The fact that he is willing to learn from his contemporaries & past players even at this stage of his career reflects his keen interest in understanding & unravelling football not just as a player but as a student of the game too. He's an incredible player to have in the squad. & He's right matip is underrated. Apart from his injuries there's not much fault in his game or defending style. He's pretty much a perfect defender plagued only by unfortunate injuries.

greatest pure centre half in football history. maldini and beckenbauer more rounded in being able to play other positions and go forward, but VVD at 100% is a different animal to the defenders that came before him. will be so influential to the next generation.
