Is El Salvador Still Dangerous? I Went To Find Out (

El Salvador. Being from Long Island in New York, you couldn't go through your life without meeting at least a few Salvadorans. But sadly, I never used to hear anything good about the country. I heard about the gang wars, about MS-13, about Barrio 18, about huge waves of migrants fleeing the country. It had the highest murder rate in the world for many of the last 30 years. El Salvador didn't seem like the kinda place you'd wanna visit.
But then I heard that things had changed. There's a new president with some very...unique ideas on public safety. Was it true? Was El Salvador really a different place now?
I had to go there to find out. And I would soon discover that I was quite popular in El Salvador, but not quite with who I imagined.

@@tylerk3616 absolutely! But some people from within ES and outside think that the president is a dictator because he makes use of the police/military to patrol the most notoriously high crime areas. This has brought violent crime down to literally zero in those sections. It will take more time but ES can be a first world country with Bukele as president.

I'm half Salvadoran and got to visit El Salvador with the whole family in 2016. It was dangerous not going to lie but we visited every summer regardless. When Bukele became president in 2019, we saw the instant differece in the following years. Last time we visited was in March of last year and we'll be visiting again in December for the holidays. Can't wait to see how much my country has changed. 🇸🇻

I grew up there from age 0 to 16 and it was a great experience. Everyone there just knew what neighborhoods not to go into. And realistically, tourists have almost NO reason to go into any neighborhood anyway unless they are with someone who's taking them there. Now in 2023, even those boroughs with reputation to be dangerous in the past are now okay for anyone. It's like night and day different. It's insane how much a president has changed a small country when he doesn't tolerate corruption and is transparent with his promises. He literally has made promises on a speech today and a week or two later he is showing evidence that the promise is rolling or completed. I've never seen that kind of response honestly. It's usually a promise today and months later there's an update OR just gets forgotten over time and we never see a result.

Certainly things seem to have changed as it was in the past, but how long will that last, gives me anxiety, I love my country, there is good people here and I am glad your visit to certain places was great. But those specific places you visited are indeed by far not even close to the reality in most dangerous locations in El Salvador. Think of it this way in 3 years the country has a new face a new beginning. Civil war lasted over 20 years now add 20 plus years of bad governments and look where we are standing now. The youth of the country has change there for the country is starting to change. Only a new generation can change the country. A generation that only cares about the most important things for the country. At the end of the day the political parties has a president the rest of the party will agree or disagree with new laws and policies. No one is perfect and corruption will always exist. One of the best things people can do is too keep this president at the end of the day the country has gone though enough pain. You are a young man and you can become part of the solution.

I was there last April. On that plaza on the opposite side from the national palace there's a 2nd floor restaurant/bar that's a great hangout with a view over the plaza and the historical sights. And nice people there also. Hope you have time to do some hiking, especially to the top of one of the volcanoes. I also went diving in a volcano crater lake that's just east of town. The small colonial town tour is also a good intro to the rest of the country.
