IS CASH STILL KING IN SOUTH AFRICA?
How much hard cash is circulating in South Africa and is it a good or bad thing?
So the thing is that.
The amount of hard cash circulating in South Africa rose to R182 billion last year with orders of R84 billion being processed on averages during the December periods
This is according to BankservAfrica’s Integrated Cash Management Service (ICMS) data, they looked at the combined total of physical cash orders by commercial banks for their respective ATM and branch networks.
The demand for cash in a fast-moving economy like SA ,that has a growing population, usually requires a concerted and coordinated response from the cash regulation industry to ensure that there is an adequate supply of cash when people need it available.
Even though the trend of fast adoption of digital and contactless payments, notably during and after the lockdowns, lives on. In South Africa, cash still has its place though.
The growth in overall cash usage continues to rise, well depending on which LSM you fall into, and also what customer preference persists.
This is particularly evident over higher spend periods like the holidays and the festive season, where south africans spend roughly R200BN+
To show how important cash this is in South Africa, Pepkor, the country’s largest clothing retailer reported in 2023 that 90% of its sales are still made in cash.
But that is relative to the LSM that they service.
For instance In a trading update, Pepkor said that the company’s cash sales increased by 5.6% in the year through September 2023.
Even though I understand the need for regulating hard cash, I am also weary of the downsides that it brings considering where we are as an economically growing country.
But I don’t know, maybe we can discuss it in the comments. Let me know how you see things?

CAHS IS KING end of story
It is somewhat of a disadvantage for marginalized communities to have a cashless society, especially in rural areas. The local tuckshops usually charge R10 per transaction. Now imagine paying for the bank charges and the ones imposed by the tuckshop owner. However, cashless purchases benefit people who like convenience in urban areas. We could also note that when you deposit cash in your banking account, you are still charged, not forgetting the monthly charges. Also, some people feel that their money is safe in their banking accounts, and some do not feel the same way. It's actually a contradicting topic.

This is true.. But change is inevitable and all will be numbers on a screen . The transition is gradual rather then quickly especially in a developing nation. I know Fintech businesses currently working on solving issues around transactional fees and financial inclusion of small merchants and underbanked communities.. Exciting
Cash is still important. I learnt my lesson when i had to fill a car but Speedpoints were not working due to loadshedding & network affected. Cashless South Africa is ideal world but people in rural areas prefers cash over using card to do purchases.
Somlians Spaza Shops charge 10% more for using cards.

Cash will forever be king my bro
Whether we like it or not ,we are heading to a cashless society and most assets will be digitised and centralised.
Cash also avoids tech issues that result in refused cards where you still have enough in the account. Embarrassing!
All I am saying is where I am from it is more expensive to pay without cash. R5 surcharge for every R50 transaction. But I still prefer the convenience of being cashless.
Cash will always be king.
Although it's risky to have a lot of cash on you, I still prefer it. I hate when banks, government or private sector is monitoring my every move😅
Love this guy😊
Zimasa my bro🔥🔥🔥
It's all about control- on the end they can block you on some purchases, say you get a child grant then you can only buy children goodies viz. Clothing they can block you if you purchase cooldrink or chocolate (all control)

Bingo!
We can't be completely cashless as a country. We can talk about how having both options available in a lot more places. I personally use digital ever since the option was available. For the convenience of not standing in queues or having to carry my wallet every time I think I might need to buy something. There is always paper trail with digital (you can track yourself) and it's much much safer. It also brought about an interesting side-effect, I spend way less money now that I avoid cash. It's almost like when I have cash my brain thinks, "there is money" vs when it's digital the brain thinks, "how much money". There is a difference there how one might behave between those 2 situations. I admit there are situations where I have to have cash but I don't prefer it.
Thank you for the video!
Loved every point mentioned here, and all are valid. This goes to show that our government is not so consideration of it people. Like it was mentioned here, that we as a country still need to figure out this digital stuff and also make sure no one is left behind because this gap thing is really getting old now. But they don't seem to care as they want to things as if this gap doesn't exist. And then they option to do, what best suit the minority and then later they will complain about increased rate of crime. But honestly, I believe no one get into it by just wanting to do it. It is due to lacking that put most in that position to commit crime. Unfortunately our leaders would rather pay more money for security than to get to the root cause of the majority of it citizen and actually find ways to help it people.
Going cashless would screw a lot of low income people and small business. I mean for the first two years of having a bank account it sat at R0 but I constantly used cash because I bought my groceries from the local vendors. Cashless would just be another one of the things that widen the class divide in SA
I was so pro cashless when I moved from ekasi to the city having a car until one day I had to go back to ekasi with no car and had to use public transport and that made me realise how cash was still king
I'm scared of banking app kidnapping😅. Seriously!

@@sivenathimbebe They kidnap you make you increase limits, take you an atm at gun point at garage for example, then tell you to withdraw all the money, they dont transfer it to their accounts
I think a cashless and cash based society can both have some benefits, however I do think going cashless excludes quite a majority of the population, thus it might not be the most optimal option yet. I also like how you said "We are still growing" meaning that some systems working in developed nations, doesn't translate to them working for us as well.
Thanks for this video. Its a topic I am really interested in. I've worked on both sides of the discussion, cash management and also digital payments. I'm glad to have your perspective on this issue. 5:04 are you able to please share your references for the data you shared around cost of cash vs. cost of digital payments. It'll be interesting to see the underlying numbers.
Cash is important especially for merchants. Banks just want to take advantage on customers and merchants of the fact we must all move to digital cash so they'll charge fees for every transaction made. I mean why would you even charge someone when their card declined.
Here is something interesting, we need voices like this
At my local spaza shop they charge R3 on every item you buy with card. For example: applemunch R2 with cash R5 with card

The answer is on the balancing act my brother. We must employ a hybridization of both cash and digital. Even with our economic policy we must employ a hybrid of both Capitalism plus socialism. No need to be extreme we must strive to hit the balancing act.

As a country I believe we still far from being a cashless society because of different variables. Hence even now I still prefer cash to control my money. Therefore, I fully concur with the rest of the comments cash unfortunately is still the king for now until a lot of problems are addressed.
I remember being broke broke on my account and had cash, craved some Starbucks and was so sad to know that I couldn’t use cash 😅I don’t have Starbucks often so it’s that crave it randomly and get it so I was so disappointed, give ppl an option
Since our nation is still developing, I think it's crucial to educate people about cybersecurity before shifting to cashless transactions to help them avoid unauthorized hackers. Additionally, the current practice of handling cash is becoming increasingly problematic. That's my view.😉
I forgot my bank card, but had cash on me ..went to Starbucks in Rosebank, only to learn that it's cashless.. I went to vida cafe ... We not ready for cashless..don't know why businesses are forcing this agenda
Cash is good for now, sometimes you have accidents with the digital payments. I personally went and bought building materials ekasi paid using my card and the got 'accidentally' double charged only to find out when I went to the back to ask... But that is an isolated accident but for cash is still practical
Accounts with minimum monthly fee, charge more on transaction fees. so its better to withdraw cash and transact in CASH
I buy coffee everyday from woolworths mount Edgecombe, one time I did not bring my card but had cash. The inconvenience of having to que with everyone when all you needed was just coffee. We are moving too fast as a growing country.
Cash is still King, more so in the informal economy, which raises another question how much tax income does the government collect from the informal economy? I think saw somewhere that it's worth billions.

some of the spazza shops charge you onto of the banking fees and other places like tarvens also do so , and you keep getting penalised , so cash is more safer than cashless

as much as I think cash is king, it opens doors for crime to take place because cash is anonymous and I doubt people would wanna deal/buy drugs using their bank accounts. if they do and try hide it as something else then at least they will have to pay tax on it at some point...
Next step is to indroduce CBDCs, Central Bank Digital Curriences. Some of the features include making currency expire, i,e if you do not use your rands in 6 months they can freeze them. They have already done this in China,

What SA banks should do is invest in cash apps/ venmo type services like other African countries did. SA acting like we aren't like the rest of the continent People avoid banks because of costs. Our curent system is tring to ignore the fact that a majority of South Africans' income is informal. It helped for countries like Zimbabwe, it can work for us Low fees = More people moving to digital finance.

The funny thing is that those who wish for a cashless society are the same people who follow neo capitalism but they hate the philosophy of communist cashless China my brother we have a lot of people in SA are very out of touch with reality with the normal society but is it possible yes just look at how Somalia, Kenya, Uganda have done in order to make tracking and saving on physical cash printing but the truth is those who seek cashless society have not looked at the majority of citizens because cash still is king and helps a lot of families but yeah about karen😂
