Honestly odds are they didn't and unless you have a very short memory this is joke compared to what the ANC have done. Thabo Mbeki denied the existence of aids frustrating access to life saving drugs and drugs that prevented its spread to children. Jacob Zuma and Mbeki allowed critical infrastructure including water and electricity to degrade. Putting at risk the most poor and extremely disadvantaged. Including those whom thanks to Mbeki have aids or hiv. Meanwhile Gouws said bad words

Excellent and sensible video. I would like to share my experience when I lived in SA. 2012 I participated in a course in Durban. It was me (a swede), a young white woman and a few other black women. In a lunch break I asked the others about their experiences during apartheid. The result was an interesting discussion but the white woman was dead silent. In the afternoon she came up to me and she was so grateful for me starting this discussion. It was the first time in her life that she was part of such a discussion. She was just a small girl at 1994 and now her parents refused to talk about apartheid era and her friends were just not interested in talking about the subject. It clearly shows that the rainbow nation has only put a thin layer on the obvios racism that still exists
The "it happened a long time ago" is also used to try and excuse apartheid.

As a white person born in a "post-apartheid" South Africa, I've always been incredibly uncomfortable with the level of denial that exists within my community. I regularly encounter people who have clearly benefited from apartheid (directly or otherwise) playing the "reverse racism" card, or the "it's been 30 years, just move on" card, all in an attempt to avoid facing the reality of our privilege. Being made to feel uncomfortable about the legacy of our behavior does not equate to discrimination. Being asked to be mindful of the lived experiences of South Africans of colour and to accommodate their anger, frustration, and suspicion is not oppression. Policies like BEE, designed to redress the wrongs of the past, are not "reverse racism". Rather, these are the consequences of our actions, or those of our parents and grandparents from which we continue to benefit. The people who have been so quick to defend Renaldo Gouws are the same people who support the white farm murder conspiracy theory. They would sooner invent a genocide than admit that white South Africans may have a racism problem. The DA's hand wringing about this does not erase the fact that there is an undercurrent of racism in everything they say and do. Their neoliberal rhetoric and refusal to engage with the issue of race have empowered people like Renaldo Gouws, and they are now infiltrating our democratic institutions. Yes, they may have a better service delivery record than the ANC, and, yes, they may not have their history of corruption, but we shouldn't have to choose between a functional government and social justice. We deserve better than that.

I’m coloured man who is white passing I come from cape flats and I hate racism because I experienced it on a daily because I was in a black and coloured community and I really like this channel because it challenges my beliefs and to say I’m not racist is a lie because some of my beliefs are from what stems of as a child is that I was not brown enough to enjoy black and coloured communities but I wasn’t white enough to enjoy that community so I believe we should have racial equality and racial justice but I believe we should be teaching it in schools not trying to hold someone accountable for what they believe or see because the one thing you can’t do is try to change a racist because they have been taught that they are superior and no matter how we try to rehabilitate these people it won’t work because from youth till now there beliefs won’t change but if we introduce Legislation that introduce racial equality and racial justice into a youth environment for which schools would be best to do I think rooting out racism through generations would be ideal because I believe that all those people who treated me differently because of my colour of skin I would not want them to change but there children I believe that is who we should be focusing on and how we win the battle of racism and rooting it out of society no matter if you black or white and in my case coloured. Im a very proud DA supporter let’s not say the DA is racist because they aren’t the main reason the DA was created was to fight against apartheid but rather say the DA has a lot of accused racist in the party and I believe Renaldo Gouws should be put in jail for things he said.

As a white non-citizen who has worked in several African countries, and gave back my Green Card at the US Embassy in Eritrea(!), who cannot vote in SA elections, this election has made me take notice, and I've been listening to various channels from all sectors of the population, incl smwx, and I am very glad you have spoken about both Renaldo Gouws- how can the DA even hesitate to have nothing further to do with him? - and racism in SA. We whites need to hear this, we need educating, and your channel is very valuable for that. One of the first conversations, on another channel, was with Dr Ntando Sindane of UWC, and he kept ranting about "whiteness", but I couldn't work out from his conversation what exactly he was complaining about. So i would be very grateful if you would do a no-holds-barred video on what the story is here. The only way SA can progress is if both sides of society make the sincerest efforts to understand each other, recognise the others' strengths and their own weaknesses, and use them in optimum ways to work together. Maybe this is a statement of whiteness?? Many thanks for your channel, and for reading this. Z

As a fellow "white non-citizen", my understanding of whiteness in a South African context is primarily pretending like there's a level playing field when clearly there isn't. Also getting away with not speaking any local languages and assuming we have better education without actually educating ourselves about African culture and knowledge systems, and thinking questionable forms of cultural appropriation are flattering. And finally to rush to being offended when criticised or called out for problematic behaviours or statements instead of reflecting on them.

Fully agree. Having grown up in Europe, the evil history of Fascism was taught in school relentlessly. In South Africa, I've often been surprised how little people seem to know about the history of Apartheid and how a lot of white South Africans don't take it seriously and still believe a lot of the myths taught by Apartheid ("empty land", "tribal wars" etc...). They also seem to be under the misconception that Dutch is an African languge.

I totally agree we as a country have never dealt with the past, we have avoided conversations that we need to have. This might sound a bit weak, but as a white South African who was very young when Apartheid ended, I could intellectually understand its impact and ramifications, but I didn't have a tangible emotional connection to it. I didn't participate in it, and although I can see its legacy all around, I still somewhat live in a bubble. When COVID happened, I lost everything. I was incredibly angry at the government for taking away my rights, my ability to feed my family, and more. I had an emotional response, and with so much time on my hands, I started to reflect. I realized that how I felt over such small restrictions, in contrast to the entirety of Apartheid, was intense. That was a lightbulb moment for me. I gained an emotional understanding of how most people must have felt-and still feel, 30 years later, when so little has actually changed. For those still living in the same conditions as before 1994, they intellectually understand the rights they have on paper but have yet to truly experience them.

Renaldo is a youtuber hunting for attention. No way is this guy MP quality. Good move from the DA to sack him. SA dosnt need a white Julias talking for attention. We need action from our leader!!!
I am the same age as Gouws. There is no way in my mind to think what he said is close to okay. The governance of the ANC has been really bad but the fact that Steenhuizen defends this guy says a lot why the DA will never be in power. Still a lot of change is need.
This, for me, is a bit of a quandary. What he said and how he said it is not defensible, which can't continue if we are to survive. But I think there is an issue of people not listening to each other when it comes to this matter. The man obviously has problems, but these are views that a large part of the population has. We can't condemn him and his views (which many people have), chuck him out, and then still think we are going to build a united nation. They have grievances on their side that have, such as the problematic song. We have to condemn everything with the same energy. Because if he goes to court and wins the case, we just accept that it's fine (like you justified for the song)? I would say eff no. I reckon they feel the same way about the song. Just because the court says it's OK, doesn't mean it's OK. People have to listen to each other better, especially the people we disagree with the most. Otherwise we will never make it as a nation. The same discomfort will continue because we are just acknowledging one side.
I am not here to defend Mr. Gouws. But I am curious if you watched the video past 30 seconds? At 42 seconds onwards he says and I quote "I didn't mean anything I said there, but I wanted to evoke a response out of you". And then he proceeds to showcase that Malema etc sang racist songs at UNIVERSITIES about killing white people under the guise of "struggle songs". I don't know about Mr. Gouws racist views etc, but just this 1 video particularly which is being used as "proof" of racism doesn't make sense. He is using shocking language to FULLY showcase the absurd double standard that plagues South Africa. If Mr. Gouws gets removed from politics, as one could argue he should be, then Zuma and EFF should be removed effective immediately. We can't have parties where the leaders (who have been and would be president) who sings about killing a minority group in the country.
