Tavares does the dirty work that most of the team won’t, or can’t. Winning faceoffs, grinding out puck battles, screening the goalie, being defensively responsible, battling in front of the net, etc. And by all accounts he is good in the locker room. Doesn’t always show up on the score sheet, but he is under appreciated in Toronto. If they take away the C from him the team identity and culture is totally lost.

No stop concentrating on trivialities. If they don't change the core players none of the rest of this matters. If they don't change the core they can't win. 61.5% of the salary is being used by five players.

I think Mathews should just hold down the A…. Domi makes a better captain over Mathews. He has no heart outside of his person regular season records. He’s never going to be a Wendal, or a Doug, and that’s the bar we need to hit with our next captain.

Mathews is not capitan material, yes he scores a lot of goals during the season, and that is it, the playoffs have been a disaster for Mathews and the rest of the core four ( which I hate them continually saying core four). A. Captain should show leadership, grit, show by example, trust and confidence. Mathews is not the guy.

"Clearing" is a little disingenuous. It's 5-8 million for a good 2nd line centre. At best you are spending all of it to try and pry Sam Bennett from Florida for 9. Better to sign Tavares for a 4 x 6/7 while you wait for Cowan.
