    What would possibly be accomplished by removing the captaincy from Tavares for the last year of his contract? His current deal expiring art the end of the season provides a seamless transition to the new captain in a year's time. It would also underscore Tavares' new role if he comes back on a team friendly contract for next season. Nothing but discord is achieved by doing it now.

    How has Auston Matthew's shown that he is Captain material? He has not in my view. Since when does designation as a team best player suggest that player to be captain material? It, absolutely does not imply qualification if you understand a captains role with any team. I'm not suggesting g he can't be. I'm suggesting he has proven nothing g to show his likelihood as a solid team leadership model.

    Everyone he plays with says he is the hardest worker on the team always striving to be better. Leads team in scoring year in year out. Leads forwards in blocked shots, takeaways and in tip 2 or 3 in hits. Doesn't complain just plays and leads by example. I'd say that's Captain material.

    I love Burke BUT I don't agree with the fact that NHL teams predict if a kid will become successful on the fact that the parents are also successful. In all reality plenty of parents whom aren't as successful still pay for all that hockey and take all that time to get their son to be able to play in a league full of successful parents. I'd say if you raise a child whom loves a sport that you support for well over a decade with not just money but especially the time these parents put in that they are already successful parents no matter what they do for a living!

  • @andrew1250

    sure but the different between all those kids is very small and teams are doing their best to find any kind of advantage touch a certain kid compared to another. At that level every kids parents do the dirty work of taking their kids to practise at early hours etc

  • @jamiesheppard767

    @jamiesheppard767

    Successful parents means they are driven people, who push themselves to be the best they can, that will most likely be instilled in the kids. Doesn't mean others aren't hard working, but possibly more susceptible to being content and keeping status quo, versus always wanting to be better.

    I’m not saying to get rid of Marner at all cost. To me, his stats aside, the eye test is more important and I see too often in the playoffs where I don’t even notice him. Heres whats happening. Marner is 5 years away from being 2nd to auston in points for the leafs record books. They will refuse to offer him a deal while Berube pressures him. And if he proves himself, he'll choose wanting to have franchise records with his home team even if it means begging for a deal thats team friendly in the 2025-2026 year. If hes not serious about the team he claims to love, he will cave under pressure and beg to leave giving us 11 million in cap space. Berube is testing him to see what he cares about more. A big paycheck anywhere that'll take him, or playing and winning with his childhood team.

    The leaf management are a dozen steps ahead of everyone. They need a $3million dollar defenceman, that’s what Lyubushkin just went for and they could not afford that. Jani Hakanpaa is bigger and better but they can’t afford $3million, but they can afford a cap hit of 1.5. So sign him for 2 years knowing he can’t play the first year. Jani also knows he can’t play this year, but he is worth 3mill next year. So give him 1.5 this year to sit out on LTIR so he gets his 1.5 and it does not go against the cap, and next year he actually plays and gets the other 1.5 And The Leafs only get a 1.5 cap hit.

    Moving Nylander seems less likely than moving Marner in large part as Tre signed him to his recent, large contract. Tre has less obligation to Marner, though when push comes to shove, it is unfortunate that Scooby (Dubas) set things up such as they are with the “Big 4” and the NMCs. I find it hard to agree that Nylander is a more valuable player, but ultimately, come playoff time, Nylander has been a better performer than Marner. Neither have brought home anything past a first round win in their 8 years together and it stands to reason that the same situation with the Big 4 not performing at playoff time will be the same this next season, despite the good moves that Tre has made so far in the offseason. With Marners camp claiming that he will not waive his NMC, I guess we are back to hoping that Berube and the new, improved D and G situations will show some progress. But hope is not the same as good strategy. Another way to look at it is that Tavares will either be gone or at a much lower cap hit should he decide to extend past next year and then we would have a Big 3 rather than a big 4. But that would mean (likely) wasting another season for the Leafs. I like Burkie personally and his straight shooting approach, whether or not he is necessarily right on his choices, is a plus. His book, Burke’s Law, is a good read for anyone interested in hockey and what goes on with upper management.

    @cbenjamin9220 no arguments there, he is a good man no doubt. But when you come into a new city and say you are going to do this and that and you fail to do what you said you were going to do, that's failure. Still he is a good person. This happen in Toronto.

    Love hearing all the moronic Leafs fans criticizing Marner for not being a playoff player when he has the most playoff points on the roster. Only Leafs fans lol.

    Always liked Burke, but he pissed me off as Leaf GM by saying one thing "We're going to do things the right way & build from the back out", then basically abandoning that plan & coughing up not just 1, but TWO 1st's for Kessel & failing to 'top 10' protect them. The arrogance that his team couldn't possibly be so bad that the picks would end up as 'top 10's' is partly what did him in, coupled with some dogshit drafting. Likeable guy, but not top drawer material as a Leaf GM.

    Taking the C off Tavares before this season is just beyond stupid. Do it after 24/25 season & give it to Rielly or Matthews. Rielly would be my choice.
