Is Hasbro Really Trying To Sell D&D, or Not?
Ойын-сауық
Yesterday, news broke that Tencent was in talks to acquire the rights to the D&D IP, but something is fishy as these reports are nearly a point-for-point re-telling of a video we posted a few weeks ago. We look into this story in more detail and try to get to the heart of where this story originated from. Stephen and Baron de Ropp from @DungeonMasterpiece dig into this!

Serious respect for admitting you probably got it completely wrong. Way too many KZreadrs would double down and make excuses, or just pretend it never happened, so it takes real integrity to publish this kind of follow-up video.
tmw media literacy isn't an entirely dead corpse yet. ty for diving into the situation further and putting info like this out there asap.
They'd better do something. Hasbro can't pay dividends with a psy-op.
Still, at this pace it might still become a self-fulfilling prophecy

Just an elaborate set up to teach me about scraping and AI at Steven's expense, thanks Steven!
I think Glicker was too quick at giving himself far too much credit. "Word for word" is an exaggeration.

No, I was quoting the articles posted at comicbook.com. They posted that wording, not me. As for "falling for clickbait," I never said this was confirmed in all of my videos, and I said very clearly that it could have been taken from my very video as it was way too close in talking points. None of my videos reported this as true and I clearly pointed out where this source could have come from. I have nothing to hide from as it's all out there.

Hey, you are right! Good Catch!
This was my first thought when I heard the original story.
Stephen is the guy who presents the group project and Baron is the guy who does all the work xD
Excellent job on tracking down what this could be!
The Facts so far... 1. Hasbro has money problems 2. Hasbro is making contracts 3. A couple contracts have been made public 4. As far as the rest of the "news" it's all scuttlebutt to me at this point.

thank you for doing a follow up on this story.
You are the tail wagging this dog
How were “We” tricked? “We” weren’t. Some folks spent more than 30 seconds trying to verify the rumor rather than rushing to make a sensationalist video to get views.

Finally someone said it. I found it odd that all the talking heads made videos within minutes of each other with no reputable news source saying the same thing. I think all the talking heads of the hobby were either A) dooped, or B) sensationalized a rumor to get views
ok.... so keep this in mind in the future, in these kind of acquisition cases (Hasbro of WOTC), the IPs owned by the acquired company tend to be bundled and Hasbro wouldn't have the ability to chop it off from the WOTC whole. in the RARE case that WOTC was in such trouble when it was bought that they signed the worst contract known to man, then Hasbro wouldn't have bothered to keep WOTC around in anything other than a name/logo, and there wouldn't be the WOTC subdivision with MTG and D&D, that wouldn't need to exist. Hasbro can license IP usage, like they did for BG3, but to sell the IP they most likely would have to sell the entire WOTC organization (MTG included).
You’re also a good target because you like to advertise how right you are. Put out an article about you being right and there’s a good chance you’re going to make a video telling us how right you are increasing the chance of the video going viral.
You guys tricked yourself.
Good to get this cleared up. However, I guess I won't asking Steven for lucky numbers after all...
Now do a video on the real news about Foundry partnering with Hasbro

We actually covered that yesterday during the stream in quite a bit of detail if you want to watch that.
Thank you so much Stephen 🎉
It's an interesting exercise in confirmation bias. The article repeated things you posited, so they sounded believable, which is why you went with it and took it at face value
this is fascinating
EXACTLY What I said. But everyone nay Sayed me saying it was real! Trust a Wizard... or a Witch in this case!
"Ahhh, The Internet; The cause of and the solution to all of life's problems" - Homer Simpson, probably
I was really wondering how the hell you managed to be so 'on target' with your speculations. It was uncanny, I thought Stephen must know more than he is letting on. But this explanation makes a lot more sense. It is so hard to parse the amount of bullshit that is getting put on the internet. It really does feel like the internet is more of a liability than a helpful tool nowadays. My hats of to Baron for digging in and explaining your methodology.
hard cut for that ad break at much higher volume than Baron speaks is super jarring
Stephen, you sounded skeptical in your previous live video about this. I think in real time you weren’t sure, but you certainly saw the incredulity of the whole thing.
I've already dropped buying Hasbro products in general. Their upper management can eat my shorts. But that does not mean I want to see D&D owned by a Chinese mega-corp. It was already nauseating enough just imagining D&D becoming exclusively a VTT under Hasbro. But now imagine it having spyware bundled into it, and it's a 100% pay-to-win scheme - because that's exactly what Tencent does. The very thought of it makes me want to throw up.
Thank you very much Baron.
I wasn't fooled for even a second. The reporting was really suspicious.
Here’s another theory. Tencent is a video game company that has its own financial troubles. And a Chinese news site picks up a story that Tencent might get access to the rights to the best selling video game of 2023. It’s exactly the sort of story a company would float to mollify its shareholders. It’s not like Kneon over at Clownfish TV hasn’t been predicting Hasbro selling off Wizards to Tencent or somebody for four years or so. The question is not “where did this Chinese ‘news’ source get the story, the question is why was the D&D KZread-o-sphere so quick to assume the story was TRUE? Because, in the end, Hasbro should see this and realize just how much they’ve annoyed and alienated their core customer base for D&D that they would jump on a rumor that Hasbro would sell off D&D to a company who would be even more determined to turn D&D into a microtansaction/loot-box video game than Hasbro is.
One person who was duped posted a video yesterday repeating the lie they were told, and today it's mayhem.

I wasn't "told" or "duped" by anything. You obviously didn't watch any of the videos, as I clearly pointed out that these sources are quoting my video from a few weeks ago to the point that either I was able to predict the future with 100% accuracy or someone was scaping my videos and turning them into news. If you watch this video, you will see how we followed up on this and what we discovered.

Hasbro is failing, sooner or later they’ll end up selling it.
There are so many people saying "it might still become true later on" but that doesn't make it true *now* The article was incorrect and copied from a speculation piece.
If you did cause this it only goes to show how bad the consumers want the IP torn away from those trash. WotC isn’t D&D. Hasbin isn’t D&D. We are.
It could be a "leak" to spark stock inflation prices for a desperate company.

It’s you, y’all gotta stop fear mongering for views :/
In your last video, you did say that it could be fake and using your video to make the article. So there's that. Like, we were always skeptical. That said, Steven did push that it DEFINITELY was POSSIBLE, which isnt unreasonable.
So how they finding that $400million dividend deficit - they got 59 days to do so
Ah Thanks for the correction Stephen.
He got 'Scraped' cause TenCent was mentioned a lot, and in good terms.
We weren't all tricked. You were tricked!
Chinese News AI News Generator... And this is how Skynet began...
Panda picked up on some internet trash and called it news. Typical internet trash.
Did you see what this "news" did for Hasbro's and WotC's stock though? both up half a point today after a week of crashing
Journalism doesn't exist anymore. This is a prime example.
it's content turtles all the way down...
Be civil & respectful as one of the conditions of commenting, but throughout the video there were snide, borderline racist comments about China. So hypocritical.
Congrats for sensationalist journalism without any research.
Has anyone just thought to ask Hasbro directly. If it is false, they will deny it quickly. If there is any truth to it, they will say 'no comment'. Seems a quick way to put this to bed.
This is unfortunate news. I was beginning to get excited about DnD again. Oh well.
I think it comes from a desire for Hasbro to sell DnD. The OGL nonsense and the various and assorted other shenanigans that have caused irritation is a direct result of Hasbro not understanding the community. So many of us would love it if Hasbro went away and someone more knowledgeable of the IP stepped in.
There's finally a positive story about WotC and D&D and it turns out to be not real. That kinda tells a story about WotC all on its own, doesn't it? ;)
@theindiefox347
5 ай бұрын
Why is WotC NOT selling one of their most popular IPs to Tecent a bad thing?
@ToddPutnam
5 ай бұрын
@@theindiefox347 Because I believe if it were put in the hands of Larian (30% owned by Tencent), a studio that LOVES the D&D franchise, they would craft it into a better D&D game and create a more positive relationship with the community. WotC has had so many easily avoidable mis-steps over the past few years, it doesn't feel like they have a good grasp on what the D&D community wants or how to engage with them.
I think it scraped your video because it was relevant and novel. You used a term of interest to the Chinese market (TenCent), referred to an extremely hot video game, and talked about (possible) big financial events. You were also probably the first person to talk about TenCent buying permanent rights to D&D. So yeah, I think if you combine that relevance and novelty, it makes your video of interest to the scraper.
Seems crazy considering its their best seller.
@WolforNuva

Pretty sure that's still Magic the Gathering. Still they've put a lot of work and money to turn D&D into something to milk money out of, so yeah it would be a weird time to sell unless they were just that desperate.

Speculation irresponsibly here. considering some of their toy release decisions.... I start to wonder if Hasbro is a loss leader for whoever owns hasbro. just flicking boogers here, but it makes one wonder. Why would they make a statement? Because a Chinese clickbait site and a naive and/ir clickbait KZread channel said it? Multibillion dollar corporations aren’t worried about what this guy is saying.
hear take over the Video games/Digital/VTT/D&D Beyond. We make money, we do not know s&&& about video games. No one wants us to do digital stuff anyway, they all hate D&D beyond and our VTT. you take the torch; you take the negative press, and we will go back to focusing on Peppa Pig
So; don't trust everything you see on the internet and don't play a piano in public.
You were delusional if you honestly thought anything was being sold.
Anything for clicks. This channel and one other jumped the bandwagon and attempted to mine for views. Hasbro can pound sand I'll not be supporting the company.
what's it feel like to change the world? it's too bad though. i dont care who owns d&d, all i know is that hasbro can roll it up and ram it, sideways. and, wotc, who has been on the razor's edge for many years needs to really look at what they are doing or mtg will be the next victim.
Stephen out here wagging the dog through A.I. and news companies with trash level journalism.
Sounds like somebody should look into who is providing or should I say profiting off of a publicly trading company putting out false information.
@dmbobyo

Maybe we could start with the guy who spread the misinformation on KZread.
He sounds like an expert most of the time. Except when talks about GW. Then we can tell he is a hack on that particular subject. Other subjects he is OK.
With 5e being CC, why buy DnD? They have their own lore and game that they can use the 5e engine. Why spend so much on an IP that would take so much effort to maintain?
Stop trying to sell the idea, it's a bad idea.
So this just means Stephen is a technomancer not a seer. He's using these bots to force manifest this idea😆 But seriously this is so fascinating to watch unfold and it would be hilarious if it got enough attention to actually be considered haha
Hasbro is a sinking ship.. The boycott continues, What a shit show of a company 😂 I just can't see them doing this forever before the last shoe falls
I couldn't care less. I have all of 3.5 and 4th and 5th in pdf file (through clever methods) and I have not printed anything out). I had bought most of 4th early in 4th, and then the hobby unceremoniously dumped it leaving me thinking WTH? So, let Hasbro print, or not print, or sell, or not sell. I couldn't care less. The only roleplaying items I actually pay for are not Hasbro products. Spent plenty with DrivthruRPG. But Hasbro has been cut off from my wallet.
I had a feeling that it was the more likely outcome that your content was scraped by an AI, just because of how word for word it was. What this means is that you, sir, have lost a cult member 😉
I don't think Hasbro is gonna sell until/unless their 5.5e books and dnd beyond completely fail (which may very well happen) I think the people over there calling shots believe in the product/service they are selling whole heartedly, even to their own detriment. Also Larian doesn't NEED the d&d name. Divinity games where selling pretty well on their own. Sure they'd make significantly more with a Baldurs Gate 4 than they would Divinity Original Sin 3, but all they have to do is slap "from the makers of Baldurs Gate 3" in their next games promotions and people will buy it. Hasbro needs Bauldurs Gate 4 more than Larian.
On the flipside, if Hasbro gets too greedy, could Larian make a non-D&D videogame and still make millions, leaving Hasbro and D&D out in the cold?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
hasbro is not selling and no one is looking to buy just let it rest already
I think this was probably an AI article that turns video content into text stories. At least the text story didn’t have 23 fingers :)
We were ticked... by you guys and the rest of the KZread RPG community. Happy clickbait!
They can always change their mind. nothing nefarious about that
