Yes but also a lot of retirements. This makes it hard for back half of the grid to score points which makes it even more difficult to place them in the standings accurately, due to one or 2 lucky results totally changing the dynamic of the standings. I've thought for years it should be top 15 like motogp. Championship is about consistency and if someone finishes p11 every race this season, they deserve to be 11th in the standings, and not bumped down by a few lucky races for others.

@@Andybarney555I don't have the data at my fingertips, but there were races in the mid-80s with pre-qualifying. 26 cars would qualify to start a GP (except Monaco), so the there was pre-qualifying to eliminate the slowest before qualifying. There may not have been 36 entries for every race, but in 1985 there were 36 entries and 35 in 1984. I'll do some scratching...

Spot on, Marc. I've been banging on about the flawed points system for years. It used to be top 6...then top 10...now they want to discuss moving it to top 12....WHO is coming up with these random numbers, and why??? Award points for all finishers, and the best man still wins at the end of the season. Fun fact...if we had followed a linear points structure of 20pts for 1st down to 1pt for 20th, Perez would've been leading the championship right now, ahead of Leclerc, and Max would be only 3rd. How's that for excitement!

The sprints don't really work for me as they're too disconnected from the actual race ... the way to resolve this, is change the order ... quali to determine the grid for the sprint, then the sprint result determines the grid for the final race ... it makes the sprint a proper part of the process and balances out drivers who quali well and those who are better in race mode ... and you could spread it across the whole season as well then.

For me the ideal race weekend would look like this... Friday - practice...2 or even 3 sessions, you have all day Saturday AM - Sprint race, randomised grid. Award the top 10, or even half points for all finishers. Saturday PM - quali for Sunday's GP Sunday - race. Points awarded in a sliding scale for all finishers.

You mentioned reverse grids again, but I somehow don't think teams would push for a top grid position to only have it be inverted. Even if just for a Sprint-esque format, that's pretty much taking the reward away to start with. Instead, why not hold 1 qualifying session followed by a reverse grid (half-point-sprint?) race followed by the actual race, where the qualifying result determines the gridslots for both events. That way teams will have to push to benefit their sunday race-position and we get an entertaining, slightly less impactful spectacle with a reversed setup.

I like the idea of getting points for the whole grid. Get's every car to fight for something. Points should only be awarded to cars that actually finish. So all car who cross the finish line after the winner does. So no clasification with 2-3 laps behind cause they retire just before the end... You finish you get points, you don't zero points for you.

A format for the sprints I've thought could be interesting... You have to start the main GP on the same set of tyres you finish the sprint race on. Some would pit for better race strat, some would take the sprint points, and there would be a diversity of tyre performance on the grid at the start of the main race, much like when there were different fuel strategies when refuelling was allowed. This would also play into many different pit stop strategies being employed and stop there being an optimal strategy which most just stick to

@@pranc236 well no, because you could pit right at the end of the sprint if you were out of the points, or happy to forfeit your position, so as to have a set of freshies for the main event. Some arent gona give up points in the sprint, so would almost definitely have some mixed strategies. In the end of the day though, they need to shake things up somehow or the sprint is just a mini version of the main race, and no real reason to think the results would be any different between them. Sounds better than reverse grids too, as for that, people might start just qualifying strategically

I like the NASCAR system where races are broken Into stages and the top ten teams earn additional points. If Max is a smart guy he will stay with Red Bull and sign contracts that allow him to leave. Vettel left Red Bull to go to Ferrari and that didn't work out well. Toto trying to openly recruit Max is not much different than Ferrari signing Hamilton in the beginning of the current season.

The penalty had little effect on his (as usual) underperforming race. And what’s more he prevented Ricciardio from serving his 10 second Safety Car related penalty so he’s now hit with a 3 place grid drop at Miami. Regarding Lewis, I remember reading a comment of one of his engineers that he was (is?) very hard to work with in testing. They would send him out on a lap with a certain setting during a test, he would return having three parameters changed on his steering wheel as he thought it would get him a better result. As an engineer, you can understand how frustrating that can be when you are running a program. Lewis, world class driver as he no doubt is, seems to be limited in his understanding of the technology behind racing. Whatever the reason, Lewis's experiments are costing Mercedes points....

Reverse grids on paper are a good idea. But it would present it's own issues like teams that have no chance of getting points anyway will set up the car for the race and then qualify badly so they could at least have some chance of getting the final points. Tracks that are near impossible to overtake will become even more boring. So you'd have to do it like F2 right? only top 10 get reversed otherwise it will introduce a whole new level of manipulation. I'm not sure if I like the idea, Formula 1 is all about the best team and the best drivers trying to be nr. 1. I feel like it will just become too gimmicky and goes against what F1 (imo should) stand for. There are other categories for that. F2, FE

Personally I’m pro sprint races. But I think the initial set up was best. Right now they seem pretty irrelevant as it has no consequences for the real race, and seeing how the teams are divided if you running 12th at the half way mark may as well retire the car to preserve the engine. I remember Perez crashing out on the first sprint. That’s kinda the fun. As is it’s just replacing practice. Are people really wanting to watch practice more? I also think it should be either all weekends or no weekends. I’ve seen F1 give more points from top 6 to now 10. If we give more than may as well just get to the conclusion give it to all drivers that finish the race. And only DNF goes home pointless.

I disagree slightly that points further down would generate drivers and teams taking more risk. I think it would give the complete opposite, if a team like sauber are in 12th with points available they'll play it conservative to keep those points whereas now they can take strategy risks as they have nothing to lose. Some of the best results for back of the grid teams are because they had nothing to lose and tried some wild strategy or gambled when the rain was going to come etc.

Sadly the crew at Aston Martin are hamstrung when it comes to dealing with Lance. Daddy's boy has been spoon fed his whole life and doesn't have the ability to reflect on his own shortcomings. Papa Stroll has to accept a lot of the blame for this and needs to make some necessary changes for the sake of the team.

A sprint weekend is a whole lot of TV watching, esp when time is already split with other life things, must be tricky if you are able to watch live. So here's some ideas that hopefully avoid teams and drivers trying tricks to "qualify where they want to" Sprint weekends, two equal length races one on Saturday one on Sunday, approx 1 hour each. Saturdays grid is reverse championship order, so no manipulating last races finishing order for a good sprint spot. Sunday would be all too easy to say start as you finished, or reverse start again from the result but I feel some might try tricks If they aren't doing well. You could reverse the finishers who didn't fall more than 1 or 2 laps behind but where would that leave early crashers? I'd be tempted to do a fastest lap from Saturdays race, Saturdays race was quali. As the fast cars will be in traffic a lot of the time they won't automatically get the fastest times, and cars out front may not be the quickest. Parc ferme is open between races if you want to make changes. As for normal quali an idea I've floated for a while now is back to a 1 hour session. For the first 20 mins only the bottom 1/3 teams in the championship get to be out on track, for the next 20 the bottom 2/3 teams get to be on track, the bottom 1/3 have now had 40 mins. For the last 20 all teams are allowed on track. The bottom teams have had an hour to dial the car and empty track to play with, the top teams only 20 mins to find a quiet part of track and get their laps done. Imagine the weather like in China getting worse and the top teams have to go in the conditions they've got. Or it getting better and the lower teams have got their inters up to temp and going for it, or maybe already got their slicks fully warmed and the top teams now have to get up to speed. Point wise, like MotoGP, points to 16th but they do have 22 riders not 20 so maybe 15th, 3/4 of the grid. Cost cap like other metrics based on finishing position should also be sliding with lower placed teams able to spend more ( no point giving them more aero time if they can't spend the money ) Lastly for now, No DRS for the top 3.

@@F1Elvis Reverse championship order would eliminate the need for sprint qualifying. I hate the idea of points for qualifying, let alone for sprint qualifying. Maybe they should award points for drivers finishing all their porridge... However, I do actually like the proposed new points in that it should stimulate racing further down the field, especially with the reliability these days.

Your app requires signup by email. Problem is that I am not receiving the email with the confirmation code and thus cannot even get into the app. No, the email did not go to my junk folder… it was not received at all. You likely have a sketchy email provider that also services spammers or other questionable service providers and as such your email provider likely sits on one or more email blacklists. You will need to get this sorted if you really want your app to succeed to its potential. I may try again in a month or so to see if there is any difference.

Somehow, F2 sprints are good. Longer than F1 sprints, and top 8 reversed from a single quali. With the huge cost of repairs, little incentive for smaller teams to try too hard there.

Yes they were on track when they otherwise wouldn't have been if it was a wet FP2 but that still didn't make for an entertaining sprint race, nor did it lead to an interesting GP. the new points system I am a fan of despite the old fashioned opinion of Martin Brundle on twitter.

Hi Marc, is it still true that if you get a point in a GP F1 will pay for your transportation costs to the next Grand Prix? I think it was like that in the 90's. I think that points should be awarded for every position, the racing further back would become epic... Just make the 1 point for last and 100 for 1st Food for thought. The battle through the field would be mega. About Stroll, I agree he was watching the head of the field on his right.

@@F1Elvis I am sure I read it somewhere. ... But i am sure there was additional incentive apart from the divvy up at the end of the season. To answer the other question about Horner getting upset by Merc courting Max, It's F1, it's the Piranha club, get over it... As for the 2026 regs... big shake up... Will F1 survive the more electric era? personally I would rather watch Super Formula or WEC than all electric F1, but the next generation might love it and it may fly. Who knows... It's a bit of a tight rope for F1. You just have to go to Goodwood to see the strength of the love affair with the internal combustion engine. Then again you just have to throw a dart at a map of the UK and chances are within a 20 mile radius of that darts location there will be a guy in a shed with a stunning bit of historical machinery..

I personally don't like the sprint format, it gums up the weekend with nonsense. If they want to change things around then how about a two day race weekend something like, Sat. morning practice, Sat. afternoon qualies, Sunday the race. Get rid of all those superfluous stuff on Thur. & Fri., plus the fact it would be cheaper, you wouldn't need boarding for those two days.🤪 I think everything is dull, the same guy qualies 1st, he wins the race running away, how about we reinstitute the weight penalties to bring closer together on track.🤪🤪 All out.

About Horner and Wolff te following. As you said It’s not done to openly court a driver that has a contract until 2028. So there’s your answer. Wolff should have stopped whining specifically whence’s got absolutely nothing to offer him! And as for saying Verstappen is just this good because the car is built for him, that’s rubbish. Newly designs a car that’s fast, not that’s for Max.😊

Some weekends, Stroll can be a reasonable driver. Other weekends, it's like he couldn't care less. Spoilt brat. I thought China was the best weekend of the year so far, but I still don't like the sprint. Make it a separate championship, and allow teams to enter different drivers. This will give valuable experience to the teams reserve & development drivers.

Been a huge fan of Merc since they came back into the sport but not a fan of some of Toto's antics since the regulation changes. That said it's a business and if a driver (available or not) that he is interested in signing and is willing to leave their current team, he would be stupid to not at least ask the question and see them going to another competitor.
