Is Israel an Apartheid State? | The Israeli-Palestinian Context | Unpacked

Recent reports by Amnesty International claim that Israel is an apartheid state. You may have come across people using this political phrase, a policy of governmental oppression best known from South Africa, as a smokescreen to describe the relationship between Israelis and Palestinian Arabs living in the West Bank and Gaza. In this episode of The Israeli-Palestinian Context we uncover how this misappropriated connection between apartheid and Israel came to be and find out the true history behind the Israeli government’s relationship with its one million Arab citizens.

    Wasn't it President Jimmy Carter who introduced the concept of apartheid as it applies to Israel? I remember hearing that he said that the title of his book "Peace, not Apartheid" wasn't meant literally, but was only meant to be provocative. The concept caught on like wildfire, however, around the world.

    This video makes it out as though Israel's presence in the West Bank is simply for security reasons . . . what about the settlements?? Obviously the situation is nowhere near as bad as in South Africa, but it seems pretty clear that in the West Bank (and East Jerusalem), your ethnicity determines what rights you have. Israel-with the strongest military in the region and the US by its side-has effective security control of the entire area between the Mediterranean and the Jordan. Within this territory, all Jews have the right to vote, move freely, etc., while most Arabs do not. "Apartheid" is a legal term and does not only apply to South Africa.

    Yes. It's especially obvious if you look at the fact that Palestinians have to constantly go through checkpoints just to move around within the West Bank. The Palestinian areas in the West Bank are essentially Bantustans. If Israel doesn't want to be an Apartheid state then they have to grant citizenship and voting rights to all Palestinians in the West Bank, but they won't do that because then there wouldn't be a Jewish majority.

    Read up on what happened to land ownership and occupancy in Judea and Samaria. Under Jordanian control, Jews were forced out of their generational homes. While they still owned their property, they couldn't live there and had to rent their property (that's what the fuss was a couple of years ago - nonpayment of rent). Jews purchased land and became the owners. If Muslims can live in Israel, Jews should be able to live in the territories.

    @@drdonna4915 I guess ideally everyone could live everywhere. The issue is that Jews have the right to vote for the government that occupies and controls the West Bank (Israel), and Palestinians lack this right due to their ethnicity. And it’s not like the settlers are peaceful cohabitants. The Jordanians’ injustice doesn’t justify the Israeli occupation.

    The examples this video gives connected to apartheid are a problem in Israel proper. Intermarriage: Since religious government authorities control marriages, Jews cannot marry non Jews without one of them converting or going abroad. If a Jew tries to convert, the religious government authority makes it difficult and these people are often contacted by "anti-assimilation" groups. Jobs: Since Palestinians with Israeli citizenship don't get drafted, they are barred from jobs that require high government clearance like being pilots for example. Different land: The Israeli government gives preference to Jewish farmers who have more access to land despite Palestinians with Israeli citizenship being more likely to live in rural areas. The government is also less likely to approve building permits for them. Besides this, Israel is very clear that it will profile people for security checks so even in Israel proper Arab citizens are more scrutinized by security.

    @@stevenv6463 You seem to think that ANY form of discrimination against a minority group warrants the epithet 'apartheid'. In that case you must think that the UK is an apartheid state because it certainly discriminates against Jews and other non-Anglicans. The national flag, for example, has a ruddy great cross; it doesn't have a star of David. High ranking members of the Anglican clergy have an automatic entitlement to sit in the legislature. The same right is not accorded to Jews. Christian festivals are national holidays; Jewish fewstivals aren't. Is that aprtheid? If not, why not? Name a government official who contacted Lehava - and by 'government official' I mean someone in a position of power, able to influence government policy. And the official Lehava website makes clear that they only contact girls. Israeli Arabs, I repeat, are enlisting in ever increasing numbers - and they're reaching very high positions. Check out this statement. Apartheid is all about legally enforced discrimination. If Jews have more land, what is the legal basis? Is it conceivable that they have more land simply because they're richer? And I copied this from Wikipedia. Israel Land Authority’s functions According to the Amendment 7 (2009) of the Israel Land Administration Law (1960), ILA’s functions are as follows. Allocation of land for housing, affordable housing, public housing, employment, open space allotments and for other purposes in locations and amounts required for the needs of economy, society and environment, including future needs; Land acquisition and land expropriation for the state according to the law, primarily for environmental purposes; Protection of rights of land owners in Israel; Promotion of registration of real estate rights in the Land books of Israel; Provision of services to the landholders in Israel as required for management and implementation of their rights; Publication of information about Israeli lands, including details on agreements made by the Authority regarding lands it manages, and data on the availability of planned Israeli lands for development and maintenance of open space territory; Any other function related to the Israel land management imposed upon it by law or by any governmental decision. as a South African of colour and a student of our Apartheid history and yours, I must say that if you (disingenuously) simplify Apartheid to your description here, you will never be able to understand the comparison. Apartheid does not simply mean one state, one government, with unequal laws for its citizens. The foundational bedrock of Apartheid were the Bantustans and the Pass Laws. The Bantustans were semi autonomous regions, similar to Area B in the West Bank). All black South Africans were deemed to be citizens of the Bantustans. They did not have citizenship of South Africa proper. Apartheid rendered South Africa into a federation of regions under the supreme power of White South Africa. Black people could only enter and reside in White South Africa with a pass. In reality the Bantustan governments had no power at all. Brown South Africans however were allowed to live in White South Africa, but as very much disenfranchised second class citizens. The UN (of course) never recognised the Bantustans, but SA continued with the ridiculous charade. SA took over Namibia after defeating the German colonists there in WW1. When SA became an Apartheid state in 1948 they implemented the Bantustan policy there as well. They held on to Namibia until 1989, ostensibly for security reasons, much as Israel does with the Occupied Territories. The West Bank and Gaza are Bantustans, in everything but name. Apartheid is intricate, both in SA and Israel. So when you reject your opponents challenge of Apartheid, it is because YOU do not understand the intricacies, not them. Study the intricacy of SA Apartheid and your situation in Israel will be illuminated to you .If you actually want equality for all Palestinians (as your videos often claim), and this even possibly in one state with regional powers. Well, that one state already exists, de facto if not de jure. It is already a federation of semi autonomous regions under the supreme control of Israel. Start by recognising the massive discrimination Palestinians live under in that one de facto state, both in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem Banstustans, and even within Israel proper. And when a member of our delegation at the ICJ stated that Palestinians live under a worse form of Apartheid than we ever did, it's true. Separate roads for Palestinians and Jews?! Even in our darkest days we never had such a thing!

Israel citizens in West bank use different routes for protection and fire of being murdered, Palestinians are allowed to enter Israel for work, visits, and using Israel airports but Israel Jews can't go to Palestine part for fear of being murder, Israel provide food, health care, jobs, security, water, electricity to Palestinians but they are still ungrateful it's not Israel fault that they love their people so much they will do anything to protect them even if it means to bulid a big wall. And for gaza Israel is not their and doesn't govern their it's hamas if we are to go by your explanation of apartheid it Palestinians doing aparthied against Israelis not the other way around. As a black South African, the division between Arabs and Israelis hurts my heart. It may not be the exact same circumstances that black, Indian and mixed race South Africans had to endure, but the discrimination and judgement based on ethnicity produces the same result. Division. “Apart-hood”. Any sect or group that is discriminated against based on ethnicity is a form of apartheid. Don’t minimize Apartheid by picking on detail of ethnicity rather than race. The Jews were originally buying what was considered the least desirable land. At ridiculous prices making the Arab landowners extremely rich. In the Middle to late 1800´s this land was devoid of people. Mark Twain and many other people who visited wrote about it. Including the Arabs living in the Levant. All the towns and places of old having crumbled to dust was the exact phrase the ottoman ruler of the time said. After ww1 this Ottoman Empire was crumbling and the ruler sent two populations from around 🇹🇷 To populate the area. This was a reaction to the British n French dickheaded colonial meddling into the levant.(I use this neutral old name for the area as it has national ambiguity). He wanted to Arabize the region to combat the influx of Jews escaping persecution in Europe. Arab pride was already stinging from their loss of Empire status after ww1 and there was a rise of militias and infighting for the power vacuum. This plus Britian promises the land to at least 4 different peoples. There is a crazy sheik who leads several attempts to drive the Jews out of land that the bought. They did not steal anything at this point. Britain is unable to squash this uprising of Arabs. In the beginning it was Arab Aggression. They ask the newly formed UN to step in. They do. They decide to create a 2 state system with the Arab population getting 75% of the land and the Jews getting a small and mostly barren 25%. The Arabs get practically all the good land. Everything green and fertile other than a few places in the desert that were being slowly turned green by Jewish hard work and ingenuity. The Arabs said no. They don’t want peace. The entire Arab population said no. They started to kill and persecute Jews in Arab lands all around the Arab nations. The Jews were escaping persecution in Europe and suddenly had to escape persecution in 90% of Islamic lands with a small few notable exceptions. This created another mass immigration to The levant. The Arab nations said that they were going to wipe out the Jews. Many Arabs were told to leave their homes because it was all out war. The Jews at the time often pleaded with their neighbors to stay. The dictates of Jihad do not allow Muslims freedom of thought though do they? If you quit it’s a death Sentence, this it truth. Apostates are to be killed. The Arab forces lost. The areas that supported the Arab attempt to kill all Jews were subdued and those are the areas that had the population pushed out. Strategic importance places. It’s survival at this point and an absolute miracle that the Jews are still alive. They declare independence. The un brokers a new deal. The Arabs say no. This time 8 Arab nations get involved to wipe Israel off the map. Miracle again. Israel wins. This time they take the Gotland heights because it is strategically necessary and the Sinai because Egypt was a little bitch. The cries for death to Israel have never stopped. They teach it to their toddlers. They never stopped attacking Jews. They still talk of slitting the throats of their children. Have you even seen their pro martyrs propaganda on tv and in their music? Over the years in this horrible situation the people of Israel have given land back as a move towards reconciliation. Every time the Arab population uses it as a launching pad for the next jihad. This portofrei responsibility is almost never mentioned in western media. If you don’t research deeply you would never know. The Palestinians have been horribly used by the other Arab nations. They were never granted any form of citizenship by any Arab nations. They are used as human shields. They are sacrificial lambs in the name of Islamic pride. The works tries to help and has givin billions in aid to help our Palestinian brothers and sisters and the money is always diverted to more military and terrorist activities while the Palestinians live in squalor. A martyr assembly belt churning out bodies in a suicidal infantile rage against a lost cause based upon false narratives. I know for a fact that Israel would have let you live in peace if you stopped killing their children. That was decades ago. Now you are pushing them into no longer wanting to give you another chance. And the truth? Why should they? You want to destroy them. You don’t want them as neighbors. And you are willing to die to prove it. You will even get honored because your culture loves martyrs above peacemakers. I have read the entire Koran several times. It’s a book of peace. Until the end. And the end is war. And the end supersedes. That is why the Palestinians are committing suicide for the tell-lie-vision. Look at us😭 Victim 😥 Never any accountability.. It’s not even on the Radar of your culture. You are immune to empathy as a whole. Not everyone. I know peaceful beautiful Muslims. But as a whole. You are war. Until we are all under the yoke, right? It’s definitely in your book.

    I'm new to the Palestinian/Israel topic, as an American that previously didn't pay attention to it because it seemed too neverending snd complicated. But now I am looking for fair and factual information. I just saw a recent video about "apartheid in Israel" and now I'm watching this one which seeks to dispute the claims. I have some questions and comments:

  • @ec6621

    @ec6621

    3 жыл бұрын

    1) this video insinuates in the graphic that the origin of attacks were largely from West Bank and the places of attack were largely towards the cities along the shore thus the wall is justified, for security reasons. But... that doesn't make sense to me because missiles can fly over walls; people do not. So it makes more sense to me that the wall is meant to separate (or isolate) people first and foremost.

  • @ec6621

    @ec6621

    3 жыл бұрын

    2) Israelis are accused of land grabs and Palestinian displacement. So if Area C (blue), which you've said is Israeli led administration and security, is the *_majority of land_* in West Bank, then why does the fact that 90% of Palestinians are within Area A (red) & B (yellow) combined, matter with regards to the accusation of land grabbing? The map just tells me the vast majority of West Bank land is under Israeli control and Palestinians are crammed into smaller red areas. Red areas that aren't even contiguous. So unless they're Israeli citizens (which most Arabs aren't) their mobility is negatively affected and their rights reduced the moment they leave one red area (enter a yellow or blue area) just to travel to another red area. I don't know, guys... this map doesn't help in disputing accusations of apartheid. It... kinda confirms it.

  • @ec6621

    @ec6621

    @DKGames 1) Thanks for responding. Hmm, I have many more questions now. (Sorry if my questions are amateur). So the wall is for the purpose of Israelis controlling which non-Israeli Arabs can leave West Bank and enter Israel? Ok. 1a) Do those restrictions apply only to non-Israeli Arabs or non-israeli people in general (regardless of race or ethnicity)? I'm wondering if discrimination is based on ethnicity or nationality. 1b) Ok, if West Bank is considered eastern Israel and those non-Israeli Arabs have lived there for generations or their whole life, why are they not Israeli citizens? They're not Palestinian citizens. They're not Jordanian citizens. They're not Israeli citizens. It sounds like they're stateless. 1c) Since West Bank is just eastern part of Isreal, are *_no restrictions_* placed on Israeli citizens in West bank? For example, are Israelis allowed to live/work/travel anywhere in Israel including West Bank? And if non-Israeli Arabs aren't Israeli citizens, does that mean they're *_not allowed_* to work/live/travel anywhere? If so, how is this not apartheid??

  • @ec6621

    @ec6621

    3 жыл бұрын

    @DKGames 2) Ok, so you're saying Palestinians weren't pushed into the red Area A's over time, they simply were living there the whole time. And the blue Area C's were free for the taking. So the Israelis claimed that land. 2a) But what about the spaces in between the red areas? If the Israelis took over those spaces, that's restricting access they previously had to each other in different red areas, since they're not contiguous. 2b) They previously had free access to the Mediterranean Sea, too, including Gaza strip. Now that's limited. 2c) It sounds like the Israeli rationale is "the land where your home is not built on is not privately owned by you". So the vast blue Area C which was previously shared public space is no longer public nor shared. This does sound like land-grabbing. 2d) There are over 2 million Palestinian Arabs living in West Bank, but 90% of them live in the small areas A and B. Yet the video says there's about 300,000 Jews living in the larger blue area C. This means for majority of Palestinians there's a little land for a lot of people but for Jews, there's a lot of land for few people. Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions.

  • @ec6621

    @ec6621

    3 жыл бұрын

    @DKGames 1a) Ok, so restrictions into/out of West Bank are applied on basis of nationality; or should I say... on the basis of NON-nationality, non-Israeli nationality. So are non-Israeli Jews ever restricted? Do we find the vast majority of those restricted non-Israeli's are Arab? By "these specific areas" do you mean *_all_* of West Bank; or just parts of it, like red and yellow Areas A and B. 1b) Well that's good if the Palestinians have the option to become Israeli citizens. That would at least give them a nationality/citizenship as opposed to being stateless. But why aren't they automatically Israeli citizens by virtue of having been born in that land, which is now part of Israel. As in: they were Jordanian citizens, and now they're Israeli citizens with full Israeli rights. 1c) By "these areas" do you mean only Areas A, within West Bank? Because the video showed that Israelis do indeed live in West Bank; Especially in Area C, where they outnumber the Palestinians. Ok, Palestinians can go in and out of Area A, but can they go in and out of West Bank to work, live & build, and travel? Even though Israeli's can't go in and out of Area A, they can go in and out of West Bank to work/live/travel, right?

  • @geegeeh.6118
    @geegeeh.61182 жыл бұрын

    The video omits a lot of facts. Just like the fact that separate type of IDs are issues for Jewish Israelis and non Jewish Israelis. These ids determines what rights you will have. Another fact, half the population in Jerusalem are denied citizenship because they’re not Jews. Israel is the controlling authority over the whole territory, but in territories where majority are not Jews, you have segregated roads and separate legal system. One of the population that perceives itself as the superior race, the other for the race treated as inferior.

Arabs choose to pray in mosques, not because they are forced to do so, but because Islam dictates to them where they should pray. Jews pray in synagogues. However, in other things we are all the same. We ride the same buses; we are cared for in the same hospitals, and we purchase goods in the same stores and supermarkets. We also work together in many of the same offices and institutions.

Our *religion, language, culture, holidays, rituals, liturgy, history,* and even the words Jew and Jewish are all inseparable from *historical Judea* and our collective longing to return to the Land of Israel. The land of Israel is where Jews became a people and the oldest monotheistic faith. It is where Jews achieved *sovereignty* before losing it and regaining it several times until much of the *indigenous Jewish population* was either killed or forced into exile following the *Roman Empire’s* brutal suppression of the heroic *Jewish revolt* in the second century of the Common Era. Though the Romans subsequently renamed the land *Syria Palaestina,* the Jewish people never left our homeland physically or spiritually. *Archaeological evidence* of Jewish life can be found in more than *30,000 sites* in Israel with antiquities dating back centuries. Even when we were massacred and persecuted by Christian Crusaders, Arab and Ottoman invaders, the British-led Jordanian Arab Legion, or more recently Hamas suicide bombers and rockets, our attachment never wavered. It is in this same land where Jews miraculously *revitalized* the Hebrew language, *rebuilt* the institutions necessary for independence, *re-engaged* in rituals that are uniquely observed in the land of Israel, redeveloped the land and the economy so that by several magnitudes the Jewish and non-Jewish populations grew, and offered refuge not just to the remnant which survived the Holocaust, but also millions of Jews fleeing persecution from the Muslim Middle East, Ethiopia, and the former Soviet Union. @@Mouse01011 The invasion and hostage taking in October by Hamas was an act of terrorism. What is telling is Israeli leaders describing it as their 9/11, their pearl harbor, as an attack out of nowhere and a clear break from normal. Normal for Israeli's is living in a developed first-world democracy, with one of the worlds most advanced militaries and missile defense systems . It sells itself as a holiday destination. It was a break with normal them. Normal is the West Bank facing the indignity of occupation and the piecemeal theft of land. Normal is Gaza being one of the largest concentrations of people becoming increasingly nonviable as a independent state as it is blocked from developing, whose terrorised population did indeed turn to a violent and antidemocratic organisation. Normal is ineffectual rocket fire being met with bombardment; suicidal terrorism with regular terrorism. Normal is thousands of Palestinian men, women, and children under administrative detention. Israeli's dying at rates normally reserved for Palestinians is indeed a tragedy. There doesn't seem to be an acceptable response for the Palestinians other than to get with the programme and give up their land or die already. I would ideally point out to Palestinians that Israel is doing this to them and not Jews in general, but can you really fault them for accepting Israel's own rhetoric which equates the two, or that dismisses criticism of Israel as antisemitism? Isn't it the slightest bit gross to say "these people want to exterminate us" as you bomb Gaza once again to rubble? Some of Hamas' rhetoric and stated aspirations are vile , as vile as what Israel is practicing. Palestinians are an inconvenient people, who live in land earmarked for the Jewish homeland. Arabs paying for the sins of Europe. However pressing the need for a Jewish homeland, whoever was the initial aggressor, Israel decisively won this war a long time ago. It is like a person standing on the neck of another still ineffectually flailing at their legs with a knife, insisting they have no choice because if they get off obviously they'd attack them. Instead picking they pockets, and taking the flare up in hostility in response to this as further evidence of their unreasonableness. At some point you can either cease your hostility and indeed comprise your commitment to your security in the hope of peace, or just commit and crush their windpipe.

    I admit some criticisms of Israel may be true (but I don't know enough), but claiming Israel runs "Aparteid" or "terroism" is definately "lying for the sake of a cause" - what we call "propaganda". Some people have an INCREDIBLY one-sided, impractical & hyper-partisan view on the Isael/Palestinian issue. Putting nationalism, rage or pity of oneself or others above all else, all practical realities - that is not a virtue imo, but creates far more suffering.

Here is why i said that: (1) Most ppl are INCREADIBLY one sided on this and will accuse israel or palestians of anything. Do thus an accusation by itself means absolutely nothing, what else do you expect? (2) Apartheid is about race or religion, and restriction based purely on that, not for security. But Arabs do live in Israel and are let into the same places, correct? Sure they may get treated the same way by some ppl as Jews get treated in london or elsewhere by arabs. But apartheid? 4:40 _"As a result of the Oslo Accords, Palestinians largely govern themselves, and vote to elect leaders of the Palestinian Authority government."_ The premise of Apartheid was to create a separation of the races. An _"apart-hood"_ where each ethnic group would be separated from greater South Africa, and be confined in areas or lands specifically designated for that ethnic group. These lands or "ethnic designations" were called _"Bantustans"_ and in these areas, Black people were told that these were their homelands, and they were allowed to (as you said), _"...govern themselves, and vote to elect leaders..."_ . Let me continue... 4:50 _"Israeli laws don't actually apply to much if the West Bank, except for certain areas with greater security risks or higher Jewish populations"_ In these *_Bantustans_* some had the priveleges like *_"Area C"_* in Israel had -they were self-governing. But the majority were *_"Area As and Bs"_* in that the Apartheid government had some control over them. Aside from this, there were areas once more designated for Black South Africans, called _"Townships"_ . These areas were the _"...areas of greater security risks..."_ that you mentioned, and were thus in the complete control of the South African government, and their inhabitants were subject to various restrictions and even curfews. One of the most hated of those controls was that inhabitants of these townships were not allowed to leave these areas with a _"pass"_ , which Black people had to have them at all times otherwise they would be imprisoned. They were also denied any access to live any else in South Africa except for the areas that they were forced to live in. All this echoes the same restrictions that Israel imposes on the Palestinians in the West Bank, thus making Israel's current enforcement of this system, an Apartheid one. You can try to justify your actions in the Occupied West Bank, but you CANNOT deny that Israel has enforced Apartheid in order to deal with your perceived problems in that region. in conclusion, Israel is an Apartheid state. In its entirety.

    I hear that “it’s complicated” but if you are trying to be balanced about your approach to these issues you should have some Palestinian youth speakers instead of only kids with Israeli flags in the background speaking if you want to be fair about this complicated problem that has gone on for far too long. Also you harken back to the Six Day War as why it all has to be this way in most of the videos. Does it though? Most of not everyone who fought in that war are long gone? Why does it still bind your hands from doing something? Finally the word Apartheid doesn’t belong to South Africa or any other country for that matter. It’s definition is a policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race. If that definition fits then the word can be used by anyone. You can’t culturally appropriate an English word. Also the speaker in this videos points out that South Africa was unjust to its own citizens while Israel is clearly being unjust to people they are militarily occupying who aren’t part of Isreal!? 😆 Seriously? Making a vid quibbling about stealing a word from another country may have been the wrong direction.

    @@azaztoto8676 You speak of what the Quran says about Moses. The Quran is the work of Mohamed who lived 2000 years after Moses. Moses himself wrote the first 5 Torah books, guided by God. Why don't you read them? These are the words of Moses himself. In Exodus 3 God told Moses that his name was YAHWEH. Why is this name never used in the Quran? You will also find the covenant line of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. In Genesis 17 God clearly states that Ishmael isn't a covenant son. Issac was the covenant son of Abraham and Issac's son Jacob became known as Israel. Israel became God's covenant people. Mohammed also lived 600 years after Christ. Christ clearly said in each gospel that wicked men would kill him and that he would be raised to life after three days. Those who wrote the gospels were those who lived and walked with Jesus. Matthew and John were disciples, John Mark wrote Peters gospel (gospel of Mark). Luke was a medical doctor and apostle who didn't meet Jesus, but who worked with the disciples and apostles including Paul. Why then would the Quran say Jesus wasn't crucified and raised. Even Bart Ehrman's a former Christian and now author says Christ was crucified. The Torah and gospels are much closer and more accurate sources than the Quran. I suggest you read them and find the truth which Jesus taught.

At the same time I've seen images of Palestinians being corralled and barred from developing by occupation. One population exists in a constant state of privation in the name of security for another population . Whole Israeli cities exist in the west bank now as well as numerous other settlements. The west bank faces the indignity of occupation and piecemeal theft of useful land, while Gaza is one of the largest concentrations of people in the world and is routinely bombed by one of the most advanced military in the world. You make a place unfit for humans, don't be surprised when it produces monsters. Hamas' violent response to Israel is suicidal terrorism, which is met by the IDF with regular terrorism. There doesn't seem to be an acceptable response for the Palestinians other than get with the programme and either give up and leave or die already. Zionism is the project of establishing a Jewish homeland by having Jews move there from Europe and elsewhere. This is a colonial population as much as the Afrikaners are in South Africa. This is not assert anything about the justification of that project or to argue that it shouldn't exist, simply to point out a similarity. In both cases, these colonial states found an inconvenient population within their claimed territory, and there existed a near constant state of conflict with the surrounding countries. There exists apartheid rhetoric that claims the Afrikaners found an empty land and only later did the Bantu population move in, similar to the Zionist rhetoric that dismisses the historical claim of the Palestinians . Just as the apartheid regime existed with the support of the US and western allies, so to is Israel one of us. This isn't something happening on China's or Russia's watch, or whatever authoritarian regime you care to name, it is happening on ours. An ally, a first world developed democracy is committing a slow genocide of an inconvenient population living at its mercy and by its rules. Of course there are difference. Race relations in Israel are hardly as rosey or simple as presented in this video, but yes the apartheid that exists in Israel and Palestine isn't racial in the way it was in South Africa. To label Israel an apartheid state is to say that the two situations are substantively similar, not identical.

    I grew up in South Africa so I understand apartheid and what I see in Isreal is not apartheid. The views that I hear of apartheid in South Africa are also quite distorted. It wasn't created because whites viewed themselves as superior, it was because they believed everybody should be separate, that’s why people were classified as Indian, Black etc. This was the reason that the homelands were created. Most people see the release of Nelson Mandela as the watershed moment, it wasn't, apartheid was mostly over long before the 1990s but the laws were still in place. I studied with both Blacks and Indians in the 1980s, who ironically qualified before me because I was required to do two years national service whereas they weren't. Apartheid wasn't right and that's why most of South Africa voted for change. It is important to report the truth because in so many cases the narrative is wrong but it's used effectively as a weapon. This is the case for Israel, there is no apartheid in Israel, but this word is so powerful and it's being used against the Israelis. Why is "from the river to the sea" not being seen as both genocide and apartheid, but Israel's actions in defending themselves are? Let's not forget that the slogan implies complete annihilation of the Jews - genocide, and a piece of land where there will be no Jews - apartheid.

    @ the old anti-semite victim card. I'm not even talking about jewish people, you idiot. I'm talking about Israel's policies. If you consider yourself entitled to evict a palestinian from their house and settle there; if you think you desrve more rights as a citizen than a palestinian; if you agree with blockading their land, expand yours, annex what's is not your land, you are the racist one. Psychological projection won't be enough.

    Israel is several times more oppressive than South Africa under apartheid. I like how you say the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, apartheid development is way more complicated than how South Africa developed. Not hardly, the Dutch and British built South Africa and when it was done, Africans came in droves, unlike the formation of Israel, where the people were already there in droves, God's chosen people, in their mind, had only one options, systematically exterminated them.

    That's really sad as you show how ignorant you are. The early Jewish leaders appealed to the Arabs to stay in their houses and help them create a country together. There have been less than 100,000 "Palestinians" killed in the last 100 years. There was never a time that Israel started Any of the fighting. Five Arab armies attacked the one day old country of Israel. From the 1880s, the Arabs attacked the Jews on lands they bought. You really need to educate yourself. *Buy a book! Google is free!*
