes in here. Certainly have lettuce attempting to grow and radishes. All of my cabbage seems to be doing poorly this year but I will try to do a fall round of it. Cucumbers are in and more seeds have been planted. Peppers in and I'll start more. Need to start all of the flowers and some basil and some odds and ends for the summer. I am also testing out a.... Quick new bed method since I needed to expand so just quickly removed the sod and added compost peat etc on the top of it and sort of mounded where I needed to plant. I put the sod in a pile to basically back fill where the new spots are once the grass dies off so just an interesting test. Life is alright nothing special going on at the moment but certainly has been nice to get outside!

My outdoor tomatoes last year were sweeter than the ones in the greenhouse, even though it was the same variety. And July and August were mostly wet - so it could be that the inside ones were watered from the tap instead of rain. This year I'm doing two indeterminate, one outside and one in the greenhouse and 4 determinate, also split in/out although those who will live in the greenhouse have been outside lots since May has been so warm here in Oslo. But all outside space is now taken by all sort of plants that just weeks ago were super tiny and have now exploded in size.

I just learned the other day that there are now dwarf varieties of beefsteak tomatoes, and I am quite excited about that! I can't recall whether I've heard Gardener Scott mention the micro tomatoes before, but a couple of months ago I watch a vid from Self Sufficient Me demonstrating those in an AeroGarden or similar thingy for growing in your house. For the itty bitty tomatoes, I'm not inclined to work that hard to grow them myself since those don't suffer so much from supermarkets. But the big slicing guys? Oh, yes, please! I reckon you probably already know that as long as your tomatoes got the least hint of "straw" (the point where they first begin to change color and ripen), they will eventually ripen in a paper bag on your counter, even if it takes weeks to do it. But you can also chop green tomatoes into stirfries, soups/stews, and even make tomato pie with them if you don't fancy fried green tomatoes (although you might want to add a pinch of sugar if they're still a bit bitter). They also make a nice dill pickle as well.

I'm curious if you've ever tried growing mustard along with your tomatoes? There are studies showing that mustard roots - and especially the plants when chopped & dropped - emit a natural fungicide. I've grown it alongside of some bananas that were having some fungal issues and it seemed to help them. The fungus disappeared anyway. So I'm curious if would work on your tomato blight also? I would expect it to be most effective as a preventative, but it would be interesting to see if transplanting some good-sized mustard plants into a blighted tomato bed would clear up the blight. At any rate, since mustard can grow over the winter, you might at least consider planting your outdoor tomato bed with mustard to overwinter. Just as a precaution (and you can eat the mustard leaves, too.)

This year I am trying black pots for my melons, potatoes, etc. I live in Oregon, but in a forested area, so I get random sun in between the trees. I also have my pots on castors so I can move it as the sun moves or out of the rain. I make a makeshift covering in case we get a few days of rain.
