Is Greece Expensive? See The Food Prices At AB Supermarket In Kalamata

Is Greece Expensive? Have a look at Kalamata supermarket prices at Alfa-Beta Vassilopoulos (AB Supermarket). I take a tour of the supermarket and compare food costs in Greece to other countries. Do you think Greece is expensive, cheap, or average?

    That’s very funny (quote) “4 litres of Olive Oil will probably last a year” 🤓 You obviously ain’t Greek nor do much Eastern Mediterranean cooking at home. I use 3 litres of Olive Oil every month 👍 It’s a daily staple, along with fresh lemons, and oregano. Just keeping it real 😎🌴🇮🇱👍✡️⛱☀️

    3 liters a month? Are you putting it in you car's engine? 😂 I am single and I mostly use it for salads or a little to cook pasta or tomato sauce so I don't use it as much as some other people. I don't use it to fry eggs because it is not a good high heat oil. Olive oil is great, but it is still a fat so I try not to use it too much.

    To Go Is To Know My Greek wife and I have been 100% plant based for more than 45 years now. So, we cook/eat mostly eastern Mediterranean, Israeli, and south Indian vegan cuisine. I wouldn’t put animal products into my body IF you offered me $1M to do so. Yes, we use good quality Olive Oil a lot every day, and for all our regular cooking. I probably use about 40 fresh organic lemons each month too...no doubt you think that’s a lot as well 🤓 Personally, I think the best Greek food is on Crete...coz, it’s naturally about 85% plant based to begin with...so, only a slight adjustment has to be made in order to make it completely vegan and super healthy. Just today we made a huge vegan spanakopita, stuffed peppers & tomatoes (Rhodes style) Greek Fasoulada soup, and lemon roasted potatoes. Used lots of olive oil with the phyllo pastry layers...and at least 6 lemons 😎 Tomorrow, for breakfast I’ll have hummus, Israeli salad, mixed beans, and avocado....again with lots of olive oil, lemon, fresh oregano, etc. We get through 3 litres per month no problem. Take care... 😎🌴🇮🇱👍✡️⛱☀️

    It sounds like you eat very healthy. I cut meat out during the week when I am home and I lost 60 pounds, so I know veggies are the way to go. I still splurge with meat on the weekends or when I'm on vacation. You have much better will power than me.

  • @kevztunes

    @kevztunes

    To Go Is To Know Well, it doesn’t really have anything to do with will-power. At 21 years old ...back in 1976...I simply realized that I have absolutely no right to support the killing of sentient, living, feeling beings and that their lives are far more important than my primitive, narcissistic desire to eat them. Once one comes to that realization and awareness...the rest is pretty darn easy. Especially in this modern era where there is so much incredible plant based cuisine from around the world to cook, etc. ...and besides...meat tastes like crap in comparison anyways, so...it’s really a no brainer. Plus, I still run 10K (6.21 miles) 5 times per week at a very decent pace...so I want to stay fit & healthy. Put the animals and planet before oneself...and voila, there is absolutely nothing to it. It’s a win-win scenario for everyone...including Mother Earth. That’s it. 😎🌴🇮🇱👍✡️⛱☀️

    I just always go to AB, when LIDL has something on a discount and I go there at 10am it's not anywhere. People wait in queues at 7am to go get them, also the queue on my local one for checkout is always full. I don't have time for this. AB has everything for a few cents more. Lidl is only worth it when it has a promotion on bananas or chicken otherwise I won't step in there. In fact, before they put the chicken discount at 1.67/kg last summer I hadn't stepped in there in 2 years. The 365 AB's brand is the almost same price as LIDL on what it has. I find everything more expensive by 0,2-0,5e at normal prices. (non-discounts). I heard sklavenitis has the lowest prices on everything than any supermarket here. Haven't checked yet but I assume the hordes of people going for the discounts at LIDL might be migrating there. Although when it happened to get in there (since you find it more rarely) it was like AB in terms of people inside shopping.

    It is funny that Greek products I found in other European countries had lower prices than in a greek super market. This mall used to be a small two-level mall you could climb with a glass elevator with a supermarket, gym, bank, children's play ground, many retail stores and even a dentist's office. It sadly fell into disuse during the financial recession, with only the supermarket paying rent, it is now demolished. It is very sad to see that happening, Greece having had an almost equal life quality with western Europe in the past and today it has almost fallen to the level of Balkan countries.
